Questions on Tour

Posted: 26 Mar 2010 09:19 AM PDT

Next week, Doctor Who goes "on tour" with the BBC Outreach bus which will take Matt Smith and Karen Gillan (the new Doctor and his companion Amy Pond) around the United Kingdom for 5 preview screenings of The Eleventh Hour.

Kicking off on Monday, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan will visit five communities in Northern Ireland, Scotland and England, and with exclusive footage, photos and reports from the new BBC Official Doctor Who website anyone who isn't invited to one of these events (that's most of us!) can keep up with the Doctor Who roadshow.

The tour bus is scheduled to visit Belfast on Monday before proceeding to Inverness, the home town of the striking Karen Gillan. North East city Sunderland follows with the Manchester suberb of Salford next on the list before the tour concludes in Matt's hometown of Northampton on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, to add an extra layer of value to us unfortunates that won't be attending these screenings, the BBC's new look Official Doctor Who website is offering the chance to put questions to Smith and Gillan.

Fifth Anniversary

Posted: 26 Mar 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the revival of Doctor Who.
On 26 March, 2005, at 7 p.m., "Rose" was first broadcast on BBC1. The episode was written by Russell T Davies, and starred Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and Billie Piper as the eponymous Rose.
In total, almost 11 million viewers proved the naysayers wrong. Doctor Who proved to be a popular and continuing success, and Davies showed that family television viewing was alive and kicking.
In one week's time, the whole process starts again. On 3 April, 2010, at 6.25 p.m., BBC1 will broadcast Matt Smith's first full episode, "The Eleventh Hour".

Posted: 25 Mar 2010 11:07 PM PDT

Jonathan Ross welcomes Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith onto his Friday night chat show tonight.

In the programme, recorded earlier this week, Smith talks about becoming the Doctor:
My Doctor is clumsy, a little reckless, but becomes more assured as the series develops. I couldn't tell anyone for three months, To my mind it's the best part in British TV history. I spoke to David briefly, he said 'enjoy the ride'

Smith is joined on the programme by Emma Thompson and Professor Brian Cox. The programme is on BBC One/BBC HD at 10.35pm and will be shown on BBC America at a later date.

Past Guests, New Roles

Posted: 25 Mar 2010 07:45 PM PDT

Various past guest stars from Doctor Who have been linked to a wide range of projects lately, including Carey Mulligan and Sophia Myles.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, guest starred in The Lazarus ExperimentTop of the list however is the gorgeous Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Tish Jones, sister of Martha in several episodes of the 2007 series of Doctor Who including The Lazarus Experiment) who was spotted by Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks when she was playing Ophelia opposite Jude Law's Hamlet.

Hanks is set to star in and direct, Larry Crowne, and Mbatha-Raw looks set to land a major role in the film.

Sophia Myles - the eponymous Girl in the Fireplace from the 2006 series who also ended up "stepping out" with David Tennant for a short while - is set to star in the BBC spy series Spooks, filling the lead female role previously held by Hermione Norris and later Miranda Raison (Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks). Press speculation expects her abilities as a horse rider, swimmer and skier, not to mention her French and German skills - will be put to good use.

Meanwhile, Oscar nominated Carey Mulligan (Sally Sparrow in 2007's Steven Moffat classic Blink) has been linked to the lead role of Eliza Doolittle a new film version of My Fair Lady.

Nanny McPhee writer and star Emma Thompson revealed on BBC 5 Live:

"I think Carey is set to play it, yes.

"But we still don't know about [Henry] Higgins. I love Hugh [Grant] so I'd love him to do it, he might want to, he might not want to, so we don't know yet. But hopefully we'll make it later this year."
