Posted: 04 Sep 2011 02:49 AM PDT It was the wedding to end all weddings. Or it will be…. it might be? It's always so hard to tell when Gallifreyans tie the knot. This one however proved (will prove? – Ed) more complicated than most given the trans regenerational issues involved. As per ancient Gallifreyan custom the wedding of Presidents (current, past or otherwise) of the High Council of Time Lords is required to be an Affair of State. And no-one does does Affairs of State better than the Time Lords. The road to matrimony has not been easy for the Doctor. Special permissions had to be sought from the Celestial Intervention Agency to allow for multiple versions of him to be placed on the guest list, a consequence of him being the 407th, 409th, 411th and 415th President of the High Council. Further complications arose when current President Rassilon refused to oversee the ceremony. When asked for a comment on the matter he had this to say "I'm not having anything to do with this. He tried to shoot me and then exiled me back into the Time War! I'd sooner crush the spikey haired interloper than see him wed! Gallifrey Rises!!!" Rassilon's refusal to conduct the ceremony meant the happy couple had to call on the services of the prior President, the Lady Romana. At first it seemed as if her unhappy marriage to the fourth regeneration of the groom might stand in the way of her participating, thankfully last minute talks between her and the 407th President of the High Council cleared the air. Giving an impromptu press conference outside the TARDIS afterwards, dressed only in a large white shirt and an overlong scarf, President Romana claimed she was thrilled to play her part in proceedings. Several members of the High Council of Time Lords have been quite vocal in their objection to the Doctor's marriage. This reporter spoke at length to a member of the Council who has asked not to be named.
However, one of the privileges of having been President so often is the ability to brush little things like temporal incest out of the way using the Broom of Rassilon. Once all the red tape was disposed of the wedding itself nearly went off without a hitch, the only slight hiccup being when a curly haired earth woman wearing a leather cat suit burst into the hall just as President Romana was asking "if any Time Lord has any reason why these two cannot be wed, speak now or forever hold your peace". Her objection was hastily withdrawn and she ran from the hall muttering something about being too early. Time Lords all over the universe held their breath as they watched the Father of the Bride hand over his daughter to her new husband, after all many of them speculated that the Blinovitch Limitation Effect might have prevented this from happening. All the guests were in good spirits afterwards, especially Jamie McCrimmon who was now able to relax after executing his duty as Best Man. He was seen talking to various woman at different points of the evening, all of them ginger. Which one joined him back in his room after the reception remains a mystery for another day.

Let's Kill Hitler: Australian ratings Posted: 04 Sep 2011 12:18 AM PDT Let's Kill Hitler has debuted in Australia to excellent ratings. TV Tonight reports that the episode averaged 792,000 viewers in the five major capital cities. It won its timeslot, was the top rating drama and was the fourth highest rating programme for the day overall (after the major news bulletins). The corresponding Confidential Cutdown also rated a respectable 553,000 viewers in the five major capitals. These overnight figures, however, do not include regional, rural and time-shifted viewers and hence significantly understate the actual national ratings.

Let's Kill Hitler - Final ratings Posted: 03 Sep 2011 11:51 PM PDT Let's Kill Hitler had a final consolidated rating of 8.1 million viewers. The programme had a share of 33.3% of the total TV audience and was the most watched programme of the day on BBC One. The nearest programme on the channel was Casualty which had a final rating of 5.19 million. Consolidated figures include those who record and watch the programme within seven days. The final rating is much more accurate than the initial overnight figure and is based on the actual broadcast time of the programme rather than its scheduled time. The figues do not include those watching on iPlayer, where Let's Kill Hitler has already been accessed over 1 million times. The final figure for Let's Hill Hitler is the second highest of the series so far, The Impossible Astronaut had 8.86 million watching. It is the highest ever ratings for the eighth episode in a series since the show returned in 2005. A chart position will be released later this week when final figures from the whole week are available.

Posted: 03 Sep 2011 08:43 PM PDT Sometimes, science fiction and fantasy shows are mistreated. The past is littered with casualties of war that have been scheduled badly or cancelled abruptly. Doctor Who in 1989, Firefly in 2002 and Angel in 2004 (which creator Joss Whedon astutely likened to "a healthy guy dropping dead of a heart attack"). It seems that the problem can stem from a lack of faith in the program in question, plenty of channels are guilty of jettisoning what they feel is a dead duck but this week the channel that has caught the attention of i09 is Syfy. Formerly the Sci-Fi Channel, it has been partly responsible for keeping an interest in the genre and also for making some "odd" decisions. Some of these errors of judgement include not picking up Firefly when it was on offer, cancelling Farscape and Eureka and not picking up the revived series of Doctor Who as quickly as possible. The last one is surely the worst of the crimes! For those of you that haven't seen Firefly, Farscape or Eureka, you are nicely but firmly asked to go and seek out the DVD's. These shows were bright and original and should have been given greater room to grow. The real oddity is what seems to be the lack of faith that the channel first seemed to have when Doctor Who returned to the screens on 2005. The channel only managed to start showing the Ninth Doctor's adventures from 2006. Even then, they were heavily cut down. Then they let it go off to BBC America where it's gone from strength to strength. Odd behaviour for a channel that launched itself with repeats of classic Who. Where's the love? A full list of Syfy/ The Sci-Fi Channel's atrocities can be found at io9.com…
Night Terrors: UK overnight viewing figures Posted: 03 Sep 2011 07:58 PM PDT 5.5 million viewers tuned in to watch Night Terrors, according to unofficial overnight figures. The eighth in the current series has a share of 25.9% of the total TV audience as it faced its toughest opposition for some time. On ITV1, Red and Black, the new game show with Ant and Dec had an average of 6.6 million watching. Doctor Who was the most watched programme of the day on BBC One and fourth overall for the day. ITV1 took the first three places with The X Factor on top with 11.1 million, followed by the two editions of Red and Black. Doctor Who's audience was steady throughout the episode, with a peak of 5.6 million viewers and nearly 2.7 million leaving BBC One as the show finished, boosting Red and Black in its final half hour. Doctor Who currently stands at 21st for the week. Final figures, which will be released in 8 days time, should see the final total rise considerably, when those who record the episode and watch it later are factored in. Doctor Who is likely to have a much higher percentage of people watching on a delay and could overtake Red and Black on the final ratings.

