BBC to Sell Television Centre

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 06:24 AM PDT

Finally confirming plans first announced in 2007, the BBC has opted to sell BBC Television Centre, the iconic heart of BBC broadcasting since the 1960s.

Over the years the building – recognisable by its famous doughnut shape – has been used for recording legendary British shows including Doctor Who and Monty Python's Flying Circus. Holding over 5,000 staff at the five core buildings in White City, London, the centre is likely to be vacated by 2015 when relocation to Wales and Manchester of various BBC programming and services as well as other locations around the south east of England are likely to be completed.

The BBC have already invited parties to register their interest by July 1, with the corporation creating a list of potential purchasers and joint-venture partners with which to move forward.

"With high investor demand for commercial property in London and a shortage of landmark sites as distinctive as Television Centre, we anticipate strong competition for both conventional and innovative proposals,"

said Head of BBC Workplace Chris Kane. The buildings are currently owned by and run by a BBC subsidiary, Studios & Post Production, although the future of this business is not yet known. The complex, which covers a 14 acre site, is expected to raise between £150 million and £300 million for the BBC, which generates the bulk of its annual budget of £3.5 via the £145.50 licence fee.

So, the end of not only a major aspect of classic Doctor Who, but of British popular culture. A sad day.

Sixth Doctor Flip's the Companion

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 05:53 AM PDT

The Sixth Doctor is to get a new audio companion and its an old friend. Lisa Greenwood will reprise her role of Philippa 'Flip' Jackson in a three episode mini-series starting in January 2012.

The young Essex girl Jackson had previously featured in The Crimes of Thomas Brewster where she and friend Jarod took a tube ride to another planet while the Doctor found himself caught in a battle of wits with time travelling Victorian guttersnipe Thomas Brewster.

A moment of like minded clarity between Executive Producer Nicholas Briggs and Line Producer David Richardson during work on Thomas Brewster saw the likable, brave Flip elevated to companion status.

Lisa Greenwood can next be seen in BBC2′s new flagship drama series The Hour, a complicated and exhilerating look behind the scenes of a broadcast news room in London, 1956 written by BAFTA Winner Abi Morgan (Sex Traffic)

We Want You – Who?!

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 01:30 AM PDT

Do you like Doctor Who? Do you like to draw comic books? Ever wanted to put those two interests together? If so, we're looking for you…

As many of you may know back in 2009 we held an artist search looking for talented artists to pencil an original Doctor Who comic strip scripted by Kasterborous Editor in Chief Christian Cawley. The search was such a massive success, leading to our very well received the three part comic Time Leech, penciled by such talent as Justin Abbot and Rick Lundeen.

We had such a great time working on the project that we thought we just needed to have another. Back in May we launched our latest artist search for our new one-off comic adventure and while the response has been overwhelming we wanted to remind everyone that submissions are still being accepted. So any of you artists out there who may not have heard of our competition, or any or you who have friends who you think should be drawing our favorite Time Lord, now is the time to spread the word and get those submissions in!

As before here's how things will work:

The competition is going to work in three phases:

* Initial submission – a sample of your work, Doctor Who related or otherwise. If we like it, we will ask you to illustrate a…
* Single page from the script – and if this is what we're looking for, you will be invited to illustrate the…
* Final strip!

The Kasterborous judging team consists of K Editor Extraordinary Christian Cawley, myself Brian Terranova, Kasterborous Art Legend Anthony Dry, Vworp Vworp and Black Scrolls guru Gareth Kavanagh and one other, yet-to-be-announced-but-completely-hoopy-frood.

Remember this project is made by fans and made out of respect for the show and the fun of the project, and the chance to showcase you talent. Of course due to copyright reasons, there is no financial reward involved for this project, but having your work enjoyed by all our Kasterborous readers and then some, well, that isn't too bad really.

Send your entries to comics@kasterborous.com – we look forward to hearing from you!

Competition Results

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 12:09 AM PDT

After much debate from Joseph Lidster, author of several Sarah Jane Adventures stories, he has chosen us a fantastic winner! Congratulations to Paul Guest, now the proud owner of the BBC radio episodes box set.

"What a great selection and how difficult to choose between them! I love how there are such a variety of styles – cartoon images, beautiful artwork, clever use of photos. I especially love how all the different Sarah Jane eras are represented – from her first appearance in The Time Warrior right through to the last series of The Sarah Jane Adventures – a fantastic tribute to the gorgeous Lis Sladen. It really is difficult to choose between them as they're all so different. After to-ing and fro-ing between a couple, I think I'm going to choose the one of Sarah Jane leaning against the TARDIS in the Attic. I like its simplicity and how, in one picture, it represents both Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures. It's also a fantastic picture of Lis as Sarah Jane. Tough, ready to protect the Earth and her friends but with just a hint of a smile because she's having a whale of a time. And, in some ways, that sums up Lis – she worked so hard and was so dedicated to the character and the series, but she also had such a great time doing it."

The rest of the competition entries can be found here, and what a wonderful bunch they are! I'd like to thank everyone who entered for their time and effort on some beautiful creations.

BBC Television Centre goes on sale

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 10:58 PM PDT

The BBC have moved to the next stage of their disposal of London's Television Centre today with an announcement that the site has formally been placed onto the market.

Chris Kane, the Head of BBC Workplace, said:
Our key objective is to maximise value to the BBC. With high investor demand for commercial property in London and a shortage of landmark sites as distinctive as Television Centre, we anticipate strong competition for both conventional and innovative proposals.

