Vworp 4 Guests Announced!

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 02:10 AM PDT

What are you upto on July 3rd? I'll tell you now – if you're in the UK with reasonable means of reaching Manchester, you're heading to the Lass O'Gowrie pub on Charles Street to enjoy the thrills of an intimate, friendly Doctor Who convention in the shape of Vworp 4!

Doctor Who - Vworp 4This is our fourth annual Doctor Who pubcon, this time scheduled for Sunday, 3rd July 2011 as part of LassFest (www.lassfest.co.uk) our month-long fringe festival of arts, culture and music at the Lass.

As you can see from the poster to the right (click for a larger version), guests from the worlds of Doctor Who scheduled to appear (subject to work commitments) include:

* Katy Manning (Everyone's favourite Jo Grant!)
* Bob Baker (Co-creator of K9 and co-writer of numerous Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker classics)
* Paul Tams (Co-creator of the new K9 series)
* Andrew Cartmel (Script editor during the McCoy era and visionary)
* Ben Aaronovich (Writer of Remembrance of the Daleks, Battlefield and several seminal New Adventures)
* Adrian Salmon (Prolific Time Team, Cybermen and comic strip artist – including the amazing Forever Dreaming)
* Martin Geraghty (THE Doctor Who comic strip artist of the nineties and noughties)
* Dez Skinn (Founding editor of DWM and raconteur extraordinaire)
* Peter Ware (Current DWM Assistant Editor); and
* The simply incomparable Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre

Additionally, the organizers have the hugely pleasing news of being able to announce that they will be joined on by sixties era Script Editor Donald Tosh – Corrie and Doctor Who royalty in our eyes, no less…

Donald Tosh began his career in the theatre but later joined Granada TV where, amongst many other projects, he developed the format for a new regular soap drama which was eventually to become Coronation Street. After six years he moved to the BBC and found himself working as story editor on Compact. After eighteen months he transferred to become story editor on Doctor Who from The Time Meddler to The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve. He is also credited as co-writer of The Massacre…. Donald found that he did rather more that just editing some of the scripts, he virtually wrote the first half of The Daleks' Master Plan and completely re-wrote The Massacre….

With so few production team members left from the Hartnell era you'd be MAD not to take this chance to hear Donald's six favourite things about his time on the programme.

If Vworp 4 is anything as good as the previous events, then you're all in for a very good time indeed, so take this chance to get your tickets booked.

Tickets are a *SNIP at £19.95 a head and available at www.wegottickets.com/event/116912!

You can find the Lass O'Gowrie at:

36 Charles Street

John Williams with his Shed of the Year 2011 finalist. South Wales ArgusOver in the UK, police boxes have featured a number of times in the National Shed of the Year awards held by Cuprinol's We Love Sheds, and this year sees one through to the finals. It was built by design engineer John Williams from Newport, who said:
We had a wendy house in our garden, but when our three kids we're too old for it, we dismantled it. The space left was the right shape for a Tardis. It was either that or a Dalek, and my wife, Fiona, hates Daleks, so she reluctantly agreed. It was probably the better option as we can use it to store garden furniture.

It's the same size inside unfortunately. I've not yet worked out how to make it bigger. I don't think I'm clever enough to work that out. I think I would be a multi-millionaire if I could do that.

I built it as a tribute to a programme that has inspired me since I was seven and to add an element of quirkiness to my garden. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

His competition includes a Bygones Museum in Scratby, Norfolk by Dad's Army enthusiast Darren Stride, a Diner and "The George and Dragon". The winner will be announced on the 4th July.

Paul Hawkins with his Technology project. Wiltshire Gazette and HeraldAnother TARDIS garden shed in the news originated from student Paul Hawkins, who built his own as part of a school technology project. The project took some four months to complete and cost around £1000.

The seventeen year old is a founding member of Charity Daleks, which aims to raise money for charities such as The British Heart Foundation, PHAB and Marie Curie.

Zachary Smith with his 5th Birthday present. Daily Mail/ApexThe trend continues, as Zachary Smith got a surprise for his fifth birthday in the form of his very own TARDIS! It was built by his father, Lee, who said:
I have had the idea to do this for a long time as Zachary's such a big fan. But there's not many people who can say they have a Tardis in their back garden so I quite like the kudos.

I was considering connecting it to the basement (to make it bigger on the inside), but thought better of it.

Zachary's mother Anna added:
We just didn't have time to finish it for his birthday so the next day I took Zachary out and Lee and my father brought it over in pieces from a garage in Yeovil where they had made it.

Zachary was absolutely gobsmacked when he saw it. He's been thrilled ever since.

He's a huge Doctor Who fan and loves Matt Smith. We managed to get together an authentic costume for him too. All his friends compete to see who is going to be the Doctor when they visit now.

Finally, a success story in the world of preservation. Back in 2009 the media covered the plight of a police box in Somerton, Newport, which whilst a Grade II listed building was in danger of completely collapsing due to "concrete rot". However, a Cadw grant at the beginning of 2010 was made available to restore the box, which can now be seen once again standing in all its glory!

Miracle Day Character Videos

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 09:27 PM PDT

I wanna live forever!…pah…it's nothing but misery. You'd think at least some good would come out of it but if these character videos for Torchwood: Miracle Day are anything to go by not being able to sing the chorus to Fame with the same conviction anymore is the least of everyone's troubles.

Serving as an introduction to the misery Captain Jack, Gwen Cooper, Esther Drummond, Rex Matheson, Jilly Alexander Kitzinger and everyone's favourite electioneering non-corpse Oswald Danes all spill a host of little spoilers which, thanks to the videos not being available in this region, have been cobbled together in this  4 minute blow to the temple.

Torchwood: Miracle Day Character Videos by doctorwho-tv

Its riverting, brooding stuff with Bill Pullman giving a standout performance, John Barrowman being a complete ham, and, in the most interesting development, Torchwood's role as conspiracy breaker being called into question by just about everyone including former members of the Scooby Gang.

Torchwood: Miracle Day is a co-production between the Starz Network in the US and BBC Worldwide in the UK- the air date for the US is the 7th July with the UK airdate still yet to be confirmed.
