| Posted: 24 Mar 2008 03:19 AM CDT I am determined to prove that I don't always leave it for months before I think of you all logging on to Rob's excellent website about your humble blogster. So even though it is only a week since I last blogged - hey folks - here we go again!! Mind you I am not sure that I have that much to report, although it's not as bad as those diaries of my childhood where I seem to have recorded "Got up 7-32 - went to school - no homework - yippee - went to bed 9-45." I can report that I have returned to the fold and spent the whole week stooping to conquer in Richmond without too much adverse effect. The lungs are still not their usual bellowing "Brian Blessed" style best - but they are mercifully adequate to the task. The company of actors and crew were incredibly welcoming. It was almost worth being ill just to realise what a lovely lot of folk I am working with. And indeed what a lovely lot I am working for! Jenny King - the producer of the show - who arguably was the person most likely to suffer an adverse effect from my absence, in the event that the theatres or audiences complained - couldn't have been more concerned for welfare and indeed anxious that I should not return before I was back to full health. I have to say her attitude and concern contrasted amazingly favourably when compared with her counterpart at the Norwich Theatre Royal, whose approach was markedly less concerned for my welfare - but that's another story and probably not for this blog (having whetted your appetites !!!) I received text messages of support and concern from almost all the cast - well the literate ones!! So it was a joy to get back to them again for a very successful week in Richmond. I write this on Easter Monday and we are all off to Cambridge Arts Theatre tomorrow - a favourite of mine because it was at that Theatre that I made my first appearance as a professional actor on 31st May 1969 as Lord Plynlimmon (posh, eh?) in Plaintiff in a Pretty Hat by Hugh and Margaret Williams - the parents of my friend - actor Simon Williams. It is a theatre that has changed very little in the intervening years - I am glad to say - as far too often "improvements" can make theatres more "modern" at the same time as removing all the character and history of those wonderful old buildings. My dear friends Rod, Jane and Freddie - yes all of them - of Rainbow fame came to see the show in Richmond last week and were kind enough to say they enjoyed it. I knew Jane years ago and worked with Freddie in Canterbury in 1973, when we did Lion in Winter, Journey's End and Guys and Dolls together. I then took my children when they were young to see them in the Rod Jane and Freddie touring stage show and got to know them again. They are collectively and individually the nicest three people you could ever wish to meet. It was also lovely to meet up again with John Davies who directed War and Peace for the BBC in 1970/71. He and his wife came to see She Stoops on Saturday night and we had an Italian meal afterwards at which we reminisced about that exciting year working with a young Anthony Hopkins. David Conroy - the producer of War and Peace was planning to come to but he and his wife had lost their voices after chest infections and weren't able to make it. I sympathise with them. I spent most of Easter weekend playing cards and watching TV with my four daughters - all of whom chose to spend their Easter weekend with my wife and me - so we must be doing something right. It's probably my wife's cooking, rather than my sparkling wit! But I was a good and responsible actor and didn't go to watch Wycombe Wanderers play Stockport County this afternoon. The weather was appalling - typical Easter! And I thought that I would be in the dog house if I wrecked my voice cheering the Blues on in the freezing cold on Easter Monday afternoon. (It was a nil nil draw by the way - so we are clinging on in the play off zone - if you're interested. And I discovered a great website this week. You can increase your vocabulary while helping feed the third world. Check it out on www.freerice.com My best score was 52. See if you can beat me!! Happy Easter. | ||
