(So, the story so far: Doctor Who fans concerned about the lack of an announcement concerning the commissioning of Series 7 were dismayed to find an article in Private Eye revealing that the broadcast of the next run would be delayed. BBC personnel moved to dispel talk of cancellation by confirming that Series 7 had been commissioned, but omitted to mention the likely scheduling, and made their announcements via Twitter rather than an official BBC Press Release.

Steven Moffat, meanwhile, has been going steadily greyer and more incomprehensible, fending off messages on Twitter using the copy/paste function on his laptop.)

Now you're up to speed: the saga rumbles on today, with the BBC News site publishing details (two days later) of BBC One Controller Danny Cohen's Q&A sessions at the Church and Media conference, where we first heard that the 2012 episode might be delayed/pushed back in some way.

The following is presumably supposed to be the BBC's polished response to rumours that started after the event on Tuesday. However it features a few contentious points that have caused showrunner Steven Moffat to response on Twitter (see below).

According to the BBC, in an article titled "Sherlock's success means less Doctor Who in 2012″ Cohen said that "not all of the commissioned stories would be transmitted in 2012."

"There will be some episodes, but there won't be a full series, so we won't have a 13-part run."

Also, when questioned about the number of episodes that would be aired in 2012, given Moffat's involvement with Sherlock, Danny Cohen responsed:

"He [Moffat] needs enough time to get that done and then start work on the next series of Doctor Who. So there will be [Doctor Who] episodes, but not as many."

"There's only so many hours a day he can be awake. The man has to sleep and eat, and he's got a family."

"Steven Moffat is the creative driving force behind Doctor Who. He also, rather magically at the same time, created and got to air Sherlock. So we have to get that balance right."

"There'll be more episodes again in 2013, for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. So that's a big year."

But to top it all off, Steven Moffat responded to suggestions of a conflict of interest between Sherlock and Doctor Who, stating on Twitter:

The scheduling of Dr Who has got NOTHING to with Sherlock. On the plus side THE BBC SPELLED MY NAME RIGHT!!!!

So why the ?

As we've been stating on this site for several weeks now, all this needed was the BBC to let fans and interested parties know that there would be a break, and the issue could have been put to bed and we could have moved on. Instead it has been allowed to drag on in the most embarrassing and shoddy manner.

Whether true or not, the BBC could have attributed the delay to the Olympics, or the new studio complex in South Wales, but instead nothing like this has been forthcoming. The BBC One Controller has said one thing, the showrunner has indicated that this is inaccurate.

It has got messy, but not only that, this is one of the most inept displays of public relations from the BBC in a long time.

Doctor Who Nano GunRemember those red glowy palm spots that the Doctor injected in everyone in Day of the Moon? The useful gadget that his friends could use to record messages to themselves about the presence of The Silence?

Well, Character Options have made a toy out of it. Not the red glowy palm spots (as that would be cool) but the Star Trek: TNG style innoculiser/injector device, which you can see here has a sort of gun metal grey finish.

According to the pack, you can:

Record secret messages and play them back using this replica Nano-recorder and save yourself from the Silent!

If you're desperate to fill your shelves with some of the more frivolous and irrelevent Doctor Who Series 6 merchandise available, hitty da linky to head over to Forbidden Planet where the £13.99 item can be pre-ordered in advance of its June 28th availability date.

Don't forget, now. And if you do, write it down when you remember.

War…What is it Good For?

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 01:52 AM PDT

So you've had just over ten days to catch up with the fascinating results of the Doctor Who Series 6 Episode 7, and as a concession to our American readers watching the show on BBC America we've left it a little later than usual to bring you our roundup of reaction and reviews to A Good Man Goes to War from around the web.

Before continuing, SFX have reported this week that the episode was viewed 7.57 million people, a big step up of over 2 million on the initial overnight figure of 5.5 million, although with the UEFA Champions League Final and Britain's Got Sheepdogs on ITV, the audience share was down to 31%. Nevetheless, this is once again a strong showing from Doctor Who.

