| A Good Man Goes to War - Chart Placing Posted: 17 Jun 2011 06:27 AM PDT The final episode of Doctor Who before the summer break, A Good Man Goes to War, just missed out on a top twenty place becoming the 21st most watched programme of the week. The week was dominated by Britain's Got Talent, which was stripped across the week taking 12 of the top twenty places in the chart and helping to give ITV1 the top nineteen programmes. Doctor Who was the second most watched programme on BBC Television just being edged out of top place by The Apprentice which had 40,000 more viewers. The figures do not include those watching on iPlayer, where over 1.2 million people accessed the episode within 7 days of the broadcast, against The Apprentice's 1.0 million. | ||

| 10 Worst Episodes of Doctor Who Posted: 17 Jun 2011 06:05 AM PDT Doctor Who TV guest writer James Wynne counts down the 10 worst standalone Doctor Who episodes since 2005. Note: the list does not include episodes from the Series 6, or any Christmas specials. 10. Gridlock
For the second time since the series revival, the Doctor takes his companion to the distant future on their second adventure. The episode wasn't a memorable one, in fact, I find it hard to remember much about it, even after multiple viewing. That's because the episode as a whole was nothing special. The plot was weak and had some really childish themes – a human and human/cat hybrid produce kittens? I don't think so. The highlight of the episode was the return of the Face of Boe and his message – You are not alone.
| Alt.Fiction Literature Festival Posted: 17 Jun 2011 05:28 AM PDT Alt.fiction and BBC Books present a host of Doctor Who & Torchwood authors at the Alt.Fiction Literature Festival in Derby on the 25th and 26th of June, and Paul Cornell and Rob Shearman are among the guests! | The Trouble with River Song… Posted: 17 Jun 2011 03:17 AM PDT Something is definitely up with River Song. Having recently found out where she came from we still know very little about this enigmatic character. Her parents are Amy and Rory apparently but that still doesn't give us that much to go on. Who is this "best man" that she killed? The Doctor? Rory? We're going to have to wait for some of the answers that will hopefully come later this year. But if you look a little closer at River's life it does appear that someone is out to get her. The same day that her folks take the plunge and get married is the same day that the TARDIS explodes with her inside it and the universe has to be rebooted. Coincidence? Maybe not. We still don't know who the mysterious voice belonged to in The Pandorica Opens claiming that "silence will fall…", it didn't sound like a Silent talking, it was definitely a new player. But who? And what exactly is their goal? Another mysterious element to River is how at the end of The Big Bang did she manage to remember who the Doctor, Amy and Rory were when none of their meetings had happened until Amy remembered? Steven Moffat has gone on record saying that River's story is far from over and we certainly have more to learn. From her very first encounter with the Doctor (from his perspective, in his tenth incarnation) she's certainly survived everything that's been thrown at her and they've certainly remained friends through the years but this year's run of Doctor Who has had her stating that once he finds out who she is, that's when everything will change. So maybe, just maybe they're going to be enemies. What if River, as a young girl has some resentment to the Doctor? There are certainly going to be some tough decisions and circumstances that are going to arise when Doctor Who returns later this year. If River is indeed Melody Pond, then she is being carved into a weapon to fight the Doctor and if Melody is meant to be the little girl that we saw regenerating at the end of Day of the Moon it could possibly turn her a little funny. A human with Time Lord DNA has never really existed (Donna and Jenny do not count, let's nip that in the bud) and one that has regenerated, all that power pouring through her body and mind could certainly have a massive effect. The girl could even have a madness to equal the Master's. If River is a danger, it would make sense that she would gather a few enemies over the course of her travels, enemies that would want her out of the way. If we accept the fact that she is the little girl that we saw regenerating then we know that she was guided by the Silence for a number of years but what exactly did they want with her? Could they be tracking her so that they could get to the Doctor or could it be that the squad who made their base on Demon's Run? Controlling River just so that they could get to the Doctor? Answers are coming, but until then all we can do is speculate… | ||

| Questions Over “Experience” Funding Posted: 16 Jun 2011 08:48 PM PDT A storm in a teacup is brewing in South Wales – or it will be if Wales Online have their way! It seems right now that there is a concerted anti-Doctor Who vibe echoing around the mainstream media, with this latest piece from the Mirror Group-owned website which supposedly services the interests of Cardiff and South Wales criticising what is – comparatively speaking – a small amount of money concerning the migration of the Doctor Who Experience from Earl's Court in London to a site in Wales. The regional website is reporting that over £50,000 of tax payers money is being used to take the project forward and establish "commercial agreement" with BBC Worldwide. According to a Council spokesman:
In Kasterborous' long experience of local government, £50,000 is a drop in the ocean. The figures in the quote above speak for themselves. Exactly why is this being made into an issue, given the massive benefits that the even will bring to South Wales?

| Squirrels Conquer and Destroy! Posted: 16 Jun 2011 07:34 PM PDT I fear that in years to come this image will replace the Rorschach Test. On the one hand one possible reaction to it would be of complete and total love. Clicking into the Metro the viewer would email it, Google it, slide it into picture frames in front of snaps of their children and celebrate in the unbridled joy of cute little animals doing cute little things. On the other (more likely to be bitten) hand, it's an image generating enough hatred to make others put aside the misery in the world like Syrian refugees forced to flee from the Assad regime or the violent protests in Greece following the slump in the markets and force the populace to thrust their arms aloft and just yell: "What's going on!" Fear a mass outbreak of Marvin Gaye-isms and rejoice in the great dividing rode that is: a Dalek Shaped Bird Feeder Being Worn By A Squirrel. Look at it. What's going on? It's just a toy on a string filled with nuts being molested by a hungry Squirrel! I'd be more impressed if the Squirrel took the helmet off and said: 'Well actually I prefer Sapphire & Steel' or got a little stool out and started reading a passage from his collected works of poetry entitled An Ode to Nuts. Want to hear the story behind the picture? Its 'creator' Chris Balcombe even admits he just used a Dalek because he wanted to clear his shelves of his old sci-fi junk. Hats off to him for recycling in an innovative way but is this really a news item or just a picture that speaks about 182 words rather than the customary thousand – with about 170 of those devoted to some 'hilarious' Squirrel-Dalek hybrid gag's from the unfortunate Work Experience Ganger who got given this to jam into a word sandwich. Its enough to make you go nuts… | ||
