Tennant to Lead Fright Night 2?

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 09:56 AM PDT

The movie hasn't even been released yet but there are already rumours that David Tennant will be getting a leading role in Fright Night 2, a sequel to a remake that has yet to be released!

The original 1980's Fright Night saw a horror film fan realise that his next door neighbour was a vampire and then had to find a way to deal with him. The remake has the same basic plot but with a few twenty first century updates. In the remake out later this year, Tennant plays the part of Peter Vincent, a magician turned vampire hunter.

The word on Hollywood boulevard is that David's performance is so good that the sequel (which is yet to be announced) will give him a lager leading role with lots more to do; this could well be the actor's big break in America that he's been looking for!

One "source" at the production company said:

"Our source tells us that DreamWorks is considering turning the franchise over to David Tennant for Fright Night 2."

If this happens then that means that the film will be a sequel to a remake of a film that already has a sequel (Fright Night Part 2). And they say that American films are running out of plot ideas!

A Good Man Goes To War - final scene discussion

The BBC have released a couple of videos tying into the climax of the mid-series finale, A Good Man Goes To War. In the first video, Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill discuss how they learned about the "game-changing" reveal at the end of episode, whilst in the second, director Peter Hoar gives his insight in the form of a in-vision commentary for the the final scene. Please note the videos explicitly discuss the plot of the episode, so will be a spoiler for those who have yet to see it.

A Good Man Goes to War

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 09:33 AM PDT

If company can define a good man; the people he loves, the lengths he will go to protect them and also the suffering he will endure because of who he was and what he now has to become then A Good Man Goes to War teeters between both the legend and the inevitable debt.

On the one hand, it's an exciting call to arms, an episode reminiscent of The Empire Strikes Back designed to show off the epic spectacle and drama of a man pushed to the edge.

On Demon's Run, an asteroid base where eye-patch sporting Madame Kovarian holds Amy, the proud mother of the galaxy's most sort after child – Melody Pond – the Doctor is coming.

The events of Demon's Run were long in the making, and as we learn, the Doctor has arguably been sowing those seeds ever since Sexy took him out for a spin across the universe. We have seen echoes of his legendary status in every season since the Ultimate Regeneration of the series but none have really probed this far just why we might call the Doctor a good man. Is the battle of Demon's Run a fixed point in time? A period of history that the Doctor willingly or unwillingly cannot change?

River was adamant that her presence would make no difference to the outcome and without Gallifreyan hands marshalling time with the rigour of a dusty grandfather clock how would the Doctor know where to tread.

In the episode's outstanding moment River attempts to show the Doctor the legacy that comes with his position as a man capable of toppling races.

The term Doctor, once a soothing and healing title for a wise man or healer has become synonymous with 'warrior' – his reaction to the revelation that the Time Lords were viewed as 'weapons' by many races is one of total disbelief. No wondered he was incapable of guessing what was encased inside the Pandorica, a prison designed for the most feared being in the galaxy.

In the early scenes, the oncoming storm maintains a distant presence, corralling all of the creatures in his debt inside the ominously glowing doors of the TARDIS. In one of the early standout moments a Cyber-fleet is cut down to size by a question and a fortunately timed message. It appears not everyone is so willing to cash in their debt.

Those members that do, the emasculated Sontaran Commander Strax and the Silurian Madame Vastra, who, rather outlandishly has found a niche market (and rich food source) in Victorian Era assassinations are both given their moments to shine.

It's only when the episode becomes bogged down with extraneous characters like Lorna Bucket who has the unenviable task of reaffirming why the Doctor is such a wonderful person and why he is also capable of cold hearted revenge within the space of a few scenes and the 'fat man' 'thin man' who turned up, told a few cutting jokes then disappeared for the rest of the episode that the plot threatens to fold in on itself.

The Headless Monks, mention in passing in The Time of Angels are given form but were lacking in substance, though they did provide A Good Man Goes to War's single nasty moment.

Plaudits most go to Matt Smith. In the midst of this seasons twists and turns he has been the one constant throughout and again has delivered an impressively rich performance. He even appears to have altered in appearance slightly from season 31 to 32: he appears older, more comfortable and settled in a role that he's made his own.

During the moments where the Doctor struggles to come to terms with the very human emotion of anger, it's hard not to watch his quivering lip as he attempts to comprehend the lengths he's been pushed to. His standout moment comes with bitter malice as he forever saddles the title 'Colonel Runaway' on the assured shoulders of Colonel Manton.

