| Torchwood: Web of Lies - update (iOS only) Posted: 21 Jun 2011 10:11 AM PDT BBC Worldwide and Starz have released new details on the tie-in "motion comic" Torchwood: Web of Lies, which has been revealed to consist of a series of ten, three minute interactive narratives that will offer clues to the mysteries conjured up in Miracle Day. It has been written by Jane Espenson and Ryan Scott, and has been developed by Double Barrel Motion Labs for BBC Worldwide Productions and BBC Worldwide Digital Entertainment and Games. However, the series will only be released through an application designed for the Apple-based iOS operating system, available through iTunes. The press release provides details on how Web of Lies fits in with Miracle Day: Torchwood: Web of Lies is an episodic interactive experience for iOS that fuses together motion comic and gameplay elements to tell an original and digitally exclusive Torchwood story. Players will participate in a parallel storyline to Torchwood: Miracle Day that includes lead characters Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper – voiced by John Barrowman and Eve Myles. Torchwood: Web of Lies runs alongside weekly premieres of Torchwood: Miracle Day, providing fans with a way to engage in the world of Torchwood between episodes. It reveals a past day in the lives of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper - a day they've both forgotten. The events of that day fuel a modern day conspiracy-laced treasure hunt, as Holly Mokri, voiced by Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Tru Calling, Buffy The Vampire Slayer), labours to uncover the secrets of Miracle Day. Each week a new episode unlocks, allowing players to access another piece of original motion comic narrative and game which ties into and extends plot developments of the show, as well as providing new twists in its own narrative. The first narrative and game will be released promotionally and the remaining nine can be purchased inside the app in packs of three, each for $0.99. A special bundle for all 10 narratives and game can be purchased for $2.99 No information has been forthcoming as to whether fans of Torchwood using other operating systems will also be able to access the complimentary material featured in Web of Lies. | ||

| Posted: 21 Jun 2011 08:51 AM PDT Over the years, Doctor Who has produced hundreds of hours of quality television pouring through TV signals and into our living rooms where we've been constantly amazed by this wonderful show. But as with all TV shows, some ideas never made it to production and other ideas headed out into other formats such as spin-offs and movies which ultimately never saw the light of day. The good people at Den of Geek have therefore decided to compile a list of said ideas that never were. Fill your head with possibilities and visit strange alternate universes where a third Peter Cushing Dalek movie was made from an adaptation of the 1965 television story The Chase. Wonder a the possibility of what may have happened if Terry Nation's Dalek spin-off for the USA, The Destroyers, had managed to be adapted for television rather than languishing for forty-odd years before Big Finish decided to step in. A whole host of other ideas are talked about as well. Doctor Who Meets Scratchman, the movie idea that was written by Tom Baker and an Ian Marter when they were starring in the show, the aborted series twenty three and twenty seven, the Doctor Who cartoon, the aborted 30th anniversary episode The Dark Dimension, the American remake (that would have surely ruined the show entirely!) and a bunch of ideas from the Russell T Davies era (that's already "an era" now!) that never made it into the light of day. Head over to Den of Geek to get the full lowdown. | ||

"We all mourned the passing of Elisabeth Sladen, which is still a shock to me, and also the passing of the programme," he said. "I loved [...]
| The Reign of Terror - animation update Posted: 21 Jun 2011 07:31 AM PDT Theta-Sigma, animation partners with Big Finish for the recreation of missing episodes in 2|Entertain's The Reign of Terror DVD release, have provided an update on how the project is progressing:We are now two days into production. After a fantastic preproduction period, images are pouring out of the studio. Meticulous research has been done, even involving the help of Paris University's Archaeology Department to get some of the period features, which do not appear in the extant episodes, correct. 3D models of every set used have been built as guides for our artists. Model sheets of the main characters and key backgrounds are now being painted. There's a fantastic buzz surrounding the project. Every member of the team is focused on getting detail and accuracy to the highest possible level. The company have also sent a copy of a promotional poster created for 2|Entertain's ClassicDW Twitter account.(with thanks to Austen Atkinson, Theta-Sigma) | ||

