Planet of the Dead Blu-Ray Goes to Helen Lesser

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 04:04 PM PDT

Last month we stated we would give a brand new unopened copy of Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead in HD on Blu-ray to randomly selected Podshock Supporting Subscriber (Planet of the Dead Blu-Ray Going to a Supporting Subscriber). We promised we would announce the winner at our seasonal meet up on Second Life on the 20th of February (Pre-Gallifrey 21 Meet Up on Second Life). We did. The subscriber we randomly selected was Ken Okel. (Ken was not present at the meet up, but we stated that you need not be present for it).

After contacting Ken, we learned that he had just bought a copy of Planet of the Dead on BD, and offered us to give the disc to another subscriber that may need it. Fortunately, we had selected a runner up just in case something like this occurred. That person is Helen Lesser!

Moffat Interview in Radio Times

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 11:02 AM PDT

Steven Moffat appears in the new Radio Times ("The real master with television's toughest job") as he discusses the new series of Doctor Who.

Steven Moffat in the Radio TimesWhile it might not have a Doctor Who cover, this is one issue of the Radio Times that will be hard to miss, with former model and "It" girl Sophie Dahl looking radiant on the front cover.

Here's what the Radio Times would let us publish:

Steven Moffat is Doctor Who's new "showrunner" – the flashy American term, adopted over here, to describe a visionary writer/producer/TV seer who is charged with the creative evolution of a big series.

So what grand monsters (and tiny terrors) can we look forward to this series? Moffat doesn't want to give too much away, but the new Doctor, Matt Smith, and his companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) are inevitably up against foes old and new, with a star-dusting of special guest-scarers, including Helen McCrory as "a sexy scary vampire-woman and Sophie Okonedo…" here Moffat pauses. As what? "I couldn't possibly say. But she was in the trailer for the new series, and nobody noticed!"

The new Radio Times, covering 20th - 26th March 2010, is available in shops today.

James Corden Leaks Dialogue

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 08:47 AM PDT

James Corden appeared appeared on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross last week - with a Doctor Who script in his pocket that the perky host forced him to read a line from!

Corden is currently filming an episode of Doctor Who on location with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan - a fact that was leaped upon by the host.

Whether or not the moment was scripted, it was still amusing to see the writer and actor hiding the script from "Wossy" - see the following clip to see exactly which spoilery line he revealed!

Remember, Matt Smith appears on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross on Friday, March 26th!

The Poison Pen

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 08:06 AM PDT

Comedian and actress Catherine Tate has found herself in the press recently, after it emerged that the former Doctor Who co-star was the target of poison pen letters.

Apparently Tate - who appeared as Donna Noble in the episodes The Runaway Bride, Partners in Crime through to Journey's End and The End of Time Part One and Part Two - was subjected to hate mail which was later passed to the police by her husband, Twig Clark.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We can confirm that police received a complaint from a 35-year-old man on Sunday, 17 January, regarding malicious communications.

"Detectives from Richmond-upon-Thames are investigating."

Anyone taking the time to find the address of a celebrity and then writing to them in such a manner should be treated with pity - let's hope that Catherine has been able to put this behind her and that the offending individual is found and looked after accordingly.

No Ticket to Ride

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 07:35 AM PDT

The Chase and The Space Museum on DVDAccording to GallifreyNewsBase, the short clip of the Beatles from episode one of The Chase is set to be available only on Region 2 DVDs - resulting in buyers of the classic Doctor Who release outside of Europe having the scene snipped.

Master copies of the discs for use overseas have been prepared with a small edit to remove the moment in which the Beatles - Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison - perform "Ticket to Ride" on an edition of Top of the Pops, as seen on the Time-Space Visualiser in the TARDIS.

The scene leads directly into a another within the Time-Space Visualiser in which the TARDIS crew of The Doctor, Barbara, Ian and Vicky discover that they are being tracked and hunted down by the Daleks - the "chase" of the story's title.

It is unclear how the edit will work in context, and is of course disappointing for fans outside of the UK and Europe.

Scheduled for a UK release on March 1st, The Space Museum and The Chase has an RRP of £29.99 - however you can preorder it right now from Amazon for just £17.98!

Amy Pond Love Stuff

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 02:45 AM PDT

Karen GillanNew Doctor Who co-star Karen Gillan spoke to The Observer recently, and in the interview published at the weekend she revealed a brief snippet of the story between Amy Pond and the Eleventh Doctor.

We've all seen the original trailer for the new series, initially made available on the BBC's Official Doctor Who website following The End of Time - and quite clearly Amy Pond kisses the Doctor. However with River Song making at least one appearance, a fullblown Ninth/Tenth Doctor and Rose scenario looks as though it would be complicated, at the very least.

Karen Gillan gives little away when asked about the kiss, but has this to say:

"She has a love for him, a really deep love for him. But not romantic."

There is, however, more love than that going around - bizarrely, Karen Gillan is rather taken with her own character, as revealed in an exchange about Amy Pond's miniskirt.

I'm not sure exactly what the consequences of this might be, but it can't be safe.

"They originally wanted to put me in trousers, but I did say I'd like to wear a skirt because – you'll understand when you watch it. Actually I think I love Amy. I'm in love with her. I want to be her."

Um… you are her, Karen…

Eleventh Doctor Newsbiscuit

Posted: 14 Mar 2010 11:49 PM PDT

The new Doctor Who is the subject of a new article on the spoof news site NewsBiscuit.com, in which the youthful looking Time Lord complains that no one is taking him seriously

You'll have to visit the superb Newsbiscuit site yourself for the full story - but you might be able to get the gist from this complaint attributed to the Doctor:

'Last week I tried to warn the UN Security Council that a comet that was about to hit the Earth, but they just told me 'That's interesting son, run along now and leave saving the planet to the grown-ups.'

Of course, appearances can be deceiving. While looking young, Matt Smith also looks suitably bonkers for the role of the Eleventh Doctor, and while Newsbiscuit's article is amusing, we're certain he's going to be a huge hit.

The Eleventh Hour Information

Posted: 14 Mar 2010 07:39 PM PDT

The Eleventh Hour is approaching

The BBC have released both the start time and programme information about The Eleventh Hour, the first episode of Doctor Who to star Matt Smith!
Co-starring Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, the new Doctoor Who series is the first to be overseen by new head writer Steven Moffat and fellow Executive Producers Beth Willis and Piers Wenger.

Sat, 3 Apr 2010, 18:25 on BBC One (London only)
The Doctor has regenerated into a brand new man, but danger strikes before he can even recover. With the TARDIS wrecked, and the sonic screwdriver destroyed, the new Doctor has just 20 minutes to save the whole world - and only Amy Pond to help him.

The first episode of the new series is set to clock in at 60 minutes, which might account for the earlier than usual start time. Although the listed timing is stated as "London only" is is likely the time will be the same throughout England, with only Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland prone to alteration.

Doctor Who…At The BBC: A Legend Reborn

Posted: 14 Mar 2010 06:43 PM PDT

This all-new compilation of interviews and behind-the-scenes pieces from the last few years of Doctor Who is the usual mixed bag of goodies we've come to expect from this series. Elisabeth Sladen is once again on presenting duties with Andrew Pixley behind the material selection and linking script. Clips come mainly from BBC radio such as Go 4 It, Jo Whiley, Newsbeat and Simon Mayo. I won't reveal all that's covered just so you can listen out for some gems yourself.

Doctor Who... At the BBC: A Legend RebornFor starters we get to hear from Christopher Eccleston who was interviewed by Jo Whiley in 2005. Though she resorts to some rather lame questions ("Does the TARDIS have a toilet?") she's able to encourage some fantastic (pun intended) answers from the northern star. Christopher is on fine form, giving clues all the way as to how his Doctor would evolve through his tenure but makes sure he doesn't give too much away. He even comments of Rose's "love" for the Doctor. This is followed by the announcement of Eccleston's resignation from the role only 5 days after the first episode was broadcast.

As you'd expect this 2-disc set covers Tennant's 10th Doctor more than Eccleston's 9th. Even though these pieces have broadcast over the last five years I was surprised by how much I'd forgotten. Did you download any of those extra episodes made specifically for Season 2 and designed to be viewed on your mobile? Those so-called TARDISodes?

Peter Fincham (Controller of BBC1 in 2006) pops up to talk to Simon Mayo about the Doctor Who Christmas Day episode, The Runaway Bride. Freema Agyeman also drops in and chats to Simon Mayo who seems to be quite excited to meet her. Freema's enthusiasm is wonderful; you can almost hear her smile. She's always been a favourite of mine, a cruelly underused character who deserves just one more trip in the TARDIS.

The disc doesn't have much comedy but Mitch Benn's song from The Now Show, originally broadcast April 2007 is a stand-out moment. Though a football ditty it's use of Doctor Who is ingenious and we get to almost hear Lis say a naughty word!

This is wonderful nostalgic trip into recent Doctor Who history. It may not be the most played disc in your collection but it is fun.

Doctor Who at the BBC: A Legend Reborn is out now, and has an RRP of £13.99, however you can purchase it from Amazon for just £6.49!