Many thanks to Kasterborous contributors Andrew Reynolds, Patrick Riley and Mez Burdett for helping me to compile the following, comprehensive and in many ways ultimate review roundup for the Doctor Who Series 6 mid-season finale A Good Man Goes to War!

In addition to suggesting that A Good Man Goes To War was a beacon of hope at the end of a run of mostly ho-hum episodes, SFX points out that the Grand Moff seems to have returned to his pre-Who roots with this story, and then proceeds to count some of the many instances within the forty-five minute span when a joke was told or a gag was performed that might have passed over the heads of the children watching.

"…typical Steven "Coupling" Moffat! A lot of us – doubtless not purer-minded youngsters of course – could be forgiven for thinking "Incest!" (when it's hinted that River might actually be the Doctor's mother) and "The Doctor is Melody's dad!" (on a few occasions, including when he says "It's mine", although he's referring to the cot) – plus there's the reptile woman and her female companion, which is a first even for this most omnisexual of television shows; it felt like Moffat was feeding fan fiction/spin-off writers with that pair. The centralness to the plot of Melody's conception and its timing might have raised the odd eyebrow in the odd house too."

Crave Online highly praises the episode, but that doesn't stop its reviewer from pointing out a couple of plot holes regarding the River reveal that many of us have likely thought of by now…

"I'm not sure if Moffat has entirely played fair about River's true identity. I think that he did know she was part Time Lord in her first appearance, since he went out of his way to suggest that no Time Lord could survive what ultimately killed River. But River was pretty nonchalant around Amy last season and she didn't seem to know who Rory was in the fifth season finale. For that matter, how could River have stayed in the timeline when Rory was erased from history? That would take some explaining if Moffat or the other writers ever decide to address it."

Doctor Who - A Good Man Goes to War
This piece from Examiner.com commits the cardinal sin of spelling Stephen [sic] Moffat's name wrong (quit staring at me like that!) and actually is more post-episode speculation than review.  But it does raise a good point about why River is addressed the way she often is, which harks back to the recently-reported news that the Moff's idea of the word "Doctor" not being original to humans and other civilizations has been in his head for a very long time.

"[River] is called Doctor Song, which we learn from this episode that Doctor is another name Great Warrior.  I always wondered why she was called Doctor Song."

There were never going to be any straight answers. River Song's true identity has been canonised and like anything that wraps itself in the far too long to be practical scarf of Whodom; it's ripe for a discussion or twelve! Let's make it feel welcome…

In ushering in this new, exciting facet to the Whoinverse Big Shiny Robot have taken a moment to tackle the issue of Amy Pond: Have the events leading up to and including the heartbreaking moment of the second ganger double cross reduced her to little more than a victim?

"Amy was pregnant, kidnapped, and held against her will. There was not a whole lot she could do to get herself out of the situation without getting herself killed. The Doctor promised her he'd find her, and he did. If Rory needed rescuing, Amy would save him. Amy is strong and assertive, and "victim" is one of the last words I would use to describe her. One of the best lines in this episode is when Rory says "Melody Williams" and Amy's response is "Ugh. Melody Williams is a geography teacher, Melody Pond is a super hero".

Of course we still don't know how willingly Amy was taken. Did she fight back against her as yet to be seen captures? Assuming that Madame Kovarian is just a front for something far more sinister…perhaps something more Silent?

Doctor Who - A Good Man Goes to War

Looking at the wider issue of companion relationships Buzz Focus lets slip its own dirty little secret:

"Now, I'm going to say something controversial, something that might not endear me to fellow Whovians: I've never been wild about River Song. Sure, since her introduction in Season Four's "Silence in the Library" she's been set up as a love interest for The Doctor but love interests and The Doctor don't usually mesh well dramatically, in my book, since the stakes have always been about the relationships and not about THE END OF THE UNIVERSE AS WE KNOW IT (and those relationships tend to be ones that The Doctor could easily walk away from, which is why Catherine Tate's Donna Noble, who was a friend first and foremost, was the best Doctor's companion until Amy Pond)."