Episode 8 of Torchwood: Miracle Day already! It doesn't feel like two-plus years have passed since we witnessed the awe-inspiring Children of Earth miniseries and pondered just how the fourth series might top it. While it may be too early to judge, as we still have yet to see the finale, we pretty much have our answer now: Miracle Day is superior to its predecessor in precisely zero ways. But let's not argue that it was a total let-down, because Torchwood's fourth run is still a smashing piece of television, and End of the Road continues to demonstrate this. I was prepared to start this review with an entirely different argument, that the series was destined to stew in the purgatory of mediocrity, when I saw Wayne Knight's face at the beginning of the episode; you may recall that I had a bit of a problem with his performance way back in Rendition. But uh-uh-uh, he said the magic word… on live television in front of tens of people. Doesn't sound like much, but apparently it was enough to blow his cover and blow him up. The Torchwood team united with the CIA this week, properly this time, to mope around in the mansion of some bloke who'd just kicked the bucket. If this sounds to you like just another day on a cop show, you've probably not been watching at all this year, so it's time to fill you in – people can't die. So why did Jack's ex-boyfriend Angelo Colasanto do just that? But of course, a mysterious alien floor panel resting underneath him that was recovered from the Torchwood Hub. Just make one of those things the size of, say, Earth, and everyone can die again! There, problem solved! Pace-wise, the story slowed down a tiny bit in the middle during Jack's scene alone with the still-living Category One Angelo. The whole sequence could have been cut down to maybe Jack sitting at Angelo's bedside holding his hand, followed by the elderly fella's death. Not so, we had to sit through several minutes of the plot that could have been used for rising action or, better yet, more exploding vehicles, just to see Jack talk to the air for a while, throw in a Ianto reference, and mouth-kiss an old person. Ah, old-person kissing, now there's something controversial! Jack and Angelo are like Harold and Maude if Harold was a dashing mortal/immortal ex-Time Agent and Maude was a man.
Gwen's brief phone call home reminded us that she has a family, and specifically, that she has a husband. For someone who's got his name in the opening credits I really hoped we'd be seeing a lot more from Kai Owen (as Rhys Williams) this season; he really added to Children of Earth's splendor in 2009, but in 2011 he seems to have been demoted to something less than a Mickey Smith Tin Dog role. On the bright side, it appears he'll be playing a larger part in the final two installments, because Gwen's been deported, and she's going back to Wales. Again. Seriously, when this is all over, her airline bill's going to take a massive bite out of Anwen's diaper funds. Surprisingly, the most engaging part of the story this week was the Oswald Danes subplot. After a two-week hiatus, it was interesting to see Ozzy and Jilly end up in Texas, which may be the closest a televised Whoniverse story has ever come to my own house. Speaking of Jilly, and Lauren Ambrose who plays her, she's still growing on me. Originally I didn't like her. Then I did. Now I think I might be developing a small crush. Just a small one. Really though, last time we saw her, in The Categories of Life, she was practically insane with happiness about Oswald's rise to "popularity" and her connection to it. Now she's physically attacking Oswald (though technically he started it), threatening to have him arrested (because, well, he started it), and calling him I'm not sure where the writers are going with this Danes thing though. Are they trying to get us, the viewers, to feel sorry for his character? The escort-rejection scene would almost suggest that this is the case, and I'm not sure I like that. I'm almost offended, actually. It was a nice throwback to see the undercover agent try to out-Kitzinger Kitzinger, following her around obsessively and fetching meals and prostitutes before she ended up shot by a member of "the family," who seems to be related to/in cahoots with the CIA blonde, who we saw video-chatting with Esther Drummond, who was/is frightened for her sister but is presently concerned about the croaking Harkness in the back of her van. See how complex and intertwined this plot is? Because I sure don't. Will Jack die? Will Jill turn evil? Will Gwen get a frequent flyer plan? All will be revealed in the next two weeks!
