Posted: 09 Mar 2010 12:44 PM PST For those that follow me on Twitter, may know that I sometimes use AudioBoo to record short audio reports while on the road. It is usually while attending a conference or convention or some other event, though not limited to such. (If you want to know more about AudioBoo, back in 2008, I posted this blog about AudioBoo: Boo! AudioBoo! Mini Mobile Podcasting!) This year's Gallifrey One convention (Gallifrey Blackjack 21) was no exception. |

Posted: 09 Mar 2010 10:12 AM PST TV Tonight, Australia’s leading TV blog, has today revealed the date on which the forthcoming series of Doctor Who will begin transmitting in Australia! The series will commence on ABC1 on Sunday April 18th at 7:30PM with The Eleventh Hour, which will see the Eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith, getting to know his new body, and also meeting his new companion, [...] |
Doctor Who Theme on Player Piano Posted: 09 Mar 2010 08:48 AM PST I'm constantly amused by different versions of the Doctor Who theme. |
Posted: 09 Mar 2010 08:45 AM PST In his recent interview with The Guardian - in which he declares that co-star Karen Gillan is "a beautiful woman" - Eleventh Doctor actor Matt Smith also described her as "mad". To be precise, he described her in a way many might tag one of his predecessors, Tom Baker - "mad as a box of cats"…
Certainly some of the trailer footage from New Year's Day reveals an actress who seems to pull of "kooky" in a wholly British way - of course, we can only speculate for the next 4 weeks… meanwhile, there's plenty to read in the interview on the Guardian website which will interest any fan of Doctor Who and young British actors in general. So if you get the chance, please, please, PLEASE take the time to read the Matt Smith interview in The Guardian! |
Posted: 09 Mar 2010 08:00 AM PST Matt Smith's interview with The Guardian over the weekend revealed a few hints as to the character of the Eleventh Doctor, and a little about Amy Pond. If you haven't had a chance to take in the full interview, it's among our favourite links of the last few months - if you're too busy, however, Digital Spy have taken the time to pick a few bits out. According to Smith, the Eleventh Doctor is "reckless":
A quick view of episodes such as The Parting of the Ways and The Waters of Mars reveals that the Ninth and Tenth Doctors could both be described accurately as "reckless" - interestingly they waited until towards the end of their incarnations. While not an entirely new concept for the character, it will be interesting to see just how far the series goes with this element. |
Posted: 09 Mar 2010 07:20 AM PST Following Matt Smith's recent appearance in Esquire magazine, a wonderful piece of promotional synchronicity has seen lovely Karen Gillan joining her Doctor Who co-star in the pages of a glossy fashion magazine. The Amy Pond actress is currently appearing in the pages of InStyle magazine, and looking pretty superb if the images on the publications website are anything to go by! InStyle also features an exclusive interview with the actress in which Gillan reveals that the only person who knew about her role as Amy Pond was her boyfriend - she only let her mum know an hour before the announcement! Karen Gillan also likes to spoil herself, it seems.
£2.55 on a handbag? Typically, Karen Gillan is a Scot… |
Matt Smith - Reading Politics? Posted: 09 Mar 2010 06:54 AM PST There was a great interview with Matt Smith last week in The Guardian - we'll be bringing a few snippets chosen by other outlets over the next few hours, but in the meantime, here's Kasterborous' own favourite quote from the Eleventh Doctor Who star. Following discussion of Smith's release by Northampton Town after a back injury and his subsequent academic success, talk turns to university, and one of his possible degree subjects - politics!
It is a great interview with the young Doctor Who star - however there is a downside to it. A reference to his first barnstorming appearance at the conclusion of The End of Time leads to talk of negative comments from blogs and a crestfallen 10 year old friend of the interviewer. Smith shouldn't be worried - David Tennant received similar negative vibes and tirades by anonymous bloggers nearly five years ago. Kasterborous has a good feeling about the Eleventh Doctor… |
Who wins Best TV Drama at TRIC Awards! Posted: 09 Mar 2010 06:31 AM PST Doctor Who has recieved yet another gong to add to its ever-growing collection, after the series was named as the Best TV Drama Programme at this year’s Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards! Although it faced tough competition from Doc Martin (ITV1) and Shameless (Channel 4), it managed to reign supreme at the ceremony, which was [...] |
Posted: 09 Mar 2010 06:10 AM PST Karen Gillan and Matt Smith have both been snapped extensively over the past few days, with a snap late last week of one of the Doctor Who stars causing a bit of a stir in The Sun. Wielding a plate of fish, Karen Gillan - as Amy Pond - was apparently wafting away the odour of the popular seaborne animal. However, we're not sure why. Fish - as you might know - are mighty tasty, and when in good or seasoned condition smell a bit better than raw meat. However both fish and meat smell pretty strong when they're off. And if you thought the above was pretty pointless, howabout this - The Sun described the scene being shot last week as "wacky". Wild and ker-azee, huh? (Read the original item online at The Sun. Note, you will have to search Google for the article as we do not link directly to News Corporation websites) |
Posted: 09 Mar 2010 05:25 AM PST Popular cult actor James Marsters - best known as Spike from the Buffy The Vampire Slayer show, and best known to Torchwood fans as Captain John Hart - has revealed that he is ready and waiting for the word from Russell T Davies for a possible appearance in a possible Torchwood Series 4. Speaking to ChicagoNow.com largely about his role in the new Battlestar Galactica spinoff Caprica, Marsters revealed that he'll even accept a minor role.
Fans are eagerly awaiting final confirmation of Torchwood Series 4, which despite the huge success of the five-part daily serial Children of Earth in 2009 has yet to be announced. |

Posted: 05 Mar 2010 09:08 AM PST This week saw filming taking place for the seventh and last block of the new series, for episodes 7 and 11. The beginning of the week saw the crew out in a village near St. Athan, whilst the latter half has been spent back on the streets and parks of Cardiff. Filming on the 1st saw the TARDIS parked up outside a house; scenes witnessed included a number of elderly people seen to carry items into the house, and the Doctor attempting to access it through a window. Amy was said to be held inside. Filming over the course of these two days have involved the Doctor staying at a house as a lodger with characters played by guest stars James Corden and Daisy Haggard. Thursday concentrated on scenes at their house (filmed on Westville Road, Cardiff), with scenes of running from the house, some football antics between Matt Smith and James Corden during the day, and in the evening with the Doctor examining 'junk' (believed to be components for the 'alternative' TARDIS console as designed from the Blue Peter competition). Friday, on the other hand, involved the Doctor engaged in a game of football at Victoria Park in Cardiff; Paul Mount and Ryan Farrell report: Paul: Matt Smith and James Corden, in football rig, are, with a full team, playing football. The Doctor's clearly very good at this and he scores a spectacular goal. The rest of the team go nuts. The 'crowd' (ie about six onlookers!) chant "Doc-tor! Doc-tor!" as he scores. the triumphant Doctor runs around, shouting, alternately "I love this game!" or "What a game!" Ryan: The Doctor's team won! They all pick him up and he says "please, you're too kind. I feel like the emperor!". They've moved and now Matt has his tweed coat over his kit. Greenscreen being set up. Confidential are here too. Matt was having a right laugh! He went right up to the camera and said something like "Matt Smith. The Doctor. Defender". He seems to be getting on with James Corden off camera. By the way, Matt knows what he's doing because he originally aspired to be a professional footballer before he had an accident. He played for Leicester under 21s I think. I'd say this scene was written with Matt in mind. Later, a scene was filmed of the Doctor exiting the TARDIS (believed to take place at the start of the adventure). |
Posted: 05 Mar 2010 04:33 AM PST BBC Worldwide have announced that they now fully own DVD distributor 2|entertain, the company closely associated with the release of Doctor Who DVDs over the last six years. The fate of the company has been uncertain since BBC Worldwide's partner Woolworth went into administration back in 2008. John Smith, CEO, BBC Worldwide, said: I am pleased that we have finally concluded these negotiations, and have secured the future of 2|entertain. This comes as good news for a variety of stakeholders. 2|entertain's retail partners know it is now backed by a stable owner. Consumers can continue to enjoy BBC content on DVD in their own homes. The independent production sector already works closely with 2|entertain. And licence fee payers will continue to benefit from 2|entertain's contribution to BBC Worldwide, which helped us return a total of £153m to the BBC in the last financial year. Paul Dempsey, CEO of 2|entertain and Managing Director, BBC Worldwide Home Entertainment, added: The 2|entertain business has not been distracted by the events of the past 18 months, continuing to deliver impressive results. Under full BBC Worldwide ownership, it now looks forward to a more settled period and playing an important role in BBC Worldwide's future plans. |

