Posted: 03 Mar 2010 08:27 AM PST The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine features yet more confirmation of episode titles for the coming series (although they can of course still change before transmission…) Thanks to Steven Moffat, we now know that the first episodes to be filmed back in June 2009 (episodes 4 and 5 in Series 5/Season 31) are called The Time of Angels and Flesh & Stone. Starring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan as the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond - not to mention Alex Kingston returning as Professor River Song - the episode titles seem to hint at the presence of the Weeping Angels, first seen in 2007's Blink. Meanwhile, episode six is likely to be called Vampires in Venice - written by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse, this story was filmed on location in Croatia. BBC Cutbacks - Who’s Affected? Posted: 03 Mar 2010 08:05 AM PST Doctor Who looks set to be cited as a rare example of BBC quality over the next few months as the public service broadcaster comes under fire yet again and the Director General Mark Thompson announces a possible cut in channels and web services. With BBC 6 Music already declared an unpopular choice for the axe - the BBC Asian Network less so, but I imagine there are as many people upset by this - and cutbacks announced on their web services, the BBC is a target for commercial media groups. With a General Election due this year and a strong chance of a Conservative government being formed, the broadcaster that we all pay for through a flat annual fee is being accused of impeding on the markets of its commercial rivals. In particular is our old friend Rupert Murdoch, a man who hopes to charge for online news in the near future (a possibility that will only lead to great competition for his bloated empire of robots).
The threat as far as Doctor Who fans are concerned is two-fold - web services are set to be cut by 25%, while there could be a reduction in magazines while might impact Doctor Who Adventures. With regards to the BBC website - already the official online home of Doctor Who has been stuck in a time warp for the best part of 2 years, is unwieldy to navigate and is full of useless and out of date news items that are bizarrely incestuous and ignore anything in the wider Whoniverse. Thanks to a successful 15 years since reforms to make the BBC more competitive, the irony that the same political party that put the broadcaster on the road to what it is today now wishes to castrate it is lost on few. If you wish to support the BBC against these cutbacks - that could be avoided by trimming US imports and slimming down event broadcasts, as well as potentially merging BBC 3 and 4, there is an online petition to the BBC Trust that you can sign today in advance of presentation in a few days time. Chicks Dig Time Lords (among others!) Posted: 03 Mar 2010 05:18 AM PST One of the more interesting Doctor Who non-fiction books to come out in a long time is Chicks Dig Time Lords: A Celebration of Doctor Who by the Women Who Love It. What makes this book very exciting is not just a book that proves that Doctor Who has female fans -- this has always been true in my experience -- but that it proves how varied Doctor Who fandom really is. It is especially nice to see stories about American fandom -- my Doctor Who story sits right besides Kathy Sullivan's and Jennifer Adams Kelley's. But there are also stories about UK fandom, Canadian fandom, and Australian fandom. This book also isn't just covering Doctor Who fans that have discovered Doctor Who in its latest incarnation, but fans from the "Wilderness Years" and during the original run. This is a book that feels free to be critical about Doctor Who, but in the way that only fans can be. I like this book not just for Doctor Who fans, but anyone interested in understanding fandom in all of its complexity and diversity. Definitely recommended!

Posted: 02 Mar 2010 11:30 PM PST Matt Smith has revealed how dedicated he is to Doctor Who, in the latest leaked snippet from his interview with Esquire (on sale Friday, 5th April). For him, there is no fear in rising to the challenge of taking on such a popular and iconic role - and let's face it, in the wake of David Tennant he's got quite a job to make the Eleventh Doctor as memorable as the Tenth. Smith's one aim when working on Doctor Who is, he says:
36 years ago a little known actor called Tom Baker took over from the most popular (and longest running) Doctor to date, Jon Pertwee - and became even more popular and longer running! Don't rule anything out in the worlds of Doctor Who - Matt Smith has every chance of being as popular as David Tennant.

Posted: 02 Mar 2010 10:27 PM PST Forget about buying Esquire this weekend - if you're interested in the interview with new Doctor Who Matt Smith, just surf the Google News pages to find what seems to be the entire chat chopped up and distributed across many online magazines! Latest news is that during the shooting of Womb last year (a bizarre genetics story in which Smith co-stars with Casino Royale's Eva Green) Smith threw himself into the role so hard he needed medical attention! A scene on a beach - a location in north Germany was used - lead to Smith getting very cold indeed… to the point he needed medical attention!
April's Esquire is on sale from Friday, 5th April in all good newsagents. (Via Daily Star)

Posted: 02 Mar 2010 06:50 PM PST As we reported a few weeks ago, a campaign to get eternally popular Doctor Who co-star Bernard Cribbins into the charts with one of his classic hits is gathering pace - and by purchasing a download of "Right Said Fred" next week you can help! Co-ordinated by comedia Charlie Ross, the campaign requires that as many people as possible purchase a download of the comic track cetween the 7th and the 12th March for inclusion in that weeks charts, announced on Sunday, 14th March. "Right Said Fred" is probably the most famous song of Cribbins' 1962 pop career - produced by George Martin (then better known for producing comedy records by The Goons than the Beatles) the track wasn't however his most successful. 1962 "Hole In The Ground" #9 Of course, getting the song into the charts nearly 50 years later would be a great achievement! Join the group today - and don't forget to download "Right Said Fred" next week!

Posted: 02 Mar 2010 05:55 PM PST The recent Bonham's auction of a massive collection of Doctor Who costumes, set components and props certainly caught the imagination of the media - Digital Spy have provided a full retrospective article of the event. While not including a full summary of sales, the article takes a supposedly humourous look at the day with the odd pithy comment thrown in to try and amuse. Most interesting about the event is the breadth of the lots - stuff from the recent series rubbing shoulders with classic series material. For instance, while a white and gold Imperial Dalek from Remembrance Of The Daleks was sold for £15,600 and a complete Cyberman costume from Silver Nemesis went for £9,600, it cost £3,120 for Kylie's waitress outfit from Voyage of the Damned - less than the £3,360 paid for Sarah Sutton's Nyssa outfit from 1982's Castrovalva! Probably the lot with the least impressive value however was the comparative bargain of the Torchwood SUV:
