Gaiman to Novelize Doctor's Wife?

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 07:42 AM PDT

Here's great news for fans of the Series 6 episode The Doctor's Wife – Neil Gaiman has spoken about the possibility of novelizing the story in the past, and thanks to a recent "annual thought leadership symposium" sponsored by the Financial Times and Jaguar, we now know that this is something he is discussing with the BBC!

Apparently the event was "an invitation only annual ideas conference held in New York, designed to bring together the key players and thinkers across politics, business, media, culture, academia and technology to discuss and debate what individuality in a mass age means" – but more importantly and with more relevance to Doctor Who fans, the topic apparently arose in an interview with Neil Gaiman by John Hodgman.

Pretty cool, huh?

It will certainly make a great addition to any collection of Doctor Who books, and perhaps even kickstart the range of nuWho adaptations that we have all been waiting for!

More eBay Audios!

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 06:24 AM PDT

We're continuing our sale of Doctor Who audiobooks this week, with the following titles coming to a close on eBay this Saturday, June 25th at around 8pm…

Each of the following items has a start price of just 99p!

The War Games

Doctor Who - The War GamesDavid Troughton (who guest starred in 1972′s The Curse of Peladon and 2008′s Midnight, and whose father, Patrick, starred as the Doctor Who in The War Games) reads this thrilling novelisation of a classic Doctor Who adventure.  Mud, barbed wire, the smell of death…The year is 1917 and the TARDIS has materialised on the Western Front during the First World War. Or has it? For very soon the Doctor finds himself pursued by the soldiers of Ancient Rome; and, then he and his companions are reliving the American Civil War of 1863.

And is this really Earth, or just a mock-up created by the War Lords?  As Doctor Who solves the mystery, he has to admit he is faced with an evil of such magnitude that he cannot combat it on his own – he has to call for the help of his own people, the Time Lords. So, for the first time, it is revealed who is Doctor Who – a maverick Time Lord who 'borrowed' the TARDIS without permission. By appealing to the Time Lords he gives away his position in Time and Space. Thus comes about the Trial of Doctor Who…

David Troughton reads Malcolm Hulke's complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1979.

Ghost Light

Doctor Who - Ghost LightThis new release from AudioGO features Ian Hogg (Josiah Smith in the televised version) reading Marc Platt's Ghost Light.  In this exciting reading of a Doctor Who novelisation first published by Target Books in 1990, the Seventh Doctor and his companion Ace explore an imposing Victorian mansion to discover the terrible secret that the house conceals…

A gloomy, decaying mansion, a mysterious fire, and a reclusive 19th century naturalist with blasphemous theories are the sinister elements to be found in Ghost Light an unabridged reading of Marc Platt's classic Doctor Who adventure. Who – or what – is Josiah Smith? What terrible secret does his house conceal? And, as the Doctor and Ace venture from the Tardis to explore the mansion, why does Ace find everything so frighteningly familiar?

This thrilling tale of mystery and danger read by Ian Hogg, who played the naturalist Josiah Smith in the original Doctor Who TV serial, is accompanied by atmospheric music and sound effects to enhance the whole chilling experience.

Torchwood: Web of Lies App

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 05:06 AM PDT

BBC Worldwide and Starz announced today the production of an interactive app tied to Torchwood: Miracle Day. The app, titled Torchwood: Web of Lies, will feature 10, three-minute motion comic narratives providing clues to Torchwood: Miracle Day. The app and first motion comic narrative will be available for download on iTunes prior to the premiere of Torchwood: Miracle Day – produced by BBC Worldwide Productions, airing this summer in the UK on BBC One and in the U.S. on Starz.  Additional narratives and games will be available for download following each week's broadcast transmission.

Torchwood: Web of Lies is an episodic interactive experience for iOS that fuses together motion comic and gameplay elements to tell an original and digitally exclusive Torchwood story.  Players will participate in a parallel storyline to Torchwood: Miracle Day that includes lead characters Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper – voiced by John Barrowman and Eve Myles.

