Posted: 08 Sep 2011 05:00 AM PDT It's that time of the week, people – the Kasterborous podKast (with a "K") is back, with Brian Terranova and Christian Cawley discussing the recent episodes of Torchwood: Miracle Day and Doctor Who! This week we're discussing Night Terrors, the frightening new episode of Doctor Who and ask if it bears more than a passing resemblance to the 2006 episode Fear Her. We also take a look at End of the Road, episode eight of Torchwood: Miracle Day which sees the Torchwood team finally confronted by the CIA and a strong clue as to what has caused the Miracle… Do you listen to the podKast using the clever player gadget above? If not, you might prefer to download it and use a mobile media player, and experienced podcast listeners can subscribe to our RSS feed or find us listed on iTunes. As ever, feel free to let us know if you have any thoughts about what we've discussed this week! Ultimate Regeneration Free Download! Posted: 08 Sep 2011 04:45 AM PDT Long-term readers of Kasterborous will know that in February of this year we published our first title, Ultimate Regeneration, a collection of reviews and essays from the first five years of the site covering the Russell T Davies era of Doctor Who. You should know by now that the cover was produced by esteemed Doctor Who illustrator Anthony Dry, whose awesome work is well known; incidentally some of his illustrations will grace the Series 6 Part 2 boxset in a few months time! Ultimate Regeneration features contributions from Vworp Vworp! editor Gareth Kavanagh and Kasterborous regulars Thomas Willam Spychalski and Brian A. Terranova, and is held together by a contextual commentary by Christian Cawley. Thanks to the support of loyal readers who pre-ordered, we were able to produce an initial run of 250 copies, which have virtually run out in a flurry of mail orders and signing appearances by Christian Cawley. However, all is not lost, as the book has recently been added to the Lulu online bookstore in eBook and POD (print on demand) formats. Better still, we've decided to share the first chapter – 32 pages worth – with every single Kasterborous reader for free! All you need to do is click the link below to download a PDF sample of the book, and if you like what you see you can then purchase the rest! Download your free 32 page sample of Ultimate Regeneration! If you like what you see and wish to read a bit more, please head on over to Lulu where you can find a print version of the revised edition of the book for £12.99 ($20.82) plus postage and the eBook release for just £4.99 ($8)!

What Scares You About Doctor Who? Posted: 07 Sep 2011 11:32 PM PDT Following the recent Night Terrors, it got me thinking: what scares you in the world of Doctor Who? If you are a seasoned fan, with over ten years of knowledge, then perhaps you are a little too old to be frightened, so perhaps I should be asking what "scared" you about the show? It would be a little too easy, and predictable, to say "Daleks", and so I ask you to look at Doctor Who a little deeper than that and explore those moments that stay in the mind, and haunt your nightmares… Who can forget The Idiot's Lantern (2006) with its face-stealing scenes – there is no doubt that a faceless being is terrifying, we all gain comfort from seeing other peoples' facial expressions, we look into their eyes, expect to see a smile. But here, thanks to The Wire, these very things are removed, leaving behind an empty mask, void of expression. In similar style, two-part story The Empty Child (followed by The Doctor Dances) is a 2005 spectacular giving us a wartime adventure unlike any other: a mysterious child clad in gas mask, upon his touch victims transform to become like him – in search of his "Mummy!" Even the statue-like Weeping Angels have a deadly touch, perhaps not in their first outing (where they were able to send their victims to an earlier time frame, Blink 2007) – but as a desperate pack of creatures in The Time of Angels and Flesh and Stone (2010) there was, indeed, need for fear: they had now become ruthless killers! So how about further back in time, to a point when Doctor Who was younger than it is today? What classic moments linger in your mind? Marc Platt's Ghost Light perhaps, a 1989 tale of mystery surrounding the occupants and history of Gabriel Chase, a Victorian mansion in 1883? Maybe, to find a genuine scare, we must step back to the days of the Fourth Doctor, played so perfectly by Tom Baker. Who can forget the chilling presence of Geoffrey Beevers' evil statue, as fellow fan Alix Cavanagh says on Twitter:
But what are your memories? Or indeed, should I really be asking: what would you like to see that hasn't happened yet? In your opinion, is there a fear that is yet to be touched upon the Doctor Who team? There is always strength in playing with one's phobias; for some there is no greater fear than a clown, a gigantic wasp, demons, snakes, or visitations (including ghosts) etc. And please don't feel the need to be restricted by "canon", there is an ocean of novels and audio adventures that, too, set the imagination racing overtime, planting all manner of monsters and beings into your thoughts. As an example, I remember listening to Justin Richards' Big Finish offering Whispers of Terror and finding myself wondering if anything would, indeed, find its way through my headphones! How do you face an enemy that is difficult to contain, that isn't physical in appearance? Would you agree that the scariest episodes are those in black and white, totally devoid of colour? There is something nightmarish about a being, colourless, creeping towards you, out of the shadows. So, what scares you about Doctor Who? Perhaps you would like to choose one entity/monster per Doctor? Go on – share your nightmares with us!

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 11:13 PM PDT Has the BBC inadvertently given away a spoiler for the season finale of this year's Doctor Who? Maybe, is the answer. If you don't want to know what we're talking about, don't click this link. Don't read any further – hit the back button and check the lottery results! Recently, the good old Beeb revealed the episode titles for the last few episodes of Doctor Who Confidential. The title for episode thirteen of the documentary show was revealed as When Time Froze. Speculation has already started as to what that may mean in relation to episode thirteen and its contents. Will the Doctor freeze time at the last second so that he can replace himself with some kind of copy (not really his style)? Will time freeze and then someone come to his rescue? Or is the title When Time Froze a massive red herring? The BBC have certainly released spoiler related information on Doctor Who ahead of schedule before but this year's run of episodes have been as closely guarded as possible so it does seem strange that they would make such a strange error at the last minute. Unless that was part of the master plan in order to keep us guessing. Speculation is all that we have to go on at the moment however; Kasterborous's advice is to avoid the spoilers and enjoy the episode on the day. Wait and see what twists and turns emerge. Because knowing Steven Moffat, there's going to be one hell of a show… | ||
