Politics In An Age of the Happiness Patrol Posted: 16 Feb 2010 12:08 PM PST Has the world gone bloody mad? Doctor Who was discussed on Newsnight, the BBC 2’s oh-so-serious nightly discussion of news and current affairs. They were talking about Doctor Who and politics… only not as espoused under the watch of Russell T Davies. No…this is about politics in Doctor Who, during the Sylvester McCoy era. A longer version, featuring the in-studio discussion between Tory MP Tim Collins and McCoy era script editor Andrew Cartmel can be found here which puts it in perspective a little more. And of course there’s Doctor Who News Page write-up. Okay, let’s recap: Doctor Who has become so popular that: a) Discussions of the politics of The Happiness Patrol, a story broadcast in 1988 and hitherto the provenance only of convention panels and Internet discussion is now on the bloody news. b) Statements made by Andrew Cartmel in an autobiography written six years ago has somehow become fodder for the tabloids. That’s just insane. Even more insane is that in the midst of all this discussion it’s only briefly alluded that during this time when Doctor Who was apparently bringing down the Thatcher regime via the medium of satire, dreadful design and a monster called “the Candyman”... Doctor Who was something like the 104th watched programme on television, and was regularly being pummelled in the ratings by Coronation Street. Fight the power.

Posted: 16 Feb 2010 07:03 AM PST "They don't call it plagiarism anymore, they call it homage" – Tom Baker Doctor Who has a fine heritage of pilfering from literary sources. The Frankenstein episodes and The Prisoner of Zenda knock-off are famous for being just that. But Doctor Who isn't literature. It doesn't even feel literary in the aforementioned stories. So what else feeds [...]

Vworp, Vworp! DWM tribute magazine Posted: 16 Feb 2010 12:42 AM PST Vworp, Vworp! DWM tribute magazine News Dated: 16/2/2010 A brand new DWM tribute magazine is now available to purchase - and it's made with great love! Vworp Vworp! is a not-for-profit, full-colour glossy 80-page perfect-bound fanzine that celebrates Doctor Who in comic strip form as well as, in our first volume, thirty years of Doctor Who Magazine (with the full blessing of the current team). Contributors include many media/Who luminaries, writers, artists, scholars and broacasters, as well as up and coming comic writers and artists. There's a full list on our website, as well as a number of preview pages. We've got two covers, the first a jam session between fourteen of the finest artists in Who comic history: Baxter Sullivan (1st Doctor), Roger Langridge (2nd Doctor), Ben Willsher (3rd Doctor), Adrian Salmon (4th Doctor), Dan McDaid (5th Doctor), Sean Longcroft (6th Doctor), Lee Sullivan (7th Doctor), Martin Geraghty (8th Doctor), Mike Collins (9th Doctor), Rob Davis (10th Doctor) and Leighton Noyes (11th Doctor), with cameos from Dave Gibbons, Dicky Howett and John Ridgway. The second is a nostalgic pastiche of a Doctor Who Weekly cover, designed for us by DWW's original editor, Dez Skinn, who has been our adviser throughout the project; the back cover's by 30 Days of Night, Fell and Wormwood artist Ben Templesmith. We've even got transfers and a Dalek scene to apply them to, drawn by Paul Grist, just like the first few issues of the Weekly! There are full details of Vworp Vworp! on our website, including ordering details. We've also got a rapidly growing Facebook Group. ** The Vworp, Vworp! team wants to add they are very low on the variant covers! Children of the TARDIS Revolution? Posted: 15 Feb 2010 01:48 AM PST Sylvester McCoy has found himself at the centre of controversy this week after he revealed in an interview that Doctor Who writers set out to bring down the reign of Margaret Thatcher during his time on the show back in the 1980s. The Seventh Doctor actor told The Guardian of the BBC’s alleged use of propaganda in the series, which [...] |
