Gillan ‘Disturbed' by Mid-Season Finale

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 06:42 AM PDT

When we last left Amy…Well we don't know when we last left Amy just yet but when we rejoined the non-melty Amy Pond she was about to give birth to the unknown baby – a birth which Karen Gillan knows will haunt Amy for a long time to come.

Speaking to TV & Satellite Week Magazine Gillan reveals that underneath the shocks and THAT TWIST was a situation that Amy found herself in that Gillan thought 'disturbing'.

However, Karen was no sleeping partner in getting the upgrade from 'scary' to 'disturbing'; she consulted her mother for advice on making it as 'horrific' as possible:

"It is really, really emotional for Amy what she goes through. I think any woman watching will really feel for her. It is something that I actually found quite difficult to understand so I had to speak to my mum about the labour scene and just tried to make it really horrific."

Quite just how her mother knows about being kidnapped, cloned, locked in a white box and being haunted by the face of Mrs. Orton from Prick Up Your Ears remains to be seen.

Any one of the those events would be traumatic enough but adding icing to that misery cake is Gillan's own tease that after A Good Man Goes to War Amy might not be the same again:

"Definitely, that is one of the things I set out to do because of something that happens to her to do with giving birth, which would really affect anyone. It is going to change her in a big way for the long run and I think we are going to get to see Amy in a really different light."

Its no wonder that after Gillan has finished her work on the BBC Four one off drama We'll Take Manhattan based on the relationship between 60′s fashion icon Jean Shrimpton and photographer David Bailey, she'll be taking some time off to 'think'.

Torchwood novel titles confirmed

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 06:19 AM PDT

Yesterday we reported on the three Torchwood novels to be released this summer; we can now confirm the titles of the books as First Born by James Goss, Long Time Dead by Sarah Pinborough, and The Men Who Sold The World by Guy Adams.

The novels are set after Children of Earth, and are a direct prequel to Miracle Day; Davies described the stories in Doctor Who Magazine as being able to "exploit the narrative gap in a way which would be impossible for radio".

The series will be published on a fortnightly basis, but the dates have yet to be confirmed, being dependent upon when Miracle Day is broadcast in the United Kingdom.

Doctor Who Awesome Anime!

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 06:09 AM PDT

Long-term readers of Kasterborous may recall the amazing work of the YouTube user who calls himself OtaKing. What this chap has done is pretty amazing – create a 13-minute long anime style adventure for the Third Doctor using awesome animation, audio clips from the classic series and a whole lot of effort.

OtaKing has released various in-progress versions of the project which we've featured several times, but this week the finished results have recently been uploaded to YouTube and, as you can see, his work is nothing short of stunning!

Featuring the voices of Jon Pertwee, Nicholas Courtney, Roger Delgado, Anthony Ainley and various Cyberman and Dalek voice actors from the original series, the episode features earth caught in the crossfire of rival Cyberman and Dalek invasion forces!

OtaKing is in fact Paul Johnson, a 32-year-old professional translator from Sheffield, UK, who describes the video as:

"…just an 11 minute fake 'what if' trailer for a Doctor Who anime if one had been made back in the early '90s."

Coming in at closer to 13 minutes, however, you can see just how fantastic his work is, and what Doctor Who done anime-style would look like.

If this chap hasn't been snapped up by the BBC by the time you read this sentence, there is something wrong with the world. On a plus side, however, when Doctor Who fans can create material as amazing as this, you have to feel sorry for other shows…

Dalek Builder Slates Moff

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 04:44 AM PDT

You may recall that The Grand Moff recently indicated that the Daleks were currently being rested following their rebirth in Victory of the Daleks in 2010.

For many fans, this made perfect sense – after all, at the end of that story, just 5 remained to shoot off into time and space with the apparent aim of rebuilding their civilization. Moffat's decision makes sense, despite that fact that the new Dalek designs were used just twice.

It isn't the first time that the Daleks have been rested. Despite appearing in every series of the show from 2005-2010, they were previously absent from Doctor Who between 1967 and 1972 (The Evil of the Daleks and Day of the Daleks), and again between 1975 and 1979 (Genesis of the Daleks and Destiny of the Daleks). So as you can see, as long as Steven Moffat is being honest with us, this move is not without precedent.

However, this hasn't stopped passionate Dalek builder Ady Davies from claiming that the fascists from Skaro were dropped from the show this year because the new designs are unpopular.

"I don't think it's a case that people are fed up of Dalek storylines. I think that people just have a complete dislike for the new design of Dalek.

"These new ones look like Teletubbies. They look like gone-wrong Lego plastic kits. I don't know anyone who likes them.

"And rather than admit that they've messed up, they're just trying to sweep them under the carpet and give them a rest so people forget what they look like."

That's quite an accusation in this day and age of the Internet, and we suspect that Ady was either pulling the leg of a BBC reporter, or hasn't quite grasped the concept of photographs.

Mr Davies was speaking to the BBC as part of promotion for a Charity Sci-Fi group event at North Swindon Library on Saturday, which is in aid of cancer charities Macmillan and Marie Curie and is memory of the late Elisabeth Sladen.