Torchwood: Web of Lies runs alongside weekly premieres of Torchwood: Miracle Day, providing fans with a way to engage in the world of Torchwood between episodes.  It reveals a past day in the lives of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper – a day they've both forgotten.  The events of that day fuel a modern day conspiracy-laced treasure hunt, as Holly Mokri, voiced by Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Buffy The Vampire Slayer), labors to uncover the secrets of Miracle Day. Each week a new episode unlocks, allowing players to access another piece of original motion comic narrative and game which ties into and extends plot developments of the show, as well as providing new twists in its own narrative.

The first narrative and game will be released promotionally and the remaining nine can be purchased inside the app in packs of three, each for 59p.  A special bundle for all 10 narratives and game can be purchased for £1.79

Developed by BBC Worldwide Productions and BBC Worldwide Digital Entertainment and Games, Torchwood: Web of Lies is written by Torchwood: Miracle Day writers Jane Espenson and Ryan Scott. The motion comic and app is published by BBC Worldwide, with Double Barrel (Tron: Legacy) producing the motion comic and Powerful Robot (Green Lantern) producing the app.

Torchwood: Miracle Day - Welsh Preview

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 01:10 AM PDT

After the blaze of publicity in London for Monday's preview of episode one of Torchwood: Miracle Day, another, lower key preview took place in Wales last night as cast and crew gathered to watch in Swansea, where UK filming took place earlier in the year.

The preview took place at the Branwyn Hall (seen itself in the previous series, Children of Earth), and as with London the principal cast and crew were available to speak to the press, with an emphasis upon the show's Welsh roots.

Russell T Davies, who was born in the city, told the South Wales Evening Post:
I don't come as often as I should, but it is lovely to be back. Torchwood has such a Welsh heritage, we wanted to bring it here to show it off and repay the city really.

One of the first scenes in the first episode is at the (white National Trust) house in Rhossili. I spent my life wondering what it was like inside and I never thought we would get it, but lo and behold we managed it. It was a joy to film there and it looks epic and huge.

It is an exciting adventure to be in Los Angeles and America at my age (48) but you will always come home to Swansea.
Speaking to the Western Mail, he added:
There is a fair bit of swagger in Miracle Day. We go to Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington as well as Wales. Of course, being in America meant more money, more production value, bigger explosions, but it was also very important to recognise Wales. If we had just shot it out there it would not have been believable.

It is a Welsh show with Welsh characters, that is very important and is part of the reason why it works. The story starts in Wales, the middle is in America and it ends in Wales.

Eve Myles said:
We had the premiere in London on Monday, which was lovely, but this is the one I am really excited about.

It was unbelievable to film at Rhossili, it was wonderful. I had always wanted to live at that house and the beach is where I walk my dog, so it was unbelievable to blow it up!

It is one of the most important things on the whole show, a huge element of it is Welsh, the show will always have a link to Wales."

BBC Wales have released a video with Bill Pullman at the event, talking about his character.

Russell T Davies also featured on BBC Radio 4's Front Row last night, chatting to presenter Mark Lawson about taking Torchwood from the UK into the US, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and on other topics like the austerity measures within the BBC, the importance of the watershed, and his enthusiasm for his next writing project.

Having talked about what would happen with The Sarah Jane Adventures, discussion then turned towards the audience that would watch Torchwood, and that though it isn't aimed for children some would still watch it through its Doctor Who/Captain Jack connection. Davies commented:
You have to be quite careful with it, more careful than you'd normally would be, because now obviously Torchwood goes out at 9 o'clock, and we've got it coming up on BBC1 now, but we've never had Captain Jack swear because he's loved by children, and children will come to watch it. So we don't tone Torchwood down as such, there's still strong meat and there's some great visuals and some great gore in this show - and, you know, Captain Jack freely has an open and honest and wonderful sex life, but that's fine - it's just the harsher elements, the swearing and his actions as well - I don't think you're ever going to see Captain Jack stab someone brutally or something like that because he's a children's hero.
Talking about the co-production deal, he said:
The move to America partly coincided with the success of the last series of Torchwood which has allowed us to get co-production money. This new series of Torchwood is in conjunction with Starz, who are a premium cable network over there, so they brought a level of funding that we wouldn't have got from the BBC. I have to say if we hadn't, we could still have made this series. But you know, this co-production stuff is nothing new, you haven't seen a Dickens drama made for about 25 years that didn't have money from Boston in it or something, so this is the way of the world now, co-production money is natural.

