Who Do You Think You Are Kidding, Mr. Hitler?

Posted: 10 Jun 2008 12:29 PM CDT

I live in the United Kingdom, which is up there with the US and the rest of Europe as one of the most politically correct nations on this damn planet. I mean, we can't even call a black board a black board, just incase it incites racial hatred or offends anybody, for Pete's sake. I'm telling you, it's crazy. It's a flaming black board!

I'm saying that because what follows probably is pretty damn un-PC. Probably as un-PC as it can get. It's a video clip, taken from the film "Downfall" which features Adolf Hitler, sat inside his tiny little bunker days before his death/defeat, talking to his band of men and women. Of course, some clever dick (or, if that's offensive to male readers out there who are mighty proud of their dicks, I'll re-phrase that in as best a PC way as possible: "Of course, some clever male genetalia that dangles down, but aren't a pair of testes...") has re-edited the scene, with an added Torchwood twist.

The link is here.

Before anybody comments on the nature of Adolf Hitler and the atrocitites he caused, yes I'm well aware of history. I'm not making a joke of the hundreds of thousands... millions, even, that died during World War Two. Thankfully, I didn't live through that era. Hitler was a bastard, scum of the Earth - we all know that. This video isn't laughing with him; it's a bitch slap right in the middle of his face.

You don't wanna watch? That's fine by me, I'm not making you.

But it's funny as Hell ;)

Impossible Things

For me, one of the other improbable events if you sent this cartoon five years back in time is that it's now not unthinkable for there to be a Doctor Who reference in a modern American political cartoon...and it isn't Tom Baker.

That's as great a shock as any of the rest of it!

Example of Britain's Infiltration of American Culture...

Posted: 10 Jun 2008 12:52 AM CDT

Of course I know that this is a Torchwood Blog, but as Torchwood news is light this week, it gives us a chance to consider just how far Doctor Who and BBC programming generally has really become embraced by Americans in the last 20 years... In 1988, The majority of Americans might have been able to identify Tom Baker as "Doctor Who," but unless they were fans of "Public Television" they would be more likely to identify Benny Hill or Monty Python's Flying Circus than our favorite Time Lord...

In these 20 years, many British programs have made their way over the pond... Some remade such as Who Wants to be a Millionaire, The Office, Whose Line is it Anyway? and soon... Life on Mars. Somehow mostly spared was the good Doctor and the adventures of his friends. With the Sci-Fi channel showing Doctor Who and HD-Net showing Torchwood, Americans are embracing the Doctor's world... (And yes, I know that Rupert Murdoch had that Doctor Who movie made for the Fox network, but he's Australian... So that doesn't count, Americans generally didn't like it anyways!)

Doctor Who in fact has become so well known in America that the good Doctor materialised this week onto a American liberal political cartoon that pokes fun at this week's news headlines. (For those of you on the east of the pond, think Labour Party...) His inclusion is actually designed to represent a time traveller, and most Americans got the joke exactly! To see Tom Tommorrow's This Modern World click on the picture below to see the whole cartoon. (Click on June 10th.)

So, what will it take for Americans to embrace Torchwood as strongly? Here's to finding out.

Tom Tomorrow's Tennant and TARDIS

Posted: 09 Jun 2008 07:33 PM CDT

It's not uncommon for British political cartoonists to cast politicians as Daleks or Cybermen, but it's far more rare for Doctor Who to be referenced in American media. But this week liberal American cartoonist Tom Tomorrow included the Tenth Doctor and the TARDIS in his weekly cartoon This Modern World, by way of making a comment about Barack Obama winning the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. The panel can be seen at right, and the full...