Doctor Who: A Good Man Goes to War
Karen Gillan brought steely determination to Amy Pond and utter desperation (again resulting in her reaching for a gun) and Arthur Darvill who seems to becoming more lovable every time he plays dress up.

Another standout player from this season has been Alex Kingston and again she continued to find more layers to the now slightly less mysterious River Song. This time there were no 'sweeties' , no coy 'spoilers' as she finally lays her cards on the table and a warm and touching moment of realisation between all the actors involved.

The 'game changing' status maybe an over-the- top description but where Rose, Martha and Donna all had their lives changed by the times they spent travelling in the TARDIS and have equally affected their welcoming host, the Ponds are now intrinsically fixed, there lives entwined with his – the 'lonely Doctor' of that other Moffat classic The Girl in the Fireplace now has a family, a real family rather than the cosy nuclear one that had been in place – for better or for worse – and a reason to hope the Time Lords can fix their damaged reputation… along with several hundred other questions that still need to be answered.

Update: New info added from the week's posts

Here's a round-up of what we know about A Good Man Goes to War, so far.

Official Synopsis:

Amy Pond has been kidnapped and the Doctor is raising an army to rescue her. But as he and Rory race across galaxies, calling in long-held debts and solemnly given promises, his enemies are laying a carefully concealed trap. Both sides will make their sacrifices and River Song must finally reveal her most closely guarded secret to the Doctor.

Doctor Who Magazine Synopsis:

Hanging among the stars in the far distant future, an asteroid – and a bleak grey fortress built into the misshapen rock. This is Demons Run. River Reveal Reactions!

Arthur's is looking like he's gotten us something good for our birthday and doesn't want to spoil it, Karen is shocked (and a little surprised at being shocked) and Matt is oh so proud of what Steven Moffat has achieved.

As reactions to the true identity of River Song go Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvil have covered most of the bases in this quick Q & A from Digital Spy.

All that's left to add is the "OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!" and the invitable "Is it Autumn yet?" from you this Saturday when games will be changed as A Good Man Goes to War.

Further reactions will continue to be added to the faces of Doctor Who fans from 6.40 pm on BBC One and BBC HD!

The End for Matt Smith?

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:52 PM PDT

Over the past few weeks we have seen that the futures of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill have been left open to question following the end of shooting on Doctor Who Series 6 with both talking about looking for other roles. But so far, nothing has come from Matt Smith  – until now.

A review in today's Mirror reveals that Matt is actively courting Hollywood, and with no confirmation yet concerning a seventh series of Doctor Who and no news regarding the beginning of filming (which would normally be expected to begin around now) we're left asking:

Just what is going on, BBC?

First up, we hear that Matt is travelling to LA for meetings…

"I'm going over to Los Angeles this week to dip my head in the pond," Matt reveals. "I am going to be having loads of meetings with film people and that sort of stuff.

"I have a lot of ambitions. I would like one day to direct and I just want to keep doing quality work. LA is kinda groovy – I really like it out there."

Now we all know that many try and fail to make it in the USA, but to be in position to try, surely you have to be prepared to leave everything behind back in the UK…?

"I take each day as it comes," says Matt wisely. "You can only try your best and see what rubs off.

"Would I get a big part, who knows? Sadly, that is not up to me.

"That all depends on people in the American film industry and whether they want to put me there.

"But I certainly won't complain if that happens."

Clearly, Matt isn't saying "I'm done with Doctor Who" but at the same time let's be honest. Arthur and Karen seem to be moving on and Matt's flying to the USA for meetings about movies, which indicates that either he's left the show, or the next series has been cancelled or postponed…

Doctor Who Anime Featuring the 3rd Doctor - Final Version [VIDEO]

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:36 PM PDT

This video has been in the making for some time now as I have seen various earlier incomplete versions of it over the last few years now I believe. Originally created as a mock trailer by OtaKing77077 (on YouTube) has expanded into a mini-episode. Because it was originally meant only as mock trailer, it lacks some narrative. It is done in the style of 1980's anime featuring 1970's Doctor Who mostly (it is a 3rd Doctor Jon Pertwee story). It features many original voice clips of various characters from the series as well as some original vocal work. Almost every iconic aspect of 1970s and some 1980s Doctor Who is depicted here except K9 perhaps.