Stephen Gallagher @ Vworp 4!

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 10:35 PM PDT

We're just a few days away from the Vworp 4 event at Manchester pub The Lass O'Gowrie, where it has been announced that 80s writer Stephen Gallagher will be appearing on July 3rd alongside a whole host of classic Doctor Who personnel and some faces from DWM!

After lots of cajoling and persuading, Salford's own Who scripter of 80′s faves Warriors Gate and Terminus Stephen Gallagher has agreed to join us for the day. We're very chuffed, as Steve hasn't done a con for donkeys years and has a lot to chat about!

As previously announced, Steve joins Katy Manning, Donald Tosh, Bob Baker, Paul Tams, Dez Skinn, Adrian Salmon, Andrew Cartmel, Ben Aaronovich, Peter Ware and the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre!

If you haven't attended a Vworp event before, the setup is very simple: it takes place in an old-fashioned pub, kitted out with a big screen and with the guests talking about their favourite 6 things from Doctor Who. It's a great concept, simply executed, and over the yars names such as Graeme Harper and Terrance Dicks have lent their support to the event. With people such as Katy Manning (former companion Jo Grant) and K9 creator Bob Baker on hand, not to mention 1960s script editor Donald Tosh, this is a superb lineup that is definitely worth spending 12 hours in a pub for!

Tickets cost £19.95 and are available from www.wegottickets.com/event/116912.

Food and drink is available, with a top quality, award winning menu to choose from. If you're really lucky you might even get to chat with some of the Kasterborous team over a pint of mild!

More info on LassFest, which has tons of goodies in as part of the Pubcon is available at www.lassfest.co.uk

The Nephew's PodKast

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 06:19 PM PDT

This week's Kasterborous PodKast (with a K) features Christian Cawley, James McLean and Brian A Terranova discussing matters as disparate as the original design for Nephew in Neil Gaiman's The Doctor's Wife, whether or not the Paul McGann-starring TV Movie from 1996 has dated badly, and just what Danny Cohen thought he was playing at with his recent discussion about Doctor Who at the Church and Media conference.

Here are a few quotes. On the matter of the TV Movie:

"It did feel as though there were bits of The X Files in there but that the script and the tone of the show hadn't actually caught up with where The X Files was at that time."

On the original design for Nephew:

"The Nephew design is pretty stunning… they were having their lives augmented by House… it's understandable that the Ood might not have that, and I think that design would have much more suited the story."

The recent statements by BBC One Controller Danny Cohen concerning Doctor Who Series 7:

"I think the whole…caboodle needs to be more responsive to the situation. Knocking it aside and saying "you've got to have faith" doesn't help the issue… I don't think using Twitter helps."

As always, if you don't have time to listen right away, you can also subscribe to the RSS feed or pick up the podKast in iTunes, where we would be ever so grateful if you could leave us some feedback, perhaps a rating or a review if you have the time!

Action #902 and Russian Hamilton

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 05:10 PM PDT

The second issue of the finale to Action Comics is in your comics shops today. You can check out the first few pages (and see the alternate cover) here.

Meanwhile, if there are any Russian speakers amongst you, you may be pleased to learn that the new issue of Esli magazine (here's their website), #6 of the 2011 volume, features a translation of my Jonathan Hamilton story 'One of Our Bastards is Missing', which they're retitled 'Extinct Prussian'. I share the issue with stories by Mike Resnick amongst others, including one by Eugene Mirabello that I appreciated a great deal in its English version, so it seems I'm in good company.

Here's the cover:

And they have a rather lovely metaphorical illustration for my story inside.

As you might realise, I'm rather in love with all this. It's the sort of thing I imagined might happen when I became an SF writer, and now it has. Cheerio!
