Official Site Revamped!

New look official Doctor Who website! We've been waiting for this for literally months (ever since the previous version got revamped into a poor attempt at a blog for Dreamland) but the BBC have finally come up trumps with a redesigned Doctor Who website!

The new address is www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw - get it bookmarked!

Complete with a countdown clock to The Eleventh Hour (which at the time of writing is counting down to this Saturday…) the new look site has a cool banner, a new colour scheme and fits into the current and beta versions of the BBC website.

Most importantly, the site currently holds some exclusive features - Matt Smith and Steven Moffat video interviews, while fans of previous Doctors can access content from 2005-2010 via the "Past Series" link.

Curiously, there is no obvious way to access content covering 1963-2005.

Anxious fans without digital TV will be happy to know that the first minute of The Eleventh Hour appears on the revamped official site this Saturday at 6.25pm!

What do you think of the new-look BBC Doctor Who website? Have you found the link to the classic series content? Let us know below!

Matt Smith - “Funny and friendly”

Posted: 24 Mar 2010 11:38 PM PDT

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan star in Doctor WhoA pair of young sisters are among the guests in Matt Smith's first outing as the new Doctor Who - appearing in The Eleventh Hour was good enough to get the pair into their local paper

Eden and Merin Monteath are from Wing in the Leighton Buzzard area and it seems they were sent the scripts quite early - they didn't know if they would be working with David Tennant or the new Doctor, Matt Smith!

"The whole event was quite nerve-racking, but Matt was really great he was funny and very friendly, and made the girls feel totally at ease."

They're no strangers to stardom, however - both Eden and Merin actively attend Cheddington Youth Drama Club while Merin is also currently starring in a Coleman's chicken fajitas advert on TV.

While the girls are unable to give anything away, the event proved what a small world it is - while their parents and grandfather are all actors, the headmaster of one of the girls also taught Matt Smith…

"It turns out that Eden's headmaster at Linslade Middle School had also taught Matt when he was at school in Northampton! Matt was really 'blown away' that they all knew each other and said to say 'hi' to Mr Bromley!"

"We have been sworn to secrecy about the story and the part we play in it and it will be a great relief not to have to keep the secret any longer!"

Don't forget - The Eleventh Hour will be aired on Easter Saturday, April 3rd!

What’s in an Age?

Posted: 24 Mar 2010 10:00 PM PDT

Matt Smith is the youngest ever Doctor Who
So, exactly how much does age matter?

Since the casting of Matt Smith, the youngest Doctor yet, there has been a great deal of hoo-hah about his age. Even Steven Moffat, when making the announcement, evidently felt obliged to made heavy weather out of Smith's combination of youthfulness and old age, as if to assuage the old guard that the series wasn't about to become Skins in space.

However, despite the case for the prosecution being characterised by cries of "too young" (or even "too ugly"), you have to wonder how the casting of a substantially older Doctor would go down. We all know the disapprobation Smith's casting has received will inevitably die down as fandom 'unexpectedly' realises, "I wasn't sure at first, but now he's my favourite Doctor!".

There is an undeniable trend toward youthfulness in the media, giving a corresponding inevitability to the casting of a twentysomething Time Lord. Quatermass has been supplanted by programmes like Primeval, with 'hot' young casts. Robin Hood has gone from a 39-year-old Douglas Fairbanks, or even 36-year-old Kevin Costner, to a mid-twenties Jonas Armstrong. Even Bond villains have gone from the likes of Donald Pleasance and Charles Gray to Robert Carlyle. An indicator of our societal shallowness? Well, yes, probably.

Not that there's anything inherently awful about younger interpretations of recurrent characters, or inspirational figures, but you'd have to look to geriatric crimefighters like Miss Marple or Jessica Fletcher to find older actors in even broadly similar roles (and Murder, She Wrote is all repeats anyway).

The First Doctor was an older actorPerhaps this trend toward youthfulness is symptomatic of storytelling shorthand, and the syncopated approach to modern TV – faster, younger… better? Whatever the reasons, it's clear that never in a million years would we get a twenty-first century equivalent of William Hartnell fronting a teatime show. Though Steven Moffat has gone on record saying he was originally all for an older Doctor, he was almost certainly thinking more along Christopher Eccleston lines. The campaign for Ian McKellan as the Twelfth Doctor starts here.

What's most ironic is the short-sightedness concerning the oldest of Doctors, the First. Because though Hartnell's portrayal is very much that of an old man, he also originated the incongruous agelessness with which Steven Moffat ushered in the Eleventh Doctor. All the Doctors have their share of the childlike, but perhaps most plainly it's there in Hartnell's often overlooked warmth, and giggling, impish sparkle. Just think of his glee when he realises his part in the burning of Rome…

Such a figure wouldn't play well with the upper echelons of the BBC in the current media climate. Given that children's TV presenters have gone from 'favourite uncle' figures of the Johnny Ball variety, to the permatanned Andrew Hayden-Smith, it's as if the media has made us so terrified that everyone over 35 is a paedophile that there's a genuine abhorrence of presenting children with substantially older role models.

