Extra Disc for the Fourth Doctor Lost Stories Box Set

Posted: 11 Sep 2011 05:09 PM PDT

Doctor Who: The Lost Stories – The Fourth Doctor Box Set is growing… and will now be a six-disc box set, following the addition of an hour-long audio documentary.

The collection comprises two adventures that were devised for the TV series in the late 1970s but never made. The epic six-part Foe from the Future was developed by Robert Banks Stewart and has been adapted by John Dorney; the four-part The Valley of Death was developed by Philip Hinchcliffe and has been adapted by Jonathan Morris.

"We had an amazing week in the studio recording these stories," says producer David Richardson. "It felt like we had finally completed two long-lost classics starring Tom Baker and Louise Jameson.

"What also came out of that week was many hours of interviews, out-takes and alternate takes. It seemed a shame not to be able to use these to their full potential, especially as it includes a lot of input from Tom, and his thoughts on joining Big Finish. Hence the decision was taken to add a sixth disc to the set which is devoted to a documentary detailing the development and recording of these two stories."

The Fourth Doctor Box Set is available for pre-order, and also as a bundle with the upcoming Fourth Doctor Adventures.

The Guardian have released the second best ebook with the word 'regeneration' in the title with Who's Who? The Resurrection of the Doctor.

As reported on the Doctor Who News Page the book charts how The Guardian has covered Britain's Saturday tea time favourite since its 'ultimate regeneration' in 2005.

Featuring interviews with all three Doctors (Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith) as well as the two men charged with bring the Doctor to our screen, Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffat, the book also includes interviews with a host of actors who have appeared in the show.

Whether monsters, villains or allies such as Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman, and John Barrowman, the book features chats with some of the writers including Mark Gatiss and Neil Gaiman.

The book is part of a series called 'Guardian Shorts' and follows on from Phone Hacking: How the Guardian Broke the Story which was published last month and is followed by others such as 9/11: Ten Years On.

Who's Who? The Resurrection of the Doctor will be released in the next few months for the Kindle and in the iBookstore.

Killing The Doctor Before It Was Cool

Posted: 11 Sep 2011 05:33 AM PDT

Before River was brainwashed into killing the Doctor, there was Turlough. If you're tired of this year's Doctor-killing arc, or "The River Song Show" as some of the guys here on Kasterborous have dubbed it, you might be interested to read this lengthy interview with Mark "Turlough" Strickson.

It covers a great deal of ground about the years since he left Doctor Who and his move into television production, as well as the typical producer cagey-ness about his new project. Amusingly, he starts off the interview (conducted over Skype, a sign of the times if ever there was one) by saying that his mother prefers the RTD-era onwards to her own son's work in the show.

Now, I can't claim to be a big fan of his work, since I have seen exactly one serial with him in his companion role (Resurrection Of The Daleks) but it still makes for interesting reading. I didn't even know that he'd gone into television production before I read this but was absolutely astounded to discover that he made the career of the late Steve Irwin by producing the show that shot him to stardom. (Incidentally, it's probably a good idea to stay away from me if you see me at a Who convention, as I love trivia like this and will keep on using it.)

It is also interesting if you're interested in his work for Big Finish and want to know more about what went on behind the scenes of his era of Doctor Who. For example:

The BBC rehearsal rooms, at the time, were on a traffic island in North Acton in the West of London [I'm still not entirely sure what he means by that, incidentally].You couldn't walk to a shop. There was nothing there.

He also notes the rather obvious problem of having too many characters and too little for them to do, while his main role was to attempt to kill the Doctor:

The problem with that is that within a 25 minute program and you've got the Doctor and a female assistant and a baddie and another character like Turlough you really haven't got time for it.

The interview is, as I mentioned in the link, rather lengthy but is all in all good reading, so I recommend checking it out!

Night Terrors had a final consolidated rating of 7.07 million viewers.

Consolidated figures include those who record and watch the programme within seven days. The final rating is much more accurate than the initial overnight figure and is based on the actual broadcast time of the programme rather than its scheduled time.

Up against Doctor Who, Red or Black achieved an average audience of 7.11 million viewers, although during the time the programmes were head to head Doctor Who outrated the game show.

A chart position will be released later this week when final figures from the whole week are available.

More Torchwood? ALREADY!? (No!)

Posted: 10 Sep 2011 09:52 PM PDT

Rumours of a fifth series for Torchwood have been dancing around the web since before the first episode of Miracle Day aired, and while we're yet to receive any formal confirmation (and it might be a while before any is forthcoming), this little surprise was seen in Australia this weekend:

(You can disregard the title of the video, we reckon…)

So what is in the offing? With no news of another series in production and John Barrowman currently (certainly until recently) back in the UK, it seems likely that if this was true, an announcement would be made pretty soon.