Newsarama have been plotting new unseen adventures and would definitely like to see more of the show stealing pair of Commander Strax and Madam Vastra:

"Much like The Corsair from Neil Gaiman's episode, they appear fully formed, with an apparent complete but never revealed history, and leave the viewer salivating for more details. They are both similar in that they are members of races that view The Doctor as an enemy, but are unique in that they have both been given by him either a penance or a punishment, depending on one's point of view. Strax clearly sees his as a punishment, being made to serve as a nurse to "lesser races", but serve he does, and judging from how good at it he is, he's putting his heart (and apparently, breasts) into it."

So as you can see, the reviews and reputation of A Good Man Goes to War seems pretty is generally high.

Tor.com was especially happy:

"The best thing about the episode was the feeling that we're involved in an Epic Story. From the rapid-fire opening to the revelation of River's parents, from Rory's heroism to The Doctor's comeuppance, to the entire thing revolving around a fought-over child, this episode felt like a Big Story that is passed down from generation to generation. It felt like a fable that should have always existed, and now does. Moffat used a made-up nursery rhyme in "The Beast Below" in Series 5. Here, he has River recite a poem about Demon's Run, which adds to the feeling of this being an actual legend."

Doctor Who - A Good Man Goes to War

Meanwhile, SlantMagazine.com enjoyed the epic scale of the episode:

"Another excellent piece of acting from Matt Smith, as the Doctor is brought up sharply against the idea that he has raised this enemy up against himself without knowing it, simply by being who he is. Kovarian interrupts his musing, and tells him that the child is "hope. Hope in this endless, bitter war…against you, Doctor." She gloats that she has fooled him twice with the same trick, sending him running back to where his allies (joined by Lorna) are under attack from the Headless Monks."

And Hollywood.com was almost crying with good things to say about A Good Man Goes to War, praising Steven Moffat to the heavens:

"This was a fantastic episode. A+. 10/10. Everything Moffat teased and I hoped for, happened. It was glorious. It simultaneously began in the middle of action, answered major questions, gave us more questions, and then set up the series for YEARS to come. How could I give it anything less than my best?"

What did you think? Did A Good Man Goes to War deserve such high praise? You can see what Kasterborous thought of the adventure in our review, or by listening to last week's podKast.

Experience move to Cardiff (update)

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 01:23 AM PDT

Earlier this month, BBC Worldwide revealed details on its plans to install the Doctor Who Experience at Cardiff Bay during the spring next year. Today, Welsh media outlets have been reporting on how this project will be partly financed by Cardiff County Council through its council tax revenue.

A council spokesperson explained how the initial financing will prove ultimately beneficial to the city's future economy:
The council is progressing the feasibility of a commercial agreement to house the BBC Worldwide Doctor Who Experience on a site at Porth Teigr, Cardiff Bay.

The principle of the deal is for all the council's costs to be covered by income generated by the scheme.

Feasibility costs are between £50,000 and £60,000 but projections show that the Doctor Who Experience could bring in around £13m per year to the city's economy. The Doctor Who Experience would attract 40,000 new overnight tourists each year, worth some £7m per annum, and will support over 200 full time equivalent jobs in the city each year.
Councillor David Walker observed:
Once the council has agreed terms with the BBC we then need to know the investment that the public purse will make in this development.
However, what was initially thought to be a permanent home for the Doctor Who Experience has now been revealed as a temporary measure being built on land that is earmarked for residential purposes; permission is currently being sought to construct what is being described as "a massive tent" to house the adventure and exhibition aspects of the attraction over the next five years.

The Gunfighters

Disc One of the EarthStory double release from the BBC and 2|Entertain is this 1966 adventure, in which the TARDIS materialises in Tombstone, Arizona; so The Doctor can find a dentist. Unfortunately, the dentist is one Doc Holliday and not far behind him are the Clanton brothers, Wyatt Earp, and Johnny Ringo. It's time for the gunfight at the OK Corrall...

The Gunfighters is a very difficult story to judge. The series regulars all put in smashing performances - Hartnell in particular having some great moments and lines; his constant renaming of Wyatt Earp to "Mr Werp" is guaranteed to raise a smile, and his reaction to his introduction to the Clanton brothers is simply priceless. The rest of the story is actually fairly enjoyable if a little pedestrian; and boasts some nifty camerawork and ideas, and, for a 1960s television serial, a great set with a great cast inhabiting it. Marred only by the incessant caterwauling of "The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon" at every given opportunity. It's a very different view of how historical events played out, with large portions of the show seemingly lifted from a number of Western films, but it's no less enjoyable for that.

As usual, the DVD version has been cleaned up considerably, and the quality of the presented material is top rate. The DVD also has some great extras, although it is sadly lacking a mute function to save you from the constant high pitched wailing of Lynda Baron singing that wretched ballad.

The End of the Line - An honest, truthful and sometimes uncomfortable documentary about the end of William Hartnell's time as the First Doctor. Fascinating to watch, it's a tale of constantly changing writers and editors, forced cast changes and Bill Hartnell's deteriorating health as ateriosclerosis took a toll. With contributions from Donald Tosh, Maureen O'Brien, Peter Purves and Anneke Wills, "End of the Line" shows just how much of a complete slog it was getting Doctor Who out every week on an almost impossibly long production run.

If you're a strong fan of William Hartnell it can be a tad unsettling to listen to the less than glowing remarks made of his irascibilty due to illness, but happily Maureen O'Brien and Peter Purves share the other side of the original Time Lord, a deeply passionate and caring man who was very protective of the show itself. It also sheds a somewhat harsh, if truthful, light on Vicki and Dodo's departures from Doctor Who and just how much of an impact The Daleks had on the production of the show.

Tomorrow's Times - Mary Tamm adds a great deal of effortless glamour to the First Doctor edition of "Tomorrow's Times", which shows the the brief flirtation the British Press (notably the Daily Mail) had with Daleks and the earlier days of Doctor Who. Very reminiscent of an episode of Points of View in styling, this fun little extra begins the story - already continued on other DVDs for other eras of the show - of the love-hate relationship between journalists and The Doctor and his trusty TARDIS.

Commentary - Toby Hadoke sits in the captain's chair once more; as Peter Purves, Shane Rimmer, David Graham, Richard Beale, and production assistant at the time Tristan de Vere Cole talk us through The Gunfighters. Always fascinating to listen to anecdotes and gems from a production made forty five years ago, this entertaining and useful extra on the DVD serves double duty; as switching on the commentary drowns out a great deal of the Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon.

Photo Gallery - An amazing selection of vintage photographs of the set, cast, and production of The Gunfighters. The photo's have been cleaned up amazingly and there's some glorious views of the whole, from the TARDIS sans lamp to the camera tower erected in the middle of the studio to give some innovative camera angles to the production. Set to the full length version of The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon. Brilliant if you know where the mute button is.

Coming Soon Trailer - The death of Caretaker 345/12 Subsection B informs us that the TARDIS will soon be arriving at Paradise Towers, home of the Kangs, the Rezzies, and Pex (who puts the world of Paradise Towers to rights...). There's something nasty and very hungry in the basement... and on most other floors of the high rise building as well. Can The Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) and Mel (Bonnie Langford) find their way to the swimming pool without being put to a 327 appendix 3 subsection 9 death?

The Gunfighters DVD also has the listings from the Radio Times in PDF format, subtitles available, and the usual production notes are also included.

A great package and well worth watching for some excellent performances and moments of genuinely funny comedy in a competent and well made Who story; if you can get past the singing.

The Awakening

In the second of the 2|Entertain / BBC two disc DVD release EarthStory, the Fifth Doctor, Tegan and Turlough arrive in Little Hodcombe to visit Andrew Verney the local historian - also Tegan's grandfather. However something's affecting the locals and their re-enactment of the local War Games is getting rather too realistic...