Television Centre is seen by many as the 'home' of the BBC and the source of many successful series over the decades since its opening in 1960, including of course "classic Doctor Who; however, the Corporation has been planning the sale of the site since 2007, citing the need to "reduce the property portfolio" in order to "deliver a smaller but fitter organisation." Today, Richard Deverell, W12 Programme Director, commented:
Television Centre has played an extraordinary and central role in the history of the BBC, which will not be forgotten. Our primary aim of the sale is to maximise the value to the BBC and Licence Fee payer whilst ensuring the teams and operations based there are successfully relocated.

Last year, the BBC's in-house magazine Ariel reported that the partially listed landmark "could form the centrepiece of a community of media organisations, performing arts groups, facility providers and even fashion houses." Today, the press release re-iterated that "apart from a conventional sale, the Corporation is keen to investigate opportunities for redeveloping Television Centre that preserve the key listed elements of the iconic building, but also afford the opportunity to establish a hub for creative businesses and a visitor destination."

Portal Awards Nominations 2011

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 10:06 PM PDT

Doctor Who: Portal AwardThe annual Portal Awards have been announced by Airlock Alpha, with Doctor Who once more well represented within the various categories.

Best Actor sees Matt Smith nominated for his role as The Doctor; he will face competition from Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead), Sean Bean (Game of Thrones), Joshua Jackson (Fringe), and Eddie McClintock (Warehouse 13). This award was won overwhelmingly by David Tennant last year with some 68% of the vote (with second place going to John Barrowman with 10%!).

Similarly, Best Actress sees co-star Karen Gillan pitted against Lena Headley (Game of Thrones), Anna Torv (Fringe), Paula Malcomson (Caprica), and Summer Glau (The Cape). Gillan lost out last year to Eve Myles for her portrayal as Gwen Cooper in Torchwood: Children of Earth.

Doctor Who itself is nominated for Best Television Series, which it won last year (Torchwood came second). This year sees it up against Fringe, Game of Thrones, Stargate: Universe and The Walking Dead. Also, The Doctor's Wife has been nominated in the Best Television Episode category, facing episodes from Fringe, Stargate: Universe, Game of Thrones and Caprica.

Alex Kingston has been nominated for Best Television Special Guest, an award she won last year for The Time of Angels; this time her role in Day of the Moon is being recognised, and she faces competition from another Doctor Who guest, Michael Gambon for A Christmas Carol. Christopher Lloyd and Leonard Nimoy are also nominated for Fringe, plus Michael Rosenbaum for Smallville.

The late Elisabeth Sladen has been nominated for the Gene Roddenberry Award which honours lifetime achievement; the other nominees are H.G. Wells, J.J. Abrams, Rick Berman and Gene L. Coon.

The full list of categories are available from Airlock Alpha, and fans will be able to vote from the 25th June until 24th July.

Classic Era Items Up For Auction

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 09:48 PM PDT

A veritable smorgasbord of classic era Doctor Who items are going under the hammer at Bonhams Entertainment Memorabilia auction at Knightsbridge on the 29th June.

The gavel banging cash-fest will include such fine wares as:

Lot 111: Jon Pertwee's Inverness cape: as worn during the the risible 30th anniversary episode Dimensions In Time- with an estimate of £4,000-£5000,

Lot 111A: A rehearsal script for Dr Who And The War Games: pretty self explanitory, this comes from episode seven and includes annotations, a related memo and will cut a £200-£300 chunk out of your wallet.

Lot 112: A TARDIS key: harking from the 1988 season and including such detail as a Prydonian seal, a chain, and is accompanied with a statement of authenticity from The Model Unit confirming it was part of a batch made especially for that series- unlocking this key will cost you £2,500-£3,000.

Lot 113: a collection of thirty four re-release film posters: a set comprising of six one sheet posters for Dr. Who and the Daleks and twenty eight Dalek Invasion Earth 2150 AD all rolled and ready to be auctioned off on ebay for just £200-£300.

Lot 114: 'Mona Lisa' painting from City Of Death: one of several Mona's produced for the Douglas Adams penned classic. Rumour has it this one hung in the production offices of Doctor Who during the 80′s- the lady with the ambiguous counternance will set you back £1,000- £2,000.

Lot 115: A miniature TARDIS model, created for exhibition purposes: consisting of paper, plastic and the odd board this model is the cheapest lot of the day setting you back a miniscule £150-£200.

Lot 116: costume from Resurrection Of The Daleks, 1984 & Lot 117: costume from Resurrection Of The Daleks, 1984: both lots consist of various prison guard/prison ship uniforms all with ballpointed names in the collars so they don't get mixed up in the cloak room at the end of the day. Both lots are estimated to raise between £300-£400.

Head to Bonhams for a full list of the items available both Doctor Who and otherwise.

Stormwatch and Demon Knights Interviews

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 09:16 PM PDT

Just popped in to keep you up to date. Here's a Demon Knights interview at Comic Book Resources, and here's one about Stormwatch at Newsarama. I've seen some odd reactions to that latter interview on the net, quoting me as saying the book will 'explain' why the Wildstorm and DC Universes are now the same one. But that doesn't need explaining. Stormwatch has always been part of the DCU. And I'll leave it at that.

In other comics news, the Spirit of Hope anthology is now available to pre-order. It's a charity collection by some great names in the industry, including Liam Sharp, Henry Flint and Mark Buckingham, all proceeds of which are going to help disaster relief, via the Second Harvest charity and the New Zealand Red Cross. There's a choice of two lovely covers, by Knight and Squire's own Jimmy Broxton and by Mike Allred. It's a great way to help a great cause, so do take a look. Cheerio!
