Posted: 11 Jan 2010 11:45 AM PST A sizeable contingent from the Doctor Who Blog (and several of our friends) were at the Bad Dog Theatre at Broadview and Danforth in Toronto to see the premiere of Doctor Whom, an improv show based on a television series you all might be familiar with. It was hilarious, exuberant fun. As with any improv show, it takes its cues from the audience and runs with their suggestions, but done through the imaginative landscapes Doctor Who offers, it provided 90 minutes of sheer mind-bending surreal hilarity, as the TARDIS took the Doctor, Violet and Captain Jack to a planet of taxidermy (in an adventure called “The Terror of Stuffing”). There were great jokes for the nerds (a stuffed Zygon!) and hilarious moments for the unschooled in Who. Add a superb cast and you have a brilliant way to spend a Saturday evening. Doctor Whom is playing at the Bad Dog Theatre in Toronto for the next three Saturdays. For more information visit the show’s facebook page.

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 09:48 AM PST The leader of Britain's Conservative Party has brushed off criticism from David Tennant. Talking to Richard Bacon on BBC Radio Five, Cameron said "You can't win them all". He added "You're never going to win over everybody. I definitely believe there's no point trying to win over everyone. Say what you think, say what you believe in, say what you believe needs to be done and if people will come with you they will come with you." Cameron said he had not watched much of the latest series but grew up with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker as the Doctor. TVshowsonDVD reports that is reporting that both the 1975 original and 2008 remake versions of Terry Nation's Survivors are planned for DVD release in the USA. According to the report the new version of Survivors, which featured Freema Agyeman, will be released after both seasons air in the US. As NBC in the US scrambles to find programming to fill its 10 p.m. weeknight prime time slot following the cancellation of The Jay Leno Show, several sources report that one option before NBC is to fast-track production of Rex is Not Your Lawyer, the proposed lawyer series starring David Tennant. Some subscription copies of this month's Doctor Who Magazine appear to have been delayed by the transport problems caused by the current cold weather in the UK. The Magazine was sent out last Wednesday, however many have still not received it. DWM assures readers that the magazine is on its way and should be with subscribers shortly.

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 08:07 AM PST Despite the passing of time, it seems that some people just can’t deal with change. Over 12 months after the accouncement of the casting of Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and several weeks after his first appearance, hardcore David Tennant fans (I’m reluctant to call them Doctor Who fans) continue to cry from the prams, [...]

The Regeneration of Doctor Who Posted: 11 Jan 2010 05:57 AM PST The event, which took place at BAFTA last month, features Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner talking about their 6 year working relationship as executive producers on Doctor Who and the terrifying responsibility of bringing the show back to a new generation of viewers with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant in the lead role. Amongst a range of illuminating insights, the pair discussed their attempt to reinvigorate of the Saturday night prime time slot, the emergence of BBC Wales as a major player on the production landscape and explored why the character of the Doctor is such an extraordinary figure for writers to work with.

Posted: 11 Jan 2010 03:07 AM PST Several factors are still adversely affecting our mail order service this month. We expect that just about everyone in the UK is fed up of hearing how the bad weather has made everything grind to a halt; but unfortunately, Big Finish is no exception. The bad weather has prevented staff from getting to work and has prevented the Royal Mail from making collections. Orders received up until the 31st December 2009 have now all been processed and sent. The last minute rush of orders for the Short Trips books has also meant that some customers were ordering books which had gone out of stock. Refunds for those orders are being processed now. To give time for our mail order staff to catch up with the backlog of orders, the mail-out of our January releases will commence on Thursday 21st January. We offer our sincerest apologies for the delays this month. Rest assured that Gary and his team at the warehouse are working flat out to get things back on track. We will keep you updated in the coming weeks.

The Writer’s Tale - The Final Chapter Posted: 11 Jan 2010 12:15 AM PST On paper, the idea of publishing emails between a journalist and a Head Writer from a TV series might not seem to be the most exciting theme for a 700-page book. But when the journalist is Benjamin Cook and the writer Russell T Davies then the premise takes on a new exciting life and The [...]

Posted: 10 Jan 2010 08:07 PM PST The reviews continue to come in for Rob Shearman's short story collection, Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical, and the critics are still raving about it! The Guardian's review said of the tales: 'Short on plot, high on acute observation and telling detail, and always arresting, Shearman's stories are hard to categorise, a unique fusion of the literary and the fantastic'. Online magazine The Hub has awarded it the prize for 2009's Best Collection ('It's at least as good as his first collection, and contains the (deliberately) funniest love scene you will ever have read!') and christened Roadkill the best short story of the year, describing it as 'A story of love, lust, romantic fumblings and the misery of loneliness. Beautiful, just beautiful.' Rob will be publicising the book more over the course of the year, keep an eye on the news section to see when he reaches a town near you! In the meantime, you can discover more about Love Songs in Rob's interview with Fantasy Book Review.
