Doctor Who and The Ice Warriors Posted: 02 Mar 2010 07:56 AM PST If, like me, you were born just before the video boom then you would have more than likely owned a set of Target novelisations. One of the best was Doctor Who and The Ice Warriors and this new BBC audiobook read by Jamie himself Frazer Hines is as exciting now as it was when the book was first released backing 1976. The Doctor, Jamie and Victoria land at the top of a scientific base in England where they have just unearthed an ancient Ice Warrior. Aliens from Mars, preserved in ice for centuries and now revitalised, the Ice Warriors feel ready to take over. Can the Doctor overcome these warlike Martians and halt the relentless approach of the ice glaciers? Adapted by the serials' original writer, Brian Hayles this audiobook book is a gripping piece of Doctor Who history unabridged from the original text. It does have a slightly slow start but by the end of disc 2 things have started to speed up for the Doctor and his companions. Though the story was originally conceived in 1967 this is Doctor Who at its freshest, anyone who doubts the validity of early Doctor Who should try this out. Though missing the theme tune the story is read with amazing gusto and care by Hines. His delivery is sharp and direct yet subtly capturing the vocal styles of the actors amazingly accurately. The addition of sound effects and atmospheric score by Simon Power also helps to increase the enjoyment of this release. The brief but informative sleevenotes from David J. Howe's celebrated release The Target Book enlighten us of the novels publication history. The reproduction of Chris Achilleos's original artwork helps set the tone of the release being enigmatic and slightly surreal. Tragically George Waring, the actor who played Arden in this adventure died recently. This review is respectfully dedicated to his memory. Running to 4 hours on 4 CDs, The Ice Warriors - originally a 6-episode TV serial broadcast in 1967 - is out now, with an RRP of £12.99 - but you can pick it up for £9.09 at Amazon!
Posted: 02 Mar 2010 07:16 AM PST More details from Matt Smith's Esquire interview have leaked out, with the Daily Mail focussing on the Eleventh Doctor's former life - as a promising footballer whose career was cut short by injury. The new Doctor Who was only 16 when his career was cut short, an injury that prompted him to take a greater interest in drama, something he had apparently done well at in school.
Quite a bit about this interview seems to have got out - I wonder if it's going to be worth buying the new issue of Esquire, out on Friday…?

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 06:36 PM PST Snippets of Matt Smith's interview in Esquire are appearing across the press today - hardly a surprise as appearing in the mens style magazine represents a fantastic opportunity for Matt to attract new viewers to Doctor Who. You can guarantee the tone of the interview is in sharp contract to one fund in Doctor Who Magazine or the Radio Times - and with gorgeous Karen Gillan as the new companion we won't be surprised to see similar interviews in women's fashion magazines in the coming weeks. Most notable in the interview are facts that Smith's mother encouraged him to go for the role after David Tennant announced his departure, as well as his individual sartorial style drawing comparisons with the Time Lord at university.
Meanwhile Smith was also quoted describing the Doctor's character and his audition performance - some possible hints here on how the Eleventh Doctor might behave/react.
Esquire is in newsagents this Friday, 5th March.