The Awakening is a short, punchy story that's a deserved fan favourite in the history of Classic Who. The cast are superb, the locations and sets stunning, and The Malus is one of the most memorable Doctor Who monsters for several reasons; notably because it works so well and it really does look creepy. Everything from the incidental music to the costumes seem to fit together seamlessly, and make a thoroughly enjoyable two part adventure.

Stealing the show are Polly James as Jane, and Keith Jayne as Will Chandler, both of whom work so well in the story. Jane is the single voice of reason before The Doctor arrives, and Will is simply one of the most endearing and innocent supporting characters in Who's long history. And of course, The Awakening does have one of the most iconic monsters on hand in the shape of the Malus - even more remarkable when you consider it was only onscreen for a couple of minutes in total.

The DVD release also has a number of very well thought out and produced extras that seem to exude a warm, happy glow about the story; and as always, sound and vision throughout the DVD are crisp and bright.

Return to Little Hodcombe - A twenty minute look at the area, as Little Hodcombe was a gestalt of three villages, with the director Michael Owen Morris, script editor Eric Saward, and Janet Fielding (Tegan) and Keith Jayne (Will). From the outset of this piece, Morris brings senses of warmth and fondness to proceedings that are hard to ignore. He obviously enjoys his work - both on Doctor Who and his other projects - and it clearly shows.

There's some fun snippets of locals talking about when Doctor Who came to their village, an event that still seems to be a subject of local pride, and Janet Fielding remembers the cast being quite protective of the new director on his first TV work. Keith Jayne discusses Will Chandler, and Eric Saward chimes in on how the story was re-written and whether Will would have made a good addition to the TARDIS crew. A nice sweet old lady tells us about lame horses on set, and her husband tells us how to spot Doctor Who fans on location...

Making the Malus - A fun look at the giant face in the wall, with designer Tony Harding and model-maker Richard Gregory. A short piece on how the Malus was conceived and built, with a rare look behind the face to see how the different parts of the monster were controlled. To finish, there's a short interview with Paul Burrows who bought the Malus at auction and what happens when utilites workmen find giant stone monsters mounted on your living room wall... Another fun and entertaining short, and again, with some warmth and affection for the subject matter leaving you with a very positive feeling.

Commentary - Toby Hadoke once again chairs the commentary team, this time with director Michael Owen Morris and Eric Saward as their share knowledge and opinions of the serial as an audio option on the DVD. Again, Morris' obvious fondness for his work shows through easily and keeps the mood light.

Now & Then - The three villages used as locations in The Awakening are revisited to find that not a lot has changed. There's still thatched cottages and farm buildings, and there's still a ford across the road, even if it is now somewhat waterless... clips and photographs are used effectively, and the linking narration fills in any blanks nicely.

From the Cutting Room Floor - Some extended and deleted scenes from the story, including an appearance by Kamelion. There's also some of the film rushes from the location shoots, and some timecoded VHS sequences that were trimmed.

The Golden Egg Awards - Taken from another BBC1 staple of the time, this excerpt from The Late Late Breakfast Show hosted by Noel Edmonds shows the now infamous outtake featuring a horse, a cart, and a prop lychgate being unexpectedly demolished. Peter Davison is on hand to collect the trophy from Noel Edmonds.

Isolated Music - The Awakening has some excellent incidental music, and this option of the DVD gives you a chance to view the story with the isolated music score. Well worth a listen if you're a fan of the somewhat under-appreciated composers on Classic Doctor Who.

As usual, the DVD also features a photo gallery of production and publicity shots, the Radio Times listings from the story in PDF format, subtitles for those that may need them, and the Production Notes Info Text available to have onscreen as the story plays out.

The Awakening is a great addition to Classic Doctor Who on DVD, and if you're a fan then the EarthStory DVD set is a must-have for your collection.

Torchwood: UK broadcast date still uncertain

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 11:34 PM PDT

With just three weeks until Torchwood: Miracle Day premieres on Starz on 8th July, potential viewers in the UK are still awaiting a date for when the series will air on BBC1(HD).

