Everyone’s The Doctor in Atlanta! Posted: 10 Sep 2011 01:23 AM PDT Since time (or, at the very least, conventions) began, it has been considered acceptable for fully-grown men and women to gather, dressed up as their favourite characters from any form of media. Most call this 'weird,' but there are some who prefer the term, 'Cosplay.' It's a form of expression, often meaning something like: "yes, I like Doctor Who so much, I dress up as an Androgum at weekends." If we're being honest, there aren't many of us who haven't considered a Very Long Scarf, Fez, or a multi-coloured, eye-achingly bright coat, simply because the Doctor Wears One. And at the recent Dragon*Con in Atlanta (where last week we saw Sylvester McCoy reading Matt Smith's lines), everybody wears their associations on their sleeves, lapels or sticks of celery. Geeks of Doom have posted fifteen photos of some excellent costumes. Also, some not-so-excellent costumes. Amongst their ranks, there are a few K9s, a TARDIS or two, a brilliant Sanctuary Base Six spacesuit, and even a new paradigm of sink-plunger-and-whisk-swinging girls. Surprisingly, though… no Androgums.

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 10:07 PM PDT You can't avoid them it seems and to prove that point I'll warn you now; here be spoilers! Stop reading now if you haven't seen The Sixth Sense, King Kong, The Amazing Spider-Man, Bambi, The Empire Strikes Back, Planet of the Apes or any of the Harry Potter films or books. Don't worry though, I won't be spoiling anything that hasn't aired yet. Well, one thing. But as you'll see I really don't think it can really be classified as a spoiler. I was first introduced to the idea of spoilers back in High School. A friend of mine introduced me to two linked trilogies, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, and as I reached the halfway mark of the first book decided that he would tell me how the last book ended. Now in 1993/4 I had no idea that the technical phrase for that was 'being spoiled', I just knew I was pretty damned annoyed. Having said that I still finished, and enjoyed, the books. But from that early seed came an intense hatred of spoilers, one that lasts even to this day. Which is why I was irked the other day when I was accused of spoiling someone's viewing of Trial of a Time Lord by revealing that the Valeyard was a dark version of the Doctor. Oops I did it again. Except that's not a spoiler. Not in my view at any rate. The Trial of a Time Lord aired 25 years ago on the BBC, there has been a novelisation, a DVD release and the Valeyard has gone onto appear in various other guises in Doctor Who media. Most recently as the Dream Lord. It's not a spoiler in the strictest sense. That's not to say that I'm not sorry I ruined Trial for that individual, because I am, it's just that I'm amazed he had got that far without knowing. So when is a spoiler not a spoiler? Well, let's start with a clear cut answer. If something hasn't been aired publicly in a certain country, then that's a spoiler. We'll call that a Moffat-Spoiler. When something has aired, but there's a period of time immediately afterwards where not everyone might have seen it. The finale of Torchwood for example; we Brits have no idea what our colonial cousins will learn during their Friday evening viewing until next Thursday. This is a Courtesy-Spoiler (recently royally screwed up by the Telegraph website). A conditional-spoiler is a much trickier beast. It's when a friend hasn't seen a program or read a book yet and they don't want to know what happens. This is a bit of a gray area. I once sat in a cinema audience to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince when the guy I was seeing it with turned round and asked "This is the one where Dumbledore dies, isn't?" It was. His argument to this day was that since the book had been published several years earlier it wasn't technically a spoiler, however the looks on the faces of the children and turned round and stared at us with wobbling lips made that technicality obsolete. The looks from their parents made it scary. Finally we have the open-spoiler. These are fair game, these are the ones that everyone knows about. We all know that Vader is Luke's Dad, Bambi's Mum'll end up hanging from a hunter's wall, Bruce Willis is pretty dead, The Planet of the Apes is really earth and that things are never going to end well for a giant monkey roaming round America, regardless of which remake you watch. Oh and things are not going to end well for Martin Sheen's Uncle Ben in the upcoming Amazing Spider-man either. So, where does Doctor Who sit in terms of spoilers? Everywhere. It's been going for nearly half a century and if we treat every twist and turn as a spoiler then you might as well shut down the Who forums right now. After all, in 1966 who knew the Doctor could regenerate?