While this general marginalisation of visible older characters on TV and film is upsetting, in terms of the Doctor specifically, there is no reason to think younger is worse. After all, there have been three 'young' Doctors before anyway! And, had fandom had its act together in the seventies, the casting of Tom Baker would no doubt have caused widespread outrage. The whippersnapper!

Given the inherent changeability of the character, it seems absurd that anyone's really upset about the prospect of a Doctor barely out of short trousers. (Maybe it's just that no-one likes to be older than the Doctor?) It's true there is an authority about him which seems to be synonymous with age, but perhaps the real reason is that we're worrying what this means for the future – will this set a precedent for a run of interchangeably young, trendy Doctors? Given that, in retrospect, the Ninth Doctor's unprecedented bovver boy leather jacket didn't lead to a spate of hyper-masculine Doctors, it doesn't look like we have anything to worry about. Yes, Matt Smith is young. Fortunately, it also looks like he will be great.

SFX on The Eleventh Hour

Posted: 24 Mar 2010 06:37 PM PDT

Behind the rest of the press pack, SFX gave The Eleventh Hour an online thumbs up this week, giving the new Doctor Who time to breathe before delivering their verdict.

The Doctor and RoryThe popular sci fi magazine - whose website has recently experienced its own long-overdue regeneration - give little away about the plot, but do make the following observations:

*Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith is "impish, occasionally school mastery, often slightly unhinged"

*The Eleventh Hour itself is "a perfect blend of pure, unashamed adventure and the genius ideas that characterised Moffat's previous Who scripts…"

*The night-time shooting has a wonderful fairytale quality to it

*Oh and what's more, The Eleventh Hour is the "best season opener since Who's 2005 return"

Daily Mail objects

Posted: 24 Mar 2010 11:57 AM PDT

The Daily Mail has taken exception to the length of Amy Pond's skirt in the upcoming series of Doctor Who.

Writing in the Femail section, columnist Allison Pearson displays a woeful ignorance of the series when she asks "since when was Doctor Who's assistant supposed to be sexy?" and makes a plea to keep Doctor Who as family TV.

As any Doctor Who fan could tell her, the Doctor has a long tradition of travelling with sexy companions in short skirts which dates right back to the sixties.

What's next she asks, "Cybermen become Cyberchicks with metal boobs?" Perhaps she should view Torchwood's Cyberwoman.

Hack of the Week!

Posted: 24 Mar 2010 10:14 AM PDT

Amy Pond - sexy, and played by Karen GillanA bastion of Olde Englande, morality and sympathising with fascists, the Daily Mail has a unique place in British culture - just like Doctor Who.

But while Doctor Who is generally loved and appreciated, the Daily Mail is largely ridiculed - and columnists like Allison Pearson don't exactly help matters. This week, she took umbrage with Amy Pond's mini skirt.

"Initially, they wanted me in trousers, just because of the practicality of running around,' explains Karen.

'But I wanted the miniskirt because I think it really suits Amy's sassy character.' Matt Smith describes her as 'the sexiest companion that's ever lived'.

Now, this statement on Karen Gillan's interpretation of Amy Pond has got Allison Pearson of the Daily Mail a little mixed up. She has reacted with the most insane response:

Since when was Doctor Who's assistant supposed to be sexy? They're meant to be one of the boys, running around saving distant worlds.

Is it too much to ask that family TV remains the one universe yet to be invaded by nuts magazine?

Zoe Heriot's arse

Presumable Ms. Pearson has never seen Doctor Who. If she has, she certainly hasn't seen Michelle Ryan in a catsuit, Lalla Ward in a school girl outfit, Billie Piper in a tight Union Flag t-shirt, Freema Agyeman in anything, Mary Tamm in a furry white "ice queen" outfit, Katy Manning in most of her outfits as Jo Grant… or even the classic Wendy Padbury as Zoe Heriot, with a tight, glittery catsuit clinging to her shapely rear while she clings to the TARDIS console (above).

In fact, Ms. Pearson, could you be so good as to accept this Hack of the Week award, and perhaps stick to writing about what you know?

Paradise 5 - Reviewed

Posted: 24 Mar 2010 09:00 AM PDT

This months Big Finish Doctor Who Lost Stories is the best yet. Can I say that in a review? Sure I can, it's my review!