Speculation over the planned timeslot has raged ever since the Starz announcement in March, and it was hoped by by fans in the UK for a similar Friday 8th July evening premiere - however, the BBC Press Office have now released details for Week 27, and Torchwood has not been scheduled for any time that week.

The confirmation that Miracle Day won't be shown on the same evening as the United States is not unexpected, as this coming Friday sees the new, final series of My Family commencing at 9:00pm on BBC1, followed by a repeat of Miranda at 9:30pm - based on its post-watershed content, the 9:00-10:00pm timeslot seemed most likely for Miracle Day (Children of Earth was in shown at this time for similar reasons).

As the weekly coverage from the BBC only reaches 8th July, it cannot be confirmed quite yet whether the series will commence over the following weekend, as with UKTV in Australia (Saturday 9th, 9:30pm), or at a later date.

SPACE have also yet to confirm their premiere date for Canada.

Classic Books Signing Event

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 06:30 PM PDT

With the re-release of some classic Doctor Who books comes a very special event, a book signing with some very familiar faces from the world of Doctor Who.

Six classic Doctor Who titles, featuring the first three Doctors, will be made available next month after many years of lingering in an "out of print" status.

The titles include: Doctor Who and the Crusaders, Doctor Who and the Daleks, Doctor Who and the Abominable Snowman, Doctor Who and the Cybermen, Doctor Who and the Auton Invasion and Doctor Who and the Cave Monsters.

Each book comes with a new and specially written introduction from popular authors and artists including Russell T Davies, Gareth Roberts and Neil Gaiman.

While neither of those men will be appearing, a raft of special guests has been lined up.

The book signing itself will take place at the Forbidden Planet Megastore located on Shaftsbury Avenue, on Saturday July 16th between 1pm and 2pm. Those lucky enough to get in will get to meet Carol Ann Ford (Susan Foreman), Frazer Hines (Jamie McCrimmon, pictured), Terrance Dicks (who has written so many classic television adventures over Doctor Who's initial 26 year run it would take too long to list them all here!) and Chris Achilleos (fantasy artwork artist).

These books represent an era of Doctor Who, and television itself, before video players, DVD players and online catch up services were available and the only way to see a missed adventure was to read it in print format.

To find out more about this exciting event, visit www.forbiddenplanet.com for more details.

The Not-Romance of Alex & Matt

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 04:18 PM PDT

Whether you like River Song or not, there's no denying that her relationship with the Doctor is quite an unusual one and even a bit intriguing, especially after our suspicions of her relation to Amy and Rory were confirmed at the end of A Good Man Goes To War.

But what is the real relationship between actors Alex Kingston and Matt Smith like?  As it turns out, it's equally, if not more baffling.  And not least because there's a bit of on-set envy going on.  According to Kingston,

"[Matt] gets very jealous, as I get all the best entry and exit lines."

What, you mean "Hello Sweetie?"  Are you suggesting that's better than the Doctor's world-famous "Can I have an apple?" TARDIS-climb-out?  Tsk tsk.

Hold on, it gets better – we all know about the "sexual" chemistry between the Doctor and River even though the former is much, much older than the latter, and it's made even more confusing when you consider that in reality it's the other way around.  Alex (we hope she forgives us if she happens to be reading this) very visibly… er, has more years of life experience under her belt than Matt.  So the stark contrast between their characters' relationship on-camera and their actual relationship off-camera unsurprisingly comes across as a bit… odd:

"Matt's a great flirt. But I feel… I'm going to make myself sound old, but I feel quite motherly towards him."

The man's flirting with someone who feels like she's his mum… that's nice.  Wait, hang on, looks like Alex is changing her mind:

"Maybe not motherly. Actually, I hope he doesn't regard me as a mother.  Older sister, perhaps."

Phew… that makes it so much better.

See Alex Kingston perform live on stage in a two-hour version of Friedrich Schiller's Luise Miller, playing from now until July 30th at the Donmar Warehouse in London.
