No full series for Doctor Who in 2012

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 08:38 AM PDT

BBC1 Controller Danny Cohen today revealed that, after much speculation generated since the Private Eye article and subsequent BBC announcements last week, Doctor Who will indeed be returning in a curtailed form during 2012.

Speaking at the Church and Media Conference this afternoon, Cohen's comments were relayed via Twitter, with BBC Merseyside's Religious Editor Wayne Clarke reporting: "Danny Cohen says there won't be a full series of Doctor Who in 2012, but a special run for the anniversary in 2013". The BBC's Entertainment Correspondent Liza Mzimba confirmed the comments this evening, adding that other reported comments by Cohen on the decision being made to enable head writer Steven Moffat more time to write his other hit series Sherlock were light-hearted and not meant to be taken seriously.

No other details on how many episodes will comprise the 2012 run at present, though the BBC confirmed last week that fourteen episodes had been commissioned, including this year's Christmas Special, with Matt Smith at the helm in the role as The Doctor.

Confirmed: No full series of Doctor Who in 2012

It has been confirmed that there won't be a full series of Doctor Who in 2012. The news was brought to light earlier tonight through a tweet from BBC News Entertainment Correspondent Lizo Mzimba, who posted: "There will not be a full series of Dr Who in 2012! No Full Series in 2012

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 06:12 AM PDT

We reported earlier that BBC One Controller Danny Cohen revealed at the Church and Media conference this afternoon that there will be no series of Doctor Who in 2012, with just a single Christmas special commissioned in advance of the 50th anniversary 2013 series.

It seems that this wasn't entirely accurate – our apologies for the mix-up.

After temporarily pulling the item, we've since found out via the BBC's big Doctor Who fan @lizo_mzimba on Twitter:

Bit of confusion, to summarise: no FULL 13 episode series of Dr Who in 2012. So some episodes will still go out in 2012. Remainder in 2013.

Which tidies up the previous misunderstanding concerning "no series in 2012″, by the BBC's Wayne Clarke:

Danny Cohen says there won't be a full series of Doctor Who in 2012, but a special run for the anniversary in 2013.#cmn11

Now if all of this has come as a bit of a surpise to you, it actually goes back to last week, when we relayed this news published in the latest Private Eye:

Programme chiefs in London were horrified to learn recently that BBC Wales is proposing not to make a full series of Doctor Who in 2012, but instead to put the programme on hiatus and merely bash out four "specials" as it did in 2009. Which will leave an enormous hole in the BBC1 Saturday night schedule and a bigger one in the profits of BBC Worldwide, and will mean the corporation will be paying lead actor Matt Smith to spend most of the rest of this year doing nothing.

The immense fuss that this caused was then smoothed over by a pair of Tweets (via Twitter, rather than press releases) from BBC Head of Comms Sam Hodges and showrunner Steven Moffat:

#DoctorWho is returning. Fourteen new episodes have been commissioned with Matt Smith as The Doctor #bbc1

14 eps + Matt DEFINITELY. I've got a plan and I'm NOT TELLING YOU WHAT IT IS. Now hush or River shoots you with her Spoiler Gun.#formaqueue

We had expected a series to "straddle" Christmas 2012, so this latest news isn't unexpected.

Of course, a lack of Doctor Who throughout most of 2012 will be disappointing, of course, but with official magazines, fanzines, DVDs, audios, books, comic strips and graphic novels not to mention amateur fan works and various websites such as this, 2012 won't really be a Doctor Who-free period – and 2013 looks set to be FANTASTIC!

“Gonads” Steal TARDIS!

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 03:45 AM PDT

Doctor Who fan Kaitlyn Iadevaia of Oklahoma was delighted with the way her home-built TARDIS turned out. The police box model which she worked on with her father, also a fan.

So imagine their distress when they found thatthe six-foot tall replica was gone from its regular home in the family backyard!

"It didn't have property value," the girl said. "But it did have sentimental value. I'd just really like it back."

Meanwhile, Kaitlyn's father was clearly riled, and called the thieves "big gonads", possibly the greatest insult you'll hear all year.

"I can't see why anyone would take the darn thing, unless they're a big Doctor Who fan and want to put it in their bedroom."

Apparently, police are investigating the theft of the replica, which was curiously described as a "bus shelter", and weighs a not-inconsiderable 300 pounds.

We would hope that the perpetrators of this thoughtless theft see sense and return the blue box to Kaitlyn.

Let's De-Story Doctor Who!

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 02:45 AM PDT

We're not really keen on showing the world just how dim some Doctor Who fans can be, but in this case we'll make an exception, for the frankly barmy comment sent to the renowned Neil Gaiman after his episode The Doctor's Wife.

