The Scarifyers: The Magic Circle - Cover and Details

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 05:22 PM PDT

Cosmic Hobo Productions have sent DWO the cover and details for their forthcoming Scarifyers adventure; The Magic Circle, which features Classic Series 'Davros' actor Terry Molloy.

The Scarifyers: The Magic Circle

Professor Dunning (Terry Molloy) is finding the business of single-handedly saving Great Britain from the forces of darkness rather taxing.

And Lionheart? Lionheart is missing.

When the only clue to his disappearance seems to lie in a twenty-year-old murder investigation, Dunning turns to the one man who might have the answers: Lionheart’s erstwhile colleague Harry ‘Thumper’ Crow (David Warner).

Harry doesn’t hold with supernaturalism, but over the next few days he’s going to see some very strange things indeed: a string of murdered magicians, a dead music-hall star come back to life, and a pensioner from the depths of hell.

Can Crow and Dunning find Lionheart? A terrible truth awaits, as they unearth the long-buried secrets of The Magic Circle.

This is the sixth adventure of The Scarifyers.

About The Scarifyers:

The Scarifyers began life in 2006 with The Nazad Conspiracy, uniting 1930s ghost story writer Professor Dunning (Terry Molloy) with Detective Inspector Lionheart (Nicholas Courtney), as they battled the vengeful spirit of Rasputin. In The Devil of Denge Marsh, Lionheart left the force to set up top-secret government department MI-13, and rescue Dunning from an evil cult and a giant squid. For King and Country saw our heroes save King George VI from an irate resurrected Oliver Cromwell; in The Curse of the Black Comet they travelled to Egypt in the company of Brian Blessed, and in The Secret Weapon of Doom they searched for the titular secret weapon, aided by Nigel Havers and Leslie Phillips.

BBC 7 (now Radio 4 Extra) picked up The Scarifyers in 2007, and has continued to broadcast the series ever since. The Radio Times called them ‘rollicking good fun.’

In 2011, Nicholas Courtney – Inspector Lionheart in The Scarifyers - passed away. The Magic Circle introduces a new lead character, played by David Warner, and serves as a farewell to both Lionheart and to the actor who played him.

Available from www.cosmichobo.com or all good bookshops. For further information, e-mail simon@cosmichobo.com.

+ The Scarifyers: The Magic Circle is released on 1st November 2011, priced &ound;11.99.

Hypable Interview with Doctor Who Director Peter Hoar

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 05:10 PM PDT

Fandom features website Hypable have been in touch regarding their latest interview with Doctor Who Director, Peter Hoar.

Nicholas Myers (NM) - Now that Doctor Who has been renewed for another series, would you like to return as to direct another episode? Have you been asked already?

Peter Hoar (PH) – I haven’t been asked as yet but wouldn’t turn down a great offer!

NM – How much did you know about River in order to gauge a feel for how best to deliver the ending? Did Steven inform you of anything prior to filming that we don’t know?

PH – Steven tells us only what’s in the script. I had no idea for example of the recent developments in ‘Let’s Kill Hitler’. And that’s the truth!

NM – This episode featured quite a cliff-hanger. What is your all-time favourite Doctor Who cliff-hanger?

PH – Sarah Jane being left behind at the end of Hand of Fear or Tegan being left behind at the end of Time Flight.. Maybe there’s a pattern here…

Colin Baker's Honourary DWAS Role

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 04:38 PM PDT

On Sunday 4th September, in front of a packed Riverside Studios, Colin Baker (The 6th Doctor), proudly accepted the post of Honorary President of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society.

His surprise appearance at the "Day of the Daleks" convention held in Hammersmith, London followed a poll amongst DWAS members where he received more votes than all the other candidates combined. The post had been vacant since the death earlier this year of Nicholas Courtney, who had previously been the incumbent since 1997.

Colin received a rapturous reception from the audience, and was genuinely taken aback by both the title that was bestowed and also the response from those present.

Colin said: "I feel humble and truly delighted. To follow Jon Pertwee and Nicholas Courtney is a great honour. I am abashed and very grateful."

TARDIS Dress
Dragon*Con 2011 featured a number of Doctor Who costumes some of which can be studied on the Geeks of Doom Website.

Amongst the Daleks, Doctors and assorted villains parading through the streets of Atlanta was this version of the TARDIS. Created by Kelldar, the inspiration for the dress came after getting an incorrect shade of blue fabric for a Marie Antoinette dress she wanted to make.

Meanwhile across the nation at the Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, tens of thousands of participants gathered to create Black Rock City, dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. Part of the Festival is the presence of hundreds of art cars or mutant vehicles gliding through the desert including, this year, a rather large DALEK.

Doctor Who TARDIS Journal

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 01:11 AM PDT

Did you ever want a Doctor to give you his very own, handcrafted TARDIS journal to log your inner most thoughts in up until the day when you first actually met him?

Doctor Who - River's journalWell you're not alone.

Entertainment Earth have released this Doctor Who TARDIS Journal modelled on the same one we saw the Eleventh Doctor hand to River Song at the end of last weeks episode Let's Kill Hitler (he could have left her a matching pen as well…sheesh.)

It may look like a TARDIS and does in fact allow you to document your travels through time and space it won't make last Thursdays trip to Auntie Sally's anymore interesting.

It might however inspire some new authors which is a very TARDIS thing indeed.

While it has the potential to be choc-a-bloc with personal 'spoilers' the Entertainment Earth site stubbornly refuses to answer such diary related ones as: Does it start with April and work backwards? Are the pages bigger on the inside? Do you push it to open it?

Who knows? Unless you part with $9.99 to find out… the Doctor Who TARDIS Journal is available to pre-order now for release in October 2011.

What's the Moff Watching?

Posted: 04 Sep 2011 05:18 PM PDT

If you're Whovian enough to read news blogs like Kasterborous, chances are you're also Whovian enough to occasionally trawl through the internet's quality video streaming websites, and YouTube, to see what brilliant (or sometimes not-so-brilliant) Who-related audiovisual creations the fandom has to offer.  Therefore you'll no doubt be aware that 97.3% of the time, said creations end up looking something like this:

Certainly not bad, but definitely not something that hasn't been done before. However, that fact isn't stopping Doctor Who's fearless leader Steven Moffat from sending some quick praise in the direction of YouTube user frabjousfilms via Twitter.  After watching the above humansong, the Grand Moff linked to it with three words of internet birdsong: "Made my day!"

No doubt Steven's delight had something to do with the number of Moff-isms found in the video:

  • Wibbly wobbly
  • Timey-wimey
  • Geronimo
  • "I wear fezzes now. Fezzes are cool."
  • The physical fez itself (paper? really?)
  • "Always bring a banana to a party."
  • The Moff-era theme tune

Video creator Dan Rider evidently realized that he'd just been given the thumbs-up from the Big Man himself (possibly due to what was likely an extreme increase in video traffic), and wrote Sir Moffat a reply in the video's description:

"Wow! Thanks to everybody for your lovely, lovely comments! Thanks especially to you, Steven Moffat- you make my day EVERY day. (Incidentally, if there's ever an episode where the Doctor fights an alien who sings in four-part harmony, hit me up! I'm an actor!)"

Best of luck with that, Dan – but if you're going to be on Doctor Who, you need to get a real bow tie.