| Posted: 21 Jun 2011 06:09 AM PDT If democracy has taught us anything it's that DEMOCRACY DOESN'T WORK. However there's no need to be downhearted about nothing being equal and nobody having the right to express their opinion when you can deny the general unfairness by voting for the Greatest Doctor Who Companion of All Time. Ranker are hosting an incredibly subjective list of who's who in Who and unsurprisingly its dominated by the Nu-Who series'. Coming in at number one is Amy Pond with 90% of voters listing her in their own top ten followed by Captain Jack Harkness and Donna Noble. Notable absentees are The Brigadier, Sgt Benton and Dr. Harry Sullivan while you may wish to reserve your outrage for the inclusion of Jenny, Madame de Pompadour and Lady Christiana De Souza positioned at twelve, seventeenth and twentieth respectively. But don't despair – you can counter-vote anyone's decision! If only elections worked that way there'd be no Cameron and Kamelion would be Prime Minister! Ho hum… | ||

| It's Still the Same Old Torchwood! Posted: 21 Jun 2011 04:45 AM PDT With Torchwood: Miracle Day only a matter of weeks away, speculation is starting to rise about whether the show that we eventually get to see will be familiar old Torchwood or a whole new creature altogether. Whilst it is important for the show to not abandon its roots or for it to forget where it came from, it's important that it evolves with the times and is accessible for a wide audience to enjoy – surely that's the only way that we'll get more Torchwood! Speaking to the BBC, Torchwood creator and writer Russell T Davies has talked about how even though the new series of Torchwood travels the globe akin to a Bond movie, it won't forget its Welsh roots or the fact that it is still a spinoff of Doctor Who. During the screening of Episode 1 at the BFI in London, Davies told the BBC that:
John "Captain Jack" Barrowman also promised that the show will be a must-see for all Torchwood fans:
The newest series of Torchwood looks to be the best one yet, full of exciting action sequences, solid acting and exotic locations. Torchwood airs on Starz from next week on July 8th, and will air in the UK probably sometime later in July.

| Torchwood: Miracle Day Preview Screening Posted: 21 Jun 2011 01:40 AM PDT As one of a privileged few to have enjoyed the BFI's preview screening of Episode One of Torchwood: Miracle Day on London's South Bank on Monday evening, I'm pleased to be able to report an overwhelmingly positive response, both personally and from the packed auditorium. The event comprised a screening of the episode plus a fairly extensive preview of the rest of the series, followed by a lively Q&A session featuring Russell T Davies, John Barrowman, Eve Myles and Bill Pullman, all of who were on fine form. This session was hosted by journalist James Rampton and included some questions from the audience. It is probably important to reassure fans that Miracle Day is still eminently recognisable as Torchwood right from its opening scenes, with the series' tone and sense of humour all intact. The full range of emotions — from the dark and visceral to the playful and sexually charged — that sum to make Torchwood what it is are all in evidence. Bill Pullman went on to cite this range as well as the humanity and truthfulness within the writing as the reason he snapped up his role within two days of receiving the script. Gwen and Rhys have some great character moments as ever — including one for Gwen in Episode One that had the audience erupt with spontaneous applause — but the new characters more than make their mark too, with Mekhi Phifer's CIA Agent Rex Matheson getting many of the best lines and hence the biggest laughs from the appreciative fans. The main difference is in the scale of the production, which certainly feels bigger but in a way that very much suits the story Miracle Day is setting out to tell. This is a Torchwood that has evolved yet further from Children of Earth, but whilst it takes a little time to introduce its history for the uninitiated, Davies' script achieves this with a deft lightness of touch and as an integral part of the story such that Miracle Day never feels like anything but a continuation of what has gone before. I will of course steer clear of spoilers beyond a mention for the well-documented series premise that people can no longer die, no matter how sick or badly injured they are. It is clear from the opening instalment that a lot of consideration has been given to the effects upon society that such a fundamental change to the human condition would have, and Davies indicated in the Q&A session that the series will explore the concept over a timeline that stretches for ten months. Miracle Day is clearly also set to explore new ground for its lead characters too, with Davies also mentioning that he wrote Episode Seven as a "gift" to John Barrowman and Eve Myles, teasing that it explores what Captain Jack and Gwen truly mean to one another. Davies also talked of possible futures for the series in terms that implied his potential continued involvement, although this was not addressed directly. For now, though, one thing is certain: Torchwood is better shape than ever and in Miracle Day we are set for our most intense ride yet. I can't wait. http://fourthhorsemanpress.com/Chamberlain/ | ||
| Torchwood: Miracle Day - UK Preview Posted: 21 Jun 2011 12:37 AM PDT Last night saw the first episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day - The New World - receive its UK premiere at the British Film Institute; cast and crew were in attendance for the screening in front of both press and fans. The screening was followed by an Q&A with its stars John Barrowman, Eve Myles, and Bill Pullman, and writer/executive producer Russell T Davies; other members of the cast and crew were present in the audience, including Kai Owen, Tom Price, executive producer Julie Gardner and director of episode one, Bharat Nalluri. Avoiding spoilers for what comes up later in the series, the guests focused upon their many anecdotes from the shoot, with Barrowman and Myles discussing the excitement of making the show at Warner Bros - not to mention the pranks the former likes to pull! - and Pullman commenting on what it was like to work with his Welsh co-stars on the project. When asked about if the show could become fully "American" in later (potential!) series, Davies indicated that he'd want Torchwood to remain Welsh at its heart. Highlights from the Q&A are expected to be available to watch on the BFI website from next week. Prior to the screening, the press were able to chat to the stars about the show, and the BBC have published an article including a video interview featuring Barrowman, Myles, Pullman and Davies discussing their thoughts on making a new, co-funded series in America. Bill Pullman appeared on BBC's Breakfast this morning, discussing the development (and name!) of his character, and also on what he thought of Russell T Davies: I wasn't expecting - I'm thinking prototypical Welsh like Anthony Hopkins or Richard Burton, dark, moody - but he's bright, just such a passion, he is such a generous spirit, and very special to everybody that works with him. He has really, now, quite a following in the States - he and Julie Gardner run a very professional operation.Davies himself can be heard discussing how he took the show from Wales to Los Angeles tonight on Front Row (BBC Radio 4) from 7:15pm. | ||