Well, it's been over a year since the new Paradigm Daleks were revealed, and certainly children seem to love them as much as ever, with more and more new Dalek toys released. So, let's have the first of this weekend's polls…

More Mid-Series Finale Interviews

CultBox has another couple of interviews with two of the guest stars of A Good Man Goes to War.

First up, some highlights from their interview with Danny Sapani, who plays Colonel Manton.

Can you tell us a bit about your character in 'A Good Man Goes To War'?

"Manton is a powerful leader, a scary man and a fearsome soldier. He understands and respects the religious, but is more interested in power. He is obsessed with killing the Doctor."

Did your character get to interact with any of the monsters in the episode?

"My character gets to unveil the Headless Monks. Aaaarrgh!"

Steven Moffat's Doctor Who stories are renowned for being quite complex – does this episode follow that trend and how many times did you have to read the script to understand the story?

"It is a very complex story with many strands involving many characters from the past and present. I felt it really challenged my need for a back-story, to flesh out the character and know how they relate to the story as a whole, but in the end it made for a more spontaneous experience. I trusted the direction. I am sure it will be great."

If the chance presented itself, would you like to come back to Doctor Who?

"I would love to come back to Doctor Who. I think it is one of the best things on television and has such wide ranging appeal."

A Good Man Goes To War - clip scam warning

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 11:51 PM PDT

A number of Internet Security sites have reported that several marketing scams are in progress using the promise of a clip from this Saturday's mid-series finale A Good Man Goes To War as a premise to visit their sites and potentially collate personal information.

The scams running on YouTube purport to point to a video elsewhere that is too large for the site, but then require the visitor to perhaps fill out a survey or sign up to an offer before gaining access to the alleged clip.

GFI Software security researcher Chris Boyd commented:
The same thing happened when the last series finale was due to air. There was also a bit of an issue with various Doctor Who games doing the rounds, too. As always: avoid.

Everything we've seen so far is the usual fake video/survey nonsense, but there could well be malware in the offing between now and Saturday.

Please note: the only official clips from A Good Man Goes To War are available free to watch courtesy of the BBC.

It is suggested but not confirmed, that the same maybe done for "The 10th Planet" & "The Ice Warriors" who have 3 episodes missing between them. Dan Hall has been quoted in the past that it is cheeper to get animation done as a job lot.

Beware Spoiler Scams!

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 10:18 PM PDT

Always cashing in on the offer of hope only to snatch it away and make you look stupid, online scammers are at work right now with Doctor Who fans as their target.

The carrot? The promise of a leaked version of A Good Man Goes to War on YouTube.

The stick? A claim that the episode is too long for the popular video hosting service, a link to where you CAN watch it and then a beating around the head with an online survey – with, of course, no video at the end of it.

But the promise of the video and the sharing of information via the survey has been enough to fool various Doctor Who fans. Yesterday we spotted at least 12 instances of this so called offer on YouTube, but by following it up all you're doing is sharing your personal and private data to people who will at best sell it on, and at worst use it to defraud you or a financial institution.

One such YouTube user committing this scam is "SpenceTamr" – steer clear of this and similar listings!

With just a day left until A Good Man Goes to War, we hope that no one else is caught out (comments are blocked on these YouTube entries to prevent warnings) however, a quick browse of the web reveals that a couple of news sites have picked up on this.

Our advice, and that of Kasterborous editor Christian Cawley (himself an expert in matters of online security) is to switch off your PC, close your browser and just do something else until 6.40 pm  on Saturday night. Most of all, stay safe online, whatever it is you're doing.

The three episodes are separate stories, though all based on the theme of possession, and Davies reported their settings ranging from an old folk's home, a haunted pub, and the depths of the Mariana Trench.

The plays are set before Children of Earth and so enables popular character Ianto Jones to have further adventures with Jack and Gwen - voiced of course by his off-screen persona Gareth David Lloyd. The actor had previously been rumoured to be involved with the plays after his band Blue Gillespie had to pull out of Live and Unsigned in May, citing "Gareth has got to go to America for a couple of weeks and the trip unfortunately falls over the time of the gig."

Davies has also reported that Torchwood would team up with UNIT for their first official joint mission!

No transmission date has been announced at present, though BBC Drama indicated that they would be broadcast later in the summer.

As well as the radio adventures, three new novels will also be published that take place during the same period as the plays, with Davies explaining they would "exploit the narrative gap in a way which would be impossible for radio".

Mid-Season Finale Video Clips

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 07:45 PM PDT

As part of their battle against spoilers, the BBC have released these two clips from the upcoming mid-season finale, A Good Man Goes to War.

We're being facetious, of course; there is no way the corporation could promote Doctor Who without trailers that can be used on various shows, which is who these clips come into being.

However, we would suggets that you don't click play if you want to remain totally spoiler-free. Nothing in these clips gives away anything you wouldn't have already foreseen, but the warning is there…

Clip one sees River Song (Alex Kingston) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) at the Stormcage:

She looks like she's going to sneeze, doesn't she?!

Meanwhile clip two sees Dorium Maldavar (Simon Fisher-Becker, somehow channeling The Ribos Operation's Garron) discussing the oncoming storm with Madame Kovarian (Frances Barber):

Get ready for some fireworks when A Good Man Goes to War on Saturday, June 4th at 6.40 pm on BBC One!
