The 12th Doctor a Woman? Surely Not… Posted: 14 Sep 2011 08:06 AM PDT Ever wondered what it would be like if the Twelfth Doctor (or indeed, any subsequent Doctor) was a woman (all those who've seen the non-canon spoof The Curse Of Fatal Death, you can keep your hands down)? Well, former omnisexual time agent John Barrowman has also expressed an interest in the matter and he already has someone in mind for the role – Catherine Tate, as it turns out. (Based on his character's comments in Journey's End, he's had that in mind for a while.) In my personal opinion, Catherine Tate wouldn't work as the Twelfth Doctor because we've already seen her as Donna Noble in Series 4 of the RTD-era, so she's very closely tied with the Tenth Doctor's era. While a Time Lord taking the appearance of a person they've met before does have precedent (see Commander Maxil and Princess Astra), I suspect that the time to take her appearance has since passed and that now it would just be a throwback to a different era of the show. Although, as a side thought, that would make her the Doctor Donna all over again. It's been confirmed by a throwaway line about the Corsair in Neil Gaiman's episode The Doctor's Wife that it is possible to change gender with regeneration, and the Eleventh Doctor's post-regeneration dialogue suggested it was possible before that, so was all that foreshadowing for a potential Sexy Valeyard? We've already seen from the Doctor "507 lives" controversy that fans don't like new parts of the Whoniverse not being set up in advance, so it's certainly possible. In the article, Barrowman (shakes fist) says,
Captain Jack's current lack of omnisexuality aside, I feel that while diversity and change is an admirable thing, and things shouldn't become stagnant, you shouldn't mess with a character who's been male as we understand it for 47 years just because you can or to tick boxes in some production document somewhere. And another thing, changing gender is something that seems quite difficult to do by choice and as we've seen with the Doctor, he never knows what he's going to end up with. So the odds of him changing gender would be astronomically high. Who do you think would make a good female Doctor? Do you think Catherine Tate would work well in the role? Or, like me, do you think the Doctor should stay male?

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 12:36 AM PDT Russell T Davies is back on writing duties with the Torchwood: Miracle Day finale, The Blood Line, which airs in the UK on Thursday evening at 9 pm on BBC One. With Jack and Gwen in Shanghai – with Oswald Danes in tow – and Esther and Rex at the exact opposite side of the planet in Buenos Aires, you can expect references to more new age conspiracies throughout the episode as our at-times inept heroes attempt to undo the Miracle and prevent civilization from falling further into the abyss. The BBC offers just this solitary synopsis of the episode:
We can tell you that the episode gives as much as the entire series has so far in terms of dialogue, action, intrigue and most importantly, drama. As teases go, it isn't much, but we really don't want to spoil it for you. The series has been working up to this episode, and when all is said and done, the The Blood Line delivers in the end. Okay, UK viewers: if you have been avoiding spoilers from the US fans and downloaders, coming next is the trailer for the Torchwood: Miracle Day finale: Thanks to the BBC we've got a small selection of images showing Jack and Gwen in varous states of distress: As conspiracies go, they don't get much bigger than this… don't miss the explosive finale!