| Posted: 20 Jun 2011 07:49 PM PDT Holy greasing the wheels! Matt Smith, that diabolical doctoring fiend has jumped ship and landed stateside to perform for a huddle of Hollywood execs playing none other than the caped crusader! Treading tinsel town's boards Smith performed as part of 24 Hour Plays, an event where each play is written the night before, rehearsed for one day, then performed in front filmmakers and VIP's of varying levels of I. Smith – starring in"Gotham Autopsy" – first appeared covered in a mortuary sheet before bounding to life as a confused crusader alongside Nick Swanson (Don't Mess With the Zohan) as Robin. Delighting the crowds twenty minutes in Smith dropped his American accent and broke out into a Dick Van Dyke Coc-ker-ney accent. Smith and his current squeeze Brit Supermodel Daisy Lowe were also spotted by snoopy onlookers as they charmed the press gather on the red carpet and partied at a Santa Monica studio. Smith recently gave an interview declaring his intentions of cracking America and as long as he keeps taking idiosyncratic routes then he'll become the hero Hollywood deserves. But not the one it needs right now. And so we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent gaurdian. A watchful protector. A dark knight… A Doctor. | ||
| Posted: 20 Jun 2011 06:37 PM PDT The hardcover of Fort Freak, the twenty-first volume in George R.R. Martin's Wild Cards series, is out today, and I've got a story in it! Wild Cards is a shared super hero universe, a world where certain individuals drew the genetic card for super powers (they're known as Aces) and certain individuals... weren't so lucky (they're called Jokers). It continues in real time, starting in 1987 with the release of the original Wild Cards anthology, with this year's stories being set this year. George edits the volumes himself (with Melinda Snodgrass), fitting stories into an arc plot within each book, and I was delighted when this time round he approached me to contribute. Fort Freak is the story of the cops and crooks of the 5th Precinct of the NYPD, the Jokertown precinct, where the issue is law enforcement in a super powered ghetto. But it's not all doom and gloom: Jokertown is the location of a historic theatre, and that's where my new character, Abigail, is working on her performing arts degree. It's where she'll discover something about herself, and where she begins a relationship with one of the series' most popular and beloved characters. With quite a lot of being arrested and public nudity. As well as George and Melinda, the other contributors to Fort Freak are Stephen Leigh, John Jos. Miller, Kevin Andrew Murphy, Victor Milan, Cherie Priest, David Anthony Durham, Mary Anne Mohanraj and Ty Franck. It's a great combination of police procedural, murder mystery and super powered action. You can find George talking about it here. You can read Melinda's story about her rookie cop Francis Xavier Black on his first patrol in Jokertown, 'The Rook', here. (Abigail pops up briefly.) And Cherie Priest, who wrote the arc plot for Fort Freak, has a sample from it online here. It's great to be part of such a talented team, and to have our stories weave together. Do go find a copy. Until tomorrow, then, Cheerio! |
