Doctor goes up against Doctor in the 2011 Constellation Awards, with both Matt Smith and David Tennant nominated for their role as The Doctor in the Best Male Performance - Television category.

The Awards, now in their fifth year, are Canada's premier awards rewarding excellence in science fiction film and television. Because they cover programmes broadcast in 2010, both the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor's are eligible. Tennant for his performance in The End of Time - Part Two, and Smith for his performance in last year's Christmas special, A Christmas Carol. David Tennant was given last year's award for his performance in The Waters of Mars. Also nominated is Tony Curran for his portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh in Vincent and the Doctor.

Karen Gillan is nominated for Best Female Performance - Television for her role in Amy's Choice and faces Katherine Jenkins nominated for A Christmas Carol.

Doctor Who is also nominated in the Best Science Fiction Television Series category, a category it has one three times before although it lost out in last year's awards to Supernatural, which has also been nominated for 2010.

Murray Gold earns a nominaton for Doctor Who's music in the Best Technical Accomplishment category, with Steven Moffat and Richard Curtis both being nominated for Best Overall 2010 Science Fiction Film or Television Script, Moffat for The Eleventh Hour and Curtis for Vincent and the Doctor.

For a full list of nomanees see the awards website.

The awards will be announced at a Ceremony on July 16, 2011 at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North hotel.

A Good Man Goes To War - Update

Posted: 25 May 2011 12:27 PM PDT

Doctor WhoDoctor Who will face the double peril of live football and Britain's Got Talent, for the final episode before the mid season break, according to schedules published today.

A Good Man Goes to War, which showrunner Steven Moffat promises will contain a 'game-changing cliffhanger', has been given a 50 minute slot between 6.40 and 7.30pm on Saturday 4th June. It will follow So You Think You Can Dance Live on BBC One and is followed by The National Lottery: Who Dares Wins.

As Doctor Who goes on air, ITV1 will be showing England playing Switzerland with live Football Coverage of the Euro 2012 Group G qualifier at Wembley Stadium, although the match should be over before Doctor Who starts. At 7pm they go into the Britain's Got Talent - Final, the show that has been winning the ratings on Saturday nights, but which has not yet been placed directly against The Doctor. BBC Two will show Dad's Army while The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the film on Channel 4.

The BBC has issued more information about the episode. Steven Moffat has confirmed that everything on the BBC Website is approved and not a spoiler, but those wishing to avoid all information about the forthcoming episode should avoid the news below.

The BBC have confirmed that episode 7 will feature the Cybermen.

In the video below, Director Peter Hoar talks about shooting one of the Doctor's most famous enemies.

Will YOU Draw the Ghost Train?

Posted: 25 May 2011 07:09 AM PDT

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the post most of you have been waiting for, where we announce the latest Kasterborous competition. You might call it "K's Got Talent", but of course the idea is that as things stand, we don't have enough of it.

That's where you come in. We're looking for a never-before-published artist to take the reins on a new comic strip that we have developed which will feature here on Kasterborous on completion. It won't be easy, it will involve hard work, but we hope that you will find it a great experience.

So why should you enter?

First of all, there's the glory factor – your work will appear on Kasterborous for posterity, your take on the Eleventh Doctor and his companion there for the world to see as it tells an original new tale.

Secondly, Kasterborous seems to have a good record with artists. Our designer Anthony Dry has contributed various illustrations to the Doctor Who boxset DVDs over the past few years, while the winner of our first competition to illustrate Time Leech, Justin Abbot, has gone onto a career in TV and video production as a storyboarder. Meanwhile Rick Lundeen, who stepped into the breach for the final installment of Time Leech, is a writer and illustrator in his own right.

Back in 2009, we launched the Time Leech competition following a suggestion from former DWM editor John Freeman, and the resulting strip ended up bproving hugely successful, and we had a remarkable selection of images and illustrations sent in. It took some time to whittle these down to the finalists, and we're hoping for a similarly passionate response this time around.

If successful, you will be illustrating Ghost Train, an original tale by the Kasterborous team which features the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond. Set before the Industrial Revolution, Ghost Train sees the world turned on its head as a powerful alchemist sets himself up as a time-spanning emperor!

More on that later, however. In the meantime, we want your entries!

The competition is going to work in three phases:

  • Initial submission - if we like it, we will ask you to illustrate a…
  • Single page from the script – and if this is what we're looking for, you will be invited to illustrate the…
  • Final strip!

Meanwhile, the judging team consists of myself (Christian Cawley), Brian A. Terranova, Anthony Dry, Gareth Kavanagh and one other, yet-to-be-announced-but-pretty-impressive name.