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 11:17 PM PDT Now we're getting there! It took it's time getting there but for me Torchwood: Miracle Day has finally found its feet with Episode 9, The Gathering. The team seems far less inept that in previous episodes (or indeed previous series) and taking the opportunity to take control of the situation. However, the episode is not without its issues, so for the sake of getting my concerns out of the way I'll do them first. Gwen is back in Cardiff and knocking off drug stores and selling the extras on the "black market" and no one has any clue that it is her, despite the fact that she takes off her mask. Oh sure she knocked out the camera but really, not one else is watching? Aside from that I do wonder how Esther was able to get a wounded Jack to Scotland when she has proved the most useless team member of them all, but hey she did something good here right? Anyway, moving on, Bill Pullman is back! And as usual he gives a stellar performance, but what's the point of him again? I'm still not seeing it. But never mind, he's on the Torchwood Team! Surely things will get interesting from here. He's been the only character to maintain any sort of an engaging presence, despite his sickening backstory. Now, Rex finds a lead and gets stifled by the plant in the CIA, but then finds a way back into his lead. Well done Rex! That's how Torchwood should be working, tirelessly to save the day! While Rex may have been number 3 on the most wanted list there are clearly no worries at the CIA, who trust him to go underground on his own with no contact to save the day. Naturally, as we all know, this is how the CIA really operate… Right? Yeah, me either…. In any event, Kai Owen delivered a good scene when he was able to see what Torchwood couldn't and found the source of the Blessing in one of those serendipitous moments that only happen on TV or in the movies. I love those types of scenes. Not only that, but Rhys has finally showed how people should really have been reacting to Oswald Danes rather than worshiping the man. Well, we did see a bit of this with Jilly Kitzinger and the hooker she hired previously, which brings us nicely to Jilly and her situation. I haven't been her biggest supporter in the beginning as she seemed like a very flat character but since the previous two episodes she has really began to develop and show her worth. I can only hope that there is a good pay off for her character as we move on into the final episode of the story. But fair dues here, Lauren Ambrose has really proved me wrong about her characterization in this story. I know that the writers have been trying to make us feel sympathy for the team with Gwen's father and Ether's sister, but honestly once again the scenes with Gwen's father and her reaction to them have done nothing for me. As a matter of fact the only time I felt the sympathy we were meant to was when Rex lost Dr. Juarez. Not to say I feel nothing for Gwen, of course you can put yourself in her position, but it just somehow seems less important for them to be able to have these family moments rather than the separation forced on them in Children of the Earth. That said, all in all The Gathering has proved to be what the series should have been from Episode 1 of Miracle Day. If episode 10, The Blood Lines, ends on a good a note than maybe it could be considered a miracle for Miracle Day to come out on top. High hopes ahead…
Posted: 13 Sep 2011 10:21 PM PDT If you enjoyed The Girl Who Waited, The Doctor's Wife, Night Terrors or any other River Song-lite episode this season, then The God Complex is probably something that you will be looking forward to. Written by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse (whose previous Doctor Who episodes are School Reunion (2006) and Vampires of Venice (2010)), The God Complex takes our travellers to a mysterious 1980s hotel, complete with monstrous fears such as clows, ventriloquist dolls, Weeping Angels and even David Walliams! Walliams – a star of Little Britain and Come Fly With Me (not to mention the work of genius that preceded both, Rock Profiles) – guests as the rodent-like Figgis, and clearly endured a torrid time under the astonishing makeup. Given his impressive determination and stamina in swimming the Thames recently, however, this was probably a walk in the park. So, a few thoughts about the episode in a moment – in the meantime, the BBC's official synopsis:
After the character shaping events of The Girl Who Waited, you might be forgiven for thinking that The God Complex is a more light-hearted affair, particularly with the present of a comedy actor among the guest cast. As it is there are few laughs, and as the 7.15 timeslot should demonstrate, The God Complex is back into the territory of Night Terrors. There are scares aplenty in this episode, from the architecture of the hotel reconfiguring itself seeming at will to the presence of a stomping, fearsome minotaur. This is also an episode in which the Doctor doesn't seem to be in control, although this will surely be open to question when you reach the end and find out just what the heck has been going on. With some great guest appearances, more wonderful direction and a strikingly emotional ending, however, I hope you'll join with me in punching the air once again when the Doctor refers to the Nimon. As with The Girl Who Waited, The God Complex is a must-watch-on-the-night episode, unless you're willing to be spoilered to hell and back with emails, text messages and Tweets before watching… Now, to get you in the mood: Last but not least, our gallery, provided by the BBC: The God Complex airs on BBC One and BBC HD this Saturday, 17th September at 7.10 pm and on BBC America at 9/8c!