The popular writer recently updated his blog at NeilGaiman.com with a must-read question and answer session which gives a good idea into some of the aspects of development of an episode of Doctor Who few will forget.

Some of the stuff in there is fascinating, such as the missing dialogue, why an Ood was used, which episodes newcomers should view, Gaiman's control over the choice of TARDIS interior:

Why didn't you make it so the old control room we saw was from the 1980s? I was so sure that was what it was going to be.

Because I did not have the ability to ask the producers back then to leave their sets up until I needed them.

…and other wonderful snippets.

However among the quite intelligent questions and Gaiman's answers werwas e this little gem…

Did you have House destory [sic] the David Tennant Control Room to show you hated it? Now it doesn't exist.Of course it exists. The TARDIS keeps it archived. House deleted it, but I have no doubt that, once they were in a place where that could happen, the TARDIS undeleted it, tidied it up and put it somewhere out of the way, along with the other things she keeps close to her chest.

And hated it? No, I loved it. Here is a photograph of me loving it.

Now, we know what you're thinking – the original message was by some mad 15 year old David Tennant fan girl having a hissy fit over the restoration and subsequent deletion of the TARDIS console room used by both the Ninth and Tenth Doctors.

But that would be drawing unnecessary conclusions, not least about David Tennant fan girls but also about the behviour of Kasterborous Associate Editor Brian Terranova. I'm not saying it was him, but you hadn't considered that possibility, had you…?

Torchwood Miracle Day prequels

Plot synopses and cover art for the next three Torchwood reads have been unveiled by BBC books, who will release these prequels to Torchwood: Miracle Day starting this summer, a couple of weeks after the first episode of the upcoming ten-part run is scheduled to air in America.

First Born by James Goss follows fugitives Gwen, Rhys, and their newborn daughter as they hide out in a caravan in a village cheerfully named Rawbone.  Apparently some of the townspeople take "an unhealthy interest" in the baby.  And of course, this being a Torchwood story, there will no doubt be something to do with aliens in there somewhere.  You can find out for yourself on July 21st.

The second story, Long Time Dead by Sarah Pinborough, which takes place in jolly ol' Cardiff, seems to feature very few familiar characters, as it centers around a fellow named Tom Cutler, who watches intently as the government excavates the remains of the Torchwood Hub.  It also looks like we may be hearing from one Suzie Costello again… Interesting indeed.  This one will be out on August 4th.

Finally, The Men Who Sold The World by Guy Adams tells the pre-Miracle Day story of CIA agent Rex Matheson experience one of his first encounters with "experimental tech" in the form of imported British cargo marked 'Torchwood' that's been linked to a squad from the CIA Special Activities Division turning rogue and a number of unusual deaths.  Release date: August 18th.

When you try to compare what Torchwood novels have been in the past – the further adventures of an agency "outside the government and beyond the police" – to this lineup, the differences are striking.  These seem to mostly be one-offs with individuals rather than a whole team, and even more intriguingly, there's no sign of Captain Jack Harkness anywhere.  Without this occasional companion to the Doctor in the mix, it does get a little bit easier to argue that Torchwood is less Doctor Who spinoff and more its own thing these days.

Still, these sound like interesting tales for any of you TorchWhovians out there, and you can pre-order any of the three books from Amazon at their respective links in the paragraphs above for a mere £4.12 (RRP £6.99)!

Le DVD de saison 5!

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 07:59 PM PDT

Just in time for tomorrow's French DVD release of Doctor Who Series 4 and the 2009 specials (and re-release of Series 1-3), France 4 has revealed the time-of-year (if not a specific date) for the Series 5 DVD to be this autumn, thanks to the ever-growing announcement medium that is Twitter.

What's more, purists who tend to not be fans of the hard work that goes into dubbing over the original voices in foreign language media can rejoice, knowing that Matt Smith's voice will be present and accounted for, with subtitles for the English-impaired.

Our ever-reliable friend Aurélie Demonchaux of the French Whovian Beans on Toast forum provided us not only with this scoop, but also a translation of the original tweets that spawned this news between France 4 and a Who fan who also seems enthusiastic about a certain annoying youthful pop icon:

Hello, when will Series 5 of Doctor Who be released on DVD? please will it include the original English version with French subtitles ? THANK YOU.
this fall : DVD release of #doctorwho Series 5. It will include the original English version with French subtitles :)
There you go, French people.  Come Christmastime, you'll be able to give all your friends, family members, and selves a bit of every Doctor Who season since 2005, barring of course the current sixth/thirty-second season that we're not even sure we English speakers will have by then!

If you happen to speak and understand French, you've been cordially invited to join the fun at the Beans on Toast forum by discussing this news on this thread!
