TV Choice Awards: 2011 Results Posted: 13 Sep 2011 09:18 AM PDT Tonight saw the 15th annual TV Choice Awards take place at the Savoy Hotel in London, with Doctor Who winning the Best Family Drama award for the second year running; the programme beat spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures and this year's NTA winner Waterloo Road. Karen Gillan also won the Best Actress award for a second year as well for her role as Amy in Doctor Who; she was up against fellow "Who" names Alex Kingston (Marchlands), Elisabeth Sladen (The Sarah Jane Adventures) and Freema Agyeman (Law and Order UK). However, Matt Smith lost out on the Best Actor award, which went to his predecessor as the Doctor, David Tennant (Single Father); other nominees included the other Doctor of this millennium, Christopher Eccleston (The Shadow Line). Results for all categories may be found via the TV Choice Awards website.

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 07:07 AM PDT This week's Doctor Who took the series to a much needed and more serious place, one where time travel is dangerous and you never know what is (or isn't) on the other side of the door. Attempting to drive a wedge between Amy and Rory with the very real prospect of a much older, changed Amy Pond was a fantastic idea in a story which saw the Doctor become as much an enemy to his companions as time itself. I firmly believe that this episode is in the same class as The Doctor's Wife, Midnight, Blink, Human Nature and Waters of Mars as being among the very cream of stories since Doctor Who returned in 2005. Writer Tom MacRae – whose previous Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel wasn't exactly a fan favourite back in 2006 – has given us a story with real heart, built up with layers of emotion, love, anger, hatred, anger, dismay and even some laughter. We should all spend some time considering the choices that Rory was forced to make in this story, and hope that we're never in this position. Destined to be the next big thing out of Cupertino, the iHandbots looked as though they had Steve Jobs' dabs all over them, from the smooth design to the clever use of a flesh-like hand to provide a human interface. They were supremely cool, however, with a head packed full of dart syringes and the ability to transmat into position and start marching on their intended plague sufferer. The fact that "Apple App Achia" was in quarantine because of the Chen7 plague was a useful way of keeping the Doctor out of the action, yet his presence was felt throughout either in the shape of a truly excellent Matt Smith (playing it darker than the Time Lord Victorious ever did) or the shadow that his actions cast across a story that demanded that poor Rory make a choice between two versions of his wife, knowing that one will be erased and the other left to endure 36 years of solitude armed only with a voice controlled Interface (renowned character actress Imelda Staunton) and the inspiration of having travelled with a sonic screwdriver-wielding madman in box. Eagle-eyed viewers would have noticed yet more CO2 related shenanigans in this latest episode, with the Two Streams kindness facility featuring a Green Anchor or a Red Waterfall option (which is how Amy gets lost, making the wrong choice). Those with long memories will remember the empty pond at Leadworth, River Song, Melody Pond and all of the various nautical/wet references over the past two years. Either The Grand Moff is descended from pirates or he's bitter about the amount of rain he endured in his formative years in Paisley. "This is how it ends… Pond flirting with herself," said the Doctor in the Comic Relief special Time/Space, but when the prospect of a real second Amy Pond is presented we don't get too many girl on girl quips from the Time Lord or Rory. Instead, the discovery of the older Amy, hiding away much like the alternate William Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Second Chances", comes as a shock, with both Rory and the Doctor initially unsure has to how to deal with her. What is most brilliant about the scenes with Mature Amy – makeup aside – is how the actress carries herself, adopts a different voice and generally uses quite evolved versions of Amy's mannerisms. Karen Gillan has come in for some unnecessary criticism over the last couple of years for her portrayal of Ms Pond, but I'm happy to say that she is definitely the actress I always thought she was. Mature Amy was brilliant, and it's mainly down to Gillan. One of the things that struck me most about Most importantly, let's watch it again…

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 06:22 AM PDT Some of you eagle-eared viewers may have caught a few lines from the final, absolute last bit of Series 6 on Saturday's Doctor Who Confidential in their From Script To Screen segment. The context for those of you who didn't catch it is that the kids have written an episode with Matt Smith's Doctor on his own encountering an old foe and Albert Einstein. Since he's on his own, it's presumably after the last episode (and is set to air after The Wedding Of River Song, so that would make sense). The fact that he's wearing a fez in it would also indicate that there are no companions around to forcibly remove it. The Doctor is clearly pleased to be reunited with his Egyptian headwear, and remarks that he missed the Fez following River Song's pre-reboot destruction of said silly attire.
You can see for yourself in Doctor Who Confidential, which is currently on the iPlayer (the line in question occurs around the 35:50 mark). So what do you think – Fez or Stetson?

Every Torchwood Episode on DVD! Posted: 13 Sep 2011 01:16 AM PDT As Series 4 of Torchwood comes to a close on Thursday, it's perhaps the perfect time to revisit past glories (and failings). Rex and Esther are great, but there's still room for Tosh, Owen and Ianto. So why not fork out those first three series and have a Torchwood marathon? One possible response would be: 'I haven't got the DVDs.' Fair enough. Me neither. I thought that the prices would dramatically drop, and hey, it's not Doctor Who, therefore, I don't have to get the boxset on Release Day. As such, I ended up with just series one. But that's fine, because they released Torchwood: The Collection, with the first two series, plus Children of Earth. Amazon has it for just – - sold out?! What do you mean, sold out? Calm your nerves. On 14th November, the Series 1-4 boxset (available for just £44.97 on Amazon!) will be released alongside the normal 2-disc Miracle Day DVD and Blu-ray:
Very ominous. And apt. The boxset includes every Torchwood episode to date, including the latest Miracle Day, creepy From Out Of The Rain, Weevil-centric Combat, and the critically-acclaimed Children of Earth. The (very impressive) 17-disc DVD has an RRP of £44.99, while the 15-disc Blu-ray set will be available for about £48.69. Meanwhile, John Barrowman recently told Female First that he still doesn't know if there will be another series:
Could be why he's angling for work then, eh…?

Demon Knights Wednesday Night at Forbidden Planet Posted: 13 Sep 2011 12:38 AM PDT Wednesday night at 7pm (UK)/2pm (EST) is when Demon Knights #1 becomes digitally available. It's already sold out at the distributors (meaning that comic shops think they can sell every copy that's been printed and want more), and is going to get a second printing (as is Stormwatch #1), so, erm, may I suggest getting to your comic shop early on Wednesday if you want a first edition (or going digital)? The issue itself will be available for download from that moment (or usually a couple of minutes after) by clicking on the cover image on the right margin over there. Yes, over there, look right... there it is. If you'd like your physical copy of the issue (or anything else) signed on Wednesday, and you're near London, then come along to Forbidden Planet, where I'll be signing from 6pm to 7pm. While we're talking about digital comics, the kind folk at Comixology have put together a page showing my entire back catalogue of digitally available work, including the whole Lex Luthor Action Comics run and much Captain Britain. And, for those of you who read my vast Worldcon report yesterday, well, it's come as a flattering surprise that your numbers include Brother Guy Consolmagno himself, who posted a response on his blog. I look forward to seeing some of you tomorrow night. Until then, Cheerio!