Paradise 5 was originally planned for The Trial of a Time Lord season and was to have featured Mel as the companion, but for unknown reasons it never happened. At the time writer PJ Hammond (Sapphire & Steel, Midsomer Murders) had only completed episode one – which became episode two on the audio release – part of one other episode and then the basics story outline. So when it came time to revive the story in audio form, Big Finish not only needed to adapt the script for audio, they needed to finish the script.

Paradise 5 coverDue to PJ Hammond being a rather busy writer these days (you may know his work on such recent series as Torchwood) Big Finish got permission to bring in a writer to help finish the script. PJ agreed and Andy Lane (A Thousand Tiny Wings) was the chosen one. Mr. Lane seems to have been the perfect choice, working off of Hammond's original notes, he not only completed the story but he also wrote a completely new episode one. A fact I did not know until after I finished the story and I can honestly say you can not tell.

Since the story was originally part of The Trial of a Time Lord season a new episode one was necessary as the story was book ended with trial scenes. And as mentioned above, Mel had to be written out and Peri put in her place. Perhaps these changes are what makes this story work so well for me. We are not exactly hearing a 100% 80's script, so we get some more modern story telling and modern characterizations.

Nicola Bryant is given some proper material to play with as an actress and some great character developments in Peri's life. The interactions between the Doctor and Per also seem less aggressive than the previous stories, which hopefully marks start of the changes in personalities we saw in Colin and Nicola's first and second TV seasons. If this is the case than that is a welcome touch to the Lost Stories as they will nicely bridge that character gap we saw on TV.

When listening to the story I was struck but how easily it could have slotted into a season of the new series (that is if it were Earth bound) as the story holds up in today's world. That could be due to Andy Lane again though as he made some changes to the aliens intentions to modernize the story. But overall the characters and their motives and interpretations would match anything the new series has given us.

Colin Baker clearly enjoyed himself with this story as well. It allowed his Doctor to come up with a plan and operate behind the scenes rather than just blundering into an accidental adventure. If only this is the Doctor they allowed us to have on TV, Colin might just have beat Tom baker's record.

All in all, the lost stories have been a joy to hear. To have this lost piece of history brought back to us in any form is a great pleaser to behold. And while I may have commented that they hold up to "New Series" story telling, they still hold true to their 1980's roots in that they Big Finish team have decided to use 80's sound effects and similar sounding music scores to add to that era's feel. Director Barnaby Edwards delivered a fantastic tale this month and really got the best out of each and every actor involved. Do yourself a favor and pick up this treat and enjoy a piece of history.

“Blood on his hands…”

Posted: 24 Mar 2010 08:38 AM PDT

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has given Wired.com an insight into why the Doctor is so intent on travelling on and on through time and space.

With just a few days left before The Eleventh Hour, there continues to be no respite in press coverage - Smith, Karen Gillan and Steven Moffat have all been providing interviews for various mainstream outlets, both print and online.

Smith gives an interesting view, one that has been touched upon by predecessors but never given the same clarity that he brings to the answer.

He builds up the answer too:

"I think the Doctor's got a lot of blood on his hands… I think if he didn't travel the universe he'd probably end up hanging himself.

"He's been doing this for 900 years, he's seen a lot of people die - he's let a lot of people die, he's had to, to save the greater good, and to save the universe…"

Gay Times with The 11th Doctor
News Dated: 24/3/2010

As Doctor Who returns with a new team and a new look this Easter, we eagerly stepped on board the TARDIS for Matt Smith's first ever interview with the gay press. And in 47 years of the show, he is the first Doctor to ever hold the cover spot of a gay magazine.

We also have unprecedented coverage of the new series, with exclusive content including the first ever interview with the latest addition to the cast, Arthur Darvill. We speak with the Doctor's assistant Karen Gillan, head writer Steven Moffat, executive producer Piers Wenger and a selection of other characters and creatives, both returning and new.

What's more, writer Gareth Roberts reveals that Matt Smith is set to appear pretty much naked in episode eleven, while costume designer Ray Holman tells us what kind of underwear the new Doctor prefers…

Matt Smith on his new role as the Doctor:

"What's gorgeous about it is that I get to sort of confess to my imagination every day. So I get to play around in a mad, imaginary world every day, which is limitless and timeless, and endless and boundless. You know, that is as close as you get to sort of magic really, I suppose, in many ways."

On being described by executive producer Steven Moffat as "Patrick Moore in the body of an underwear model":

"The thing is, right, I'll take Patrick Moore, fine. But I definitely haven't got an underwear model's body, no way, not on this schedule. All my gym's gone out the window. God no, I take that as a gross over-compliment to be honest. And also! When the hell has Steven Moffat seen me in my pants alone?"

April's issue of GT Magazine is on sale 24 March and also features exclusive ineterviews with Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg, plus Jamie Campbell Bower, Debbie Reynolds, Tracy-Ann Oberman and the real Phillip Morris.