Companion Chronicles Season Five Posted: 04 Mar 2010 10:22 PM PST Big Finish has revealed that Andrew Smith, the writer of the 1980 TV story Full Circle, is to pen a forthcoming release in the Companion Chronicles series. The fifth season of the Chronicles begins in July, kicking off with The Guardian of the Solar System by Simon Guerrier, which stars Jean Marsh as Sara Kingdom. "The clue is in the title," says producer David Richardson. "Yes, the story brings back Mavic Chen, the spectacular villain from The Daleks' Masterplan, who once again is out to fulfil a grand scheme and will be putting the Doctor, Sara and Steven in dire peril. "This story actually brings our first Sara Kingdom trilogy to an end," he divulges. "And it's a very emotional finale – be warned!" Echoes of Grey follows in August, with Wendy Padbury reprising the role of Zoe Heriot. The script is written by John Dorney, and features the 1969 team of the Second Doctor, Zoe and Jamie. September sees the release of Find and Replace by Paul Magrs, in which Katy Manning returns as Jo Grant. "And Katy's not just playing Jo," Richardson reveals. "She's also playing the outrageous time traveller Iris Wildthyme too! And, just to top it all, we've got Alex Lowe back as Huxley, the mysterious narrator from Verbatim Six – a character who made a huge impression in last season's Ringpullworld." October's release, The Invasion of E-Space, is penned by the aforementioned Andrew Smith and performed by Lalla Ward. "I was at a convention in Glasgow last year, and Andrew and I got chatting," says Richardson. "He was very keen to write a Companion Chronicle, and I thought it would be fun to set it during the E-Space Trilogy, and feature the Fourth Doctor, Romana and Adric." Popular senior citizen companion Evelyn Smythe returns for A Town Called Fortune in November, which is written by Paul Sutton. "We've had a huge number of requests for the return of Evelyn," says the producer, "and I can promise you'll hear much more of her in 2011. This story is an historical adventure, which takes Evelyn and the Sixth Doctor into the Wild West during the Gold Rush era." |

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 03:14 AM PST Inside the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (issue 419, out today) newly promoted executive producer Nikki Wilson discusses the upcoming fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures: "After a hugely successful third year, in which ratings went up - a rare feat for television these days! - the fourth series has been planned for a long time, with scripts well underway, and all the regular cast rasy to return. It's a testament to them that the series has become so popular with young viewers. I can promise lots more thrills, scares and fun with enemies old and new, including the terrors of the Nightmare Man, the sinister Shansheeth, our first visit to an alien world, and even a dangerous journey back into history." Brian Minchin, former Doctor Who/Torchwood script editor is stepping into Wilson's shoes to become the series' fourth producer, following Susie Liggat ("Invasion of the Bane"), Matthew Bouch (all of series one, and now BBC Three's Being Human) and Nikki Wilson (series two/three, and Doctor Who's 2010 series). This very site reported on Clayton Hickman writing for the SJA well over two years ago. He posted on the now defunct Outpost Gallifrey soon afterwards that the story was 'nonsense' - guess something changed between then and now! I'm hearing whispers that this year's series [POTENTIAL SPOILERS!!] may feature appearences by the Weeping Angels, and one of the stories may serve as a sequel to the classic 1970's Doctor Who adventure "The Hand of Fear". Neither of these reports (sent in by two different readers) are confirmed at the mo, so take with a pinch of salt until evidence presents itself either way. Doctor Who Magazine #419 is out now, priced £4.20. Go, buy! |

Posted: 03 Mar 2010 10:35 PM PST Greetings all! Came back from LA a few days ago, after a cracking Doctor Who convention at Gallifrey 2010! There were SJA guests a'plenty, and I even managed to hug Phil Ford, writer behind The Lost Boy eppy in series one! Hell yes. Even got to have a chat with Paul Tamms and Bob Baker, the co-creators behind the new K9 Series! And boy do we have a lot of gossip about what's coming up on the show before it airs on Disney XD next month, woo! I've also got to pen down a Sarah Jane-related product review. But whilst you're waiting for all that, perhaps this'll pique your interest in the meantime? ----------------------------------------------------