If you're interested in how things went last time, take a look at the Time Leech page, although note that you should download a copy to read later as the strip will shortly be removed (for reasons that will become apparent in the next few weeks).

One word of note: due to copyright reasons, there is no financial reward involved for this project. The prize is the chance to illustrate a comic strip, add it to your portfolio, and have your work showcased here on Kasterborous!

Send your entries to comics@kasterborous.com – we look forward to hearing from you!

Who Scares Because it Cares

Posted: 25 May 2011 04:01 AM PDT

While we can't get anything official in writing Doctor Who writer Mark Gatiss has confirmed that its the programmes solemn duty to provide the nations of the world with: "a healthy scare".

Speaking to Digital Spy at the Philips British Academy Television Awards nominees' shindig the writer behind The Unquiet Dead and Victory of the Daleks was again restating his claim to be the calming voice of reason for Doctor Who in and amongst the various complaints and quibbles of the press regarding the recent outcry over The Silence disquieting bathroom disintegration of poor old Joy:

"It's thrilling, wonderful… of course it should be too scary."

Gatiss also spoke of the controversy around his excellent first episode The Unquiet Dead which saw the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) fighting off the re-animated dead thanks to Geth releated gas leak:

"When I wrote my very first one for Chris Eccleston, I actually went on [BBC Radio 4's] PM with Eddie Mair because they'd had people saying, 'It's too frightening'. He said, 'How do you feel?' and I said, 'I'm absolutely over the moon'. Of course that's what it's about."

With Gatiss reaffirming Who's position on all things BOO! and Matthew Graham promising something unsettling on Saturday night its good to have proper fear back on the schedules rather than the orchestrated horror of a panel of human beings telling one individual 35 different ways they're rubbish at something.

Doctor Who continues this Saturday with The Almost People on BBC1 at 6:45 pm!

Surprises in Store in A Good Man Goes to War!

Posted: 25 May 2011 02:30 AM PDT

So we've covered the basics for The Almost People – so what about A Good Man Goes to War? As regular readers probably know, we tend to feature episode previews in something resembling order, so we won't be throwing any full previews at you just yet until we've found out what happens to the Doctor, Amy, Rory and The Almost People.

However, it seems that following the news that the Cybermen are returning in episode 7, more leaks and speculation are floating all over the place. Just so you get the full picture, the BBC are releasing preview discs only to newspapers and the most trusted websites this week and next pretty much means most Doctor Who sites are out (yes, even us). The fact that they are taking such steps is pretty cool, however, as it means the spoilers should remain shrouded in secrecy until broadcast (the Daily Mail notwithstanding)

We don't want anyone to run into this news accidentally, so let's say a big welcome to our new spoiler tool!

A Good Man Goes to War Spoiler
According to io9.com, A Good Man Goes to War features guest appearances from Hugh Bonneville and Oscar Lloyd as Henry and Toby Avery, who you will recall from episode 3, The Curse of the Black Spot.

The Almost People Preview & Gallery

Posted: 25 May 2011 01:56 AM PDT

Kicking off at 6.45 pm this Saturday night, Doctor Who is set to take an interesting turn with an unforgettable moment – something so important that we haven't been given preview discs for The Almost People or the following episode!

While we'll leave it to you to speculate just what is going on, we've got a nice preview gallery below courtesy of the BBC. In the meantime, let's just recap and remind ourselves just where we're upto in Matthew Graham's fascinating two-part story about cloning…

As the solar storm rages, Jennifer, a Ganger driven mad by the memories of being "decommissioned", is seeking revenge, as the time-travelling drama continues.

She can remember every excruciating second of every "execution" and is determined that the humans will pay. And she isn't just talking war; she's talking revolution. As the crumbling factory fills with toxic fumes and drips lethal acid, the "Originals" wait desperately for the shuttle from the Mainland to rescue them. But Jennifer has other ideas. Can the Doctor convince the terrified factory workers to embrace their own humanity and work together with their Gangers to overcome a monster of their own making?

The regular cast of Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are joined by a quality supporting cast which features Sarah Smart as the various versions of Jennifer…

So to make up for the lack of a spoiler-free preview (as if we'd leak anything) here come the trailers…

First of all, BBC America, advertising the episode for June 4th, to make way for Memorial Day:

And then, there are the clips…

…and this…

Meanwhile, here are those photos, courtesy of the BBC; you may have seen a couple of these last week.

BBC Confirm Cybermen in Episode 7

Posted: 25 May 2011 01:28 AM PDT

The producers of Doctor Who have confirmed that the episode A Good Man Goes to War is set to feature the Cybermen, as Series 6 gears up for its mid-season finale.

The BBC themselves reveal that the "mid-series finale begins in The Almost People on Saturday at 6.45pm", but with all of the rumours flying around we should leave things there, really.

So, we're going to keep largely tight-lipped about the rest of the news as from here on, so why not spend a minute or so listening to episode director Peter Hoar on the attraction of directing Doctor Who's second biggest monster…

What's On TV Interview with Arthur Darvill

Posted: 25 May 2011 12:31 AM PDT

Arthur Darvill took time out to talk to What’s On TV about playing Rory in Doctor Who and to fill them in on his latest adventure set in an acid mine. The second part of this Doctor Who story begins this Saturday with Rory in terrible danger as he looks for ‘ganger’ Jennifer in the monastery...

Rory seems to have a bigger role in this series?

“Absolutely, he’s really part of the gang now. I think getting married and proving himself to everyone. Waiting 2000 years for Amy has helped his confidence. It hasn’t made him ‘Mr Total Confidence’ because I don’t think he’ll ever be that, but he definitely feels like he deserves to be there, and has a role to play and can help out with whatever adventure they have. There are still various tensions there, but he’s not still trying to work out what’s going on between the Doctor and Amy and the whole time travel thing. He’s got it now!”

Do you see him as a fully fledged companion this time then?

“Absolutely and his nursing skills have definitely come into play this time around. The Doctor finds him more useful now. Their relationship is growing and it’s a very complicated relationship, but they are getting quite close. They’re now good friends and can tell each other what they think, rather than Rory kind of shying away from that.”

Rory has quite a big part to play in this latest two-parter?

“This is quite a good adventure for Rory because he’s really at the point where he really wants to prove himself. Here he knows he’s useful and can help out. He really goes for it in these episodes. There’s a big war going on between the ‘gangers’ and people, and it’s really a battle of humanity. He sometimes thinks the Doctor gets swept away to solve a situation and forgets about individual people who are being hurt.”

This episode is a big one for Amy, is that right?

“Right I’m going to be very diplomatic about this. There are really things that up the stakes about how much danger they’re in, affecting each other, and how much danger the Doctor is putting Amy in. But Rory feels a responsibility to keep everyone safe. There’s the ending to end all endings in this episode. I’m not saying exactly what it is, but it’s a biggie! Saying that, there’s a terrific cliffhanger in the next story, in episode seven. You won’t want to miss that either.”

Have you got over having to sport a ponytail, like in the last series?

“I’d like Rory to cut himself a Mohican and travel back to the 1970s to the punk rock era. Everyone, friends and family, loved that ponytail! It was really attractive, wasn’t it?”

Were you ever a sci-fi fan before you joined Doctor Who?

“I was just a kid when Doctor Who was on before and caught the end of Silvester McCoy’s Doctor. I’ve now caught up on Tom Baker’s stories on DVD and they were brilliant - he’s the Doctor I really like. I do dip in and out of sci-fi stuff. I think Star Trek The Wrath of Khan is one of the best films ever made! And I did watch Masters Of The Universe the other day and that’s a classic.”

"I think the balance between the humor and the terror is good because the look of it's just getting better and better, the way it's being shot, the way it's designed, it's just unbelievable."

- Arthur Darvill, enjoying being part of the new season of Doctor Who.

Dis-continuity?

Posted: 24 May 2011 07:48 PM PDT

Continuity. If there's one word within Doctor Who fandom that can spark debates that can last for hours, it's that one word.

We love a bit of it, working out the history of the Daleks or the Cybermen, factoring in the Time War to certain events of the Doctor's life to make more sense of everything (yes, events in The Ark contradict events in The End of the World but it was a ripple effect from the Time War you see?) and even looking back to see where The Silence could have popped their menacing bulbous heads up in the Doctor's previous lives only to be forgotten about a split second later.

For some it is a never ending joy to work out all these dates and events and put them in order and for others, a nightmare.

Which is why a helpful Doctor Who fan called Nathan The Nerd has created a timeline of events for the Doctor and his friends for the first six years of "NuWho".

Twisting and turning like a twisty turney thing, the (admittedly hard to focus on) timeline amps out events that occour within the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctor's lives and also links events from the past and the future to help make more sense of them, River Song's timeline being one of those in question.

A lot of work has clearly gone into this and it's definitely worth having a look at. Just make sure that you've got a few headache tablets to hand as it can be a little much to wrap your head around at first…