Could it be that Starz/BBC Wales are planning to announce something just as soon as the final episode airs in the UK on Thursday? Could the wheels already be turning for a sooner press release, perhaps as soon as Monday?

Or… could it simply be a series of Torchwood repeats?

After all, for a new series to be aired in early 2012, it has to be made first, something that could prove a bit of a problem. It's currently September, and with the Winter break in mid-December it doesn't seem likely that a full series could possibly be ready in time.

So, repeats it is then! (Or perhaps a Torchwood TV movie – after all, it's the only format left…)

Night Terrors: Australian ratings

Posted: 10 Sep 2011 08:07 PM PDT

Night Terrors has debuted in Australia to solid ratings. TV Tonight reports that, up against the football finals on the commercial stations, the episode averaged 660,000 viewers in the five major capital cities. It was the top rating drama and the eight highest rating programme for the day overall (after the major news bulletins and the football finals). The corresponding Confidential Cutdown also rated a respectable 433,000 viewers in the five major capitals. These overnight figures, however, do not include regional, rural and time-shifted viewers and hence significantly understate the actual national ratings.

The Girl Who Waited: Overnight Viewing Figures

Posted: 10 Sep 2011 07:49 PM PDT

6.0 million watched Doctor Who: The Girl Who Waited on Saturday according to unofficial overnight figures.

The the programme was up slightly on last week and with an audience share of 26.8% was the third highest rated show of the day.

Against Doctor Who, the Ant and Dec Game show, Red and Black, achieved just 4.6 million viewers, far below the aspirations ITV1 had for the show and 2 million down on the previous week.. Winner on the night was The X Factor which had 10.6 million watching. The launch of Strictly Come Dancing had an audience of 7.6 million viewers.

With one day to come Doctor Who is the eighteenth most watched programme of the week.

Official figures will be released next week by BARB with a place in the top ten perfectly possible.

The Scarifyers Returns!

Posted: 10 Sep 2011 07:44 PM PDT

The Scarifyers, audio mystery stories starring the late and great Nicholas Courtney and also the brilliant Terry Molloy, are back this November with a brand new tale.

Detective Inspector Lionheart (Courtney) and Professor Dunning (Molloy) have battled spirits and set up top secret departments to tackle other worldly mysteries. Their exploits have been heard by many, including audiences listening to radio station BBC7, where the series was broadcast to the public.

Since that sad passing of Nicholas Courtney this year however, the series is taking a bold new step and looks set to be just as exciting as ever:

Professor Dunning (Terry Molloy) is finding the business of single-handedly saving Great Britain from the forces of darkness rather taxing.

And Lionheart? Lionheart is missing.

When the only clue to his disappearance seems to lie in a twenty-year-old murder investigation, Dunning turns to the one man who might have the answers: Lionheart's erstwhile colleague Harry 'Thumper' Crow (David Warner).

Harry doesn't hold with supernaturalism, but over the next few days he's going to see some very strange things indeed: a string of murdered magicians, a dead music-hall star come back to life, and a pensioner from the depths of hell.

Can Crow and Dunning find Lionheart? A terrible truth awaits, as they unearth the long-buried secrets of "The Magic Circle"

This is the sixth adventure of The Scarifyers.

Due out on November 1st 2011, you can find out how to order a copy by visiting www.cosmichobo.com or emailing simon@cosmichobo.com

Series 5 of Torchwood for January 2012?

Posted: 10 Sep 2011 07:39 PM PDT

I know, I know...we only just got done with Series 4 of Torchwood, right? Well, if a certain 10-second teaser at the end of the Australian airing of Torchwood: Miracle Day is anything to be believed by, fans can expect to see more Jack as soon as January 2012.

The 10-second promo (which you can view at the end of this news item), which features the familiar Torchwood 'T' in the background, flashed up with the tagline 'Jack will be back - January 2012'.

Now, let's refresh ourselves with a certain interview with Russell T. Davies from a 26th June 2011 edition of The Guaradian, where he had the following to say regarding more Torchwood:

"It's hugely exciting and I've got to do this again. I've got one more story that I can tell – just one more that has Gwen right at the centre of it – that would be fantastic. So I'm my own worst enemy."

Maybe there will be new Torchwood in January, but with just 4 months to go, surely they're cutting things a little close? Either way, looking at the ratings worldwide for Miracle Day, an official announcement cannot be far off...can it?
