Posted: 10 Jan 2010 01:12 PM PST A new fanzine dedicated to Doctor Who in comic strip form is being launched. Vworp Vworp! takes an affectionate look at Marvel/Panini's Doctor Who comic strips and the magazine that spawned them – Doctor Who Magazine. The first issue comes in two covers, the first a jam session between fourteen of the finest artists in Who comic history and the second is a nostalgic pastiche of a Doctor Who Weekly cover, designed by DWW's original editor, Dez Skinn. Full details can be found on the website, including ordering details. There is a Facebook Group for those interested.
Posted: 10 Jan 2010 11:30 AM PST From the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, new head honcho Steven Moffat provides his thoughts on the nomenclature for the new era of Doctor Who: “It’s Series Thirty-One of Doctor Who, and it’s Series One of Matt Smith’s Doctor, Those are both real numbers. I submit that ‘Series Five of Doctor Who’ means absolutely nothing unless you really believe that Matt Smith is the third Doctor. Everyone knows he’s the Eleventh Doctor so that means it’s definitely not ‘Series Five’. Whichever number you choose, ‘Series Five’ is the one that’s flawed.” “‘Series One’ is an exciting sentence. ‘Series Thirty-One’ is an awe-inspiring sentence. ‘Series Five’ is a boring sentence - and also a complete lie” Rumour has it that the DVD sets, etc. will be released as Doctor 11, Series 1. Apparently Moffat goes on in the DWM article to explain that BBC branding executives were eager for the change away from Series Five. I say “apparently” because my subscriber’s copy has arrived so I don’t know exactly what is being said (the above quote has been posted on the internet from someone lucky enough to have received their issue already). But I’m in near-total agreement with Steven Moffat - which should come as no surprise to anyone who noticed and got irritated at my regular Season 27, 28, 29, and 30 references over the years. The only place where I would quibble with Moffat is that I really think the year of specials we’ve just had (which, when put together, nearly totals the same length as a Sylvester McCoy season) should have counted as a “season” and we should really be on Series 32. But nice to see the show being treated as one entity on a more official level once again.

Posted: 09 Jan 2010 09:06 PM PST It is with great regret that we have to announce a delay in the release of our third Sherlock Holmes adventure, Holmes and the Ripper. Initially set for a January release, this full-cast adventure by renowned thriller writer Brian Clemens and starring our very own Nicholas Briggs and India Fisher, is now to be released in March. Nick is also the director and sound designer on the production. 'I'm afraid it's all entirely my fault,' he confesses. 'A combination of my much lampooned illness before Christmas, then another, really bad cold that started on Boxing Day and the bad weather in the UK this year has meant that I've not been able to meet the post production deadlines. I set off for the office last Monday, but the roads were terrible and I ended up having a minor accident. Luckily no bones broken. 'Anyway, before this starts sounding too much like "the dog ate my homework", I'd like to offer my sincerest apologies for the delay. My work schedule is such that we've had to delay the release until March.' A special, free Sherlock Holmes adventure, The Speckled Band, will also be available for all Big Finish subscribers to download in the coming weeks.
Posted: 09 Jan 2010 08:59 PM PST (Editors note to self - don’t mix Doctor Who with politics.)