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 08:03 PM PDT David Tennant can be heard in a new thirteen-part play to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 between 18th-25th September; Life And Fate sees him star alongside Kenneth Branagh in an adaptation of Vasily Grossman's book centred around the battle of Stalingrad, and charting the fate of both a nation and a family in the turmoil of war. The pair can also be seen introducing their characters and what makes a radio play special on YouTube. [BBC Radio 4 details] Karen Gillan will be guest DJ on Monster FM during Sunday 11th September (time tbc). [Monster FM] Sylvester McCoy will be appearing in the Bath Theatre Royal production of The Mikado between 19th-24th September, starring as the titular role alongside Nichola McAuliffe as Katisha, Rebecca Knight as Yum-Yum, Alistair Donkin as Ko-Ko and Mark Llewellyn Evans as Pish-Tush. [Theatre Royal] Freema Agyeman (Martha) can be seen playing the role of Kareema in the film Abduction, released on 23rd September; the film stars Taylor Lautner and also features Jason Isaacs and Sigourney Weaver. John Barrowman has made it clear he'd like to be involved in Doctor Who's anniversary: "It's the 50th anniversary coming up of 'Doctor Who' and Jack is an integral part to this story and, if I'm going to be a little self-absorbed, I would hope he would be involved, it would be a shame if he wasn't. I don't think it's a question of whether I would like to come back as Captain Jack, I'd be very happy to do that any time. I know the fans would really like that. But it's a decision left up to the BBC and the drama department. So like I've said to all the fans you need to write to them if you want it to happen because I've never been asked. I know Russell thinks it might be a nice idea as did Steven Moffat but who knows?" [Bang Showbiz, 8 Sep 2011] Mark Strickson (Turlough) comments on what his mother thought of the new series upon its return: "Mum said, 'yeah, it's much better than when you were in it.' What my mum meant by that was that they had spent a lot more money on it ... the graphics are amazing ... it's written more as a drama ... in like a movie form ... and there's lots more opportunities for character development in that way when you're not slicing it in-between Look West and Softly Softly. You look back and we got fantastic ratings. [Stuff, 9 Sep 2011] Roger Griffiths (Commander Kess, A Good Man Goes To War) talks about how his appearance went down well with his son: I got a lot of points for Doctor Who. My youngest came home with this coolness and threw across the dining table these cards which I was on with my powers. Forget everything at that point, this is what it's about: 'the boy is trading your cards at school'. I got a lot of credits in the playground for that and Batman Begins." [Bakewell Today, 9 Sep 2011] Local and national papers have reported on the tragic death of actor Gary Suller, with mention of his appearance in Doctor Who (he was a supporting artist in The End of Time). How Not to Raise Your Daughter Posted: 09 Sep 2011 07:37 PM PDT Troubled by the ease of which Amy and Rory got over the fact they spent their childhood years raising their daughter? You're not alone. Arthur Darvill has told io9 that he and his co-stars questioned just how quickly they accepted the fact that their onscreen counterparts had no trouble with their daughter sharing third period maths with them:
So was it a fiendishly clever way of tying together both Madame Kovarian's plot to assassinate the Doctor using Melody Pond and the Doctor's own hunt for her at her parents' behest or another moment of the show creating and then sacrificing real human emotion for the sake of fast paced, cerebral plotting? Many reviewers of Night Terrors thought so too but in those instances it was largely blamed on the positioning of that episode and the lack of momentum regarding the overal series arc. Whatever your opinion on Let's Kill Hitler the issue of just what happened to Melody Pond is far from over and its difficult to image Moffat's bear trap-like mind letting those threads dangle like that. The key term is 'average person': Would the Doctor select companions and keep them if he knew that the massive upheaval (which unlike the RTD era has evolved and altered beyond the companion simply being overawed and possessive of that life) they were about to go through would damage them? Arthur Darvill doesn't think so:
However its that fortitude and strength of character that has made Rory the Doctor Who equivalent of the red shirt wearing ensign beamed down to an alien planet on Star Trek- a man marked for death.
As Arthur points out Rory's status as a 'bumbling hero' is borne from his desire to protect the people he loves and, like the Melody Pond situation, is part of the changing relationships within the good family onboard the TARDIS. The very nature of the show dictates that characters not dwell for too long on their own suffering because, like its main character, who wants to dwell on how things are different in this microcosm and their own impact/damage they have caused when there's a universe of monster, experiences and wonders to see?
