Posted: 06 Apr 2010 12:40 PM PDT The new Matt Smith action figure has been released, and ITN have reported on how the figure was made. The character comes in two versions, one showing the Doctor's crash outfit as he appeared in the majority of The Eleventh Doctor and one showing the Doctor in his new outfit. Reviews on The Eleventh Doctor continue to be published and you can find a full list in Doctor Who in the Media. Neil Gaiman has blogged about watching the episode and his daughters reaction to the story. In his blog he reveals that the story he has written for Matt Smith's second series was originally planed for inclusion towards the end of the current series. He is now rewriting it to fit in its new slot.

Posted: 06 Apr 2010 07:30 AM PDT Written By James Goss, Dead Air is another Doctor Who story read by Tenth Doctor actor David Tennant. Dead Air arrives heralding the end of David Tennant's reign; for this reviewer it's about time. Don't get me wrong, Tennant has been exactly what the series needed to help it to grow. But his over-exposure across Christmas has dulled my view of his era. I know I'll love it again within the year though! At the bottom of the sea, in the wreck of a floating radio station, a lost recording has been discovered. After careful restoration, it is played for the first time – to reveal something incredible. It is the voice of the Doctor, broadcasting from Radio Bravo in 1966. He has travelled to Earth to search for the Hush – a terrible weapon that kills, silences and devours anything that makes a noise – and has tracked it to a boat crewed by a team of pirate DJs. With the help of feisty Liverpudlian Layla and some groovy pop music, he must trap the Hush and destroy it – before it can escape and destroy the world. James Goss has produced an excellent and very original story here. Tennant is in his acting element, delivering each line with smooth confidence and wonderful comic timing though his Liverpool accent is slightly too Brooksideish! This minor quibble aside it's an engrossing story that's complete with some of the sparkling dialogue the new series enjoys. The sparse use of sound effects to amplify the ever growing tension are inspired so full credit needs to go to Simon Hunt for such a sterling job. To me it's the audio equivalent of the Season 4 story Midnight in the claustrophobia stakes. Anyone who has yet to try the audiobook range could do worse than start here, it's a prime example of how to do this sort of entertainment. Well, that's it for the 10th Doctor Who on audio… for now. Here's raising a virtual glass of plonk to DT, so long and thanks for the memories. Dead Air is available now from Amazon for just £4.28!

Posted: 06 Apr 2010 04:48 AM PDT We watched the latest Star Trek film last night, and as I said when we saw it at the pictures - see the earlier post on that - what a cracking film it is! J J Abrams has managed to reinvent it so well. The plotting and characters are both new and yet seem to fit like a comfortable pair of shoes. Lovely performances from the main leads playing Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Chekhov, Uhura, Scottie and Bones, some great and awe-inducing effects pepper the film, and the intelligent plot is lovely to watch unfolding. We saw it on Blu-Ray and certainly the quality is there. It's also around 200 minutes long and yet never dragged or sagged. Testament to a good film methinks. Hopefully there will be more to come, but even if this stands as a one-off, it's a great little film, and sort of reaffirms ones faith in science fiction movies, especially after the exscrable Pandorium ...

Posted: 06 Apr 2010 03:58 AM PDT Toys R Us Event - Report News Dated: 6/4/2010 On the 5th April 2010, to celebrate the launch of the new Character Options Eleventh Doctor toys, Toys R Us at Brent Cross became a little part of Gallifrey. Outside the store and to the enjoyment of the crowd, they was invaded by a Cyberman and a Scarecrow from The Family of Blood. Activities at the event included face painting, mask making and a fancy dress contest judged by Doctor Who Adventures Editor, Moray Laing. You could even have your picture taken in the Time vortex! Roaming around the event looking for adventure were many children dressed as the 11th Doctor, complete with tweed jacket and red bow tie. One of the children, 7 yr old Hugo Matt, who has been a fan of Doctor Who for the last two years , thinks that Matt Smith will make a good doctor. The highlight of the event, however, was the ability to have your photo taken next to the Eleventh Doctor's newly regenerated Tardis and two Daleks from the upcoming episode Victory of the Daleks. There are two Eleventh Doctor toys now available to buy, the Eleventh Doctor's new Sonic Screwdriver and The Eleventh Doctor crash set - with not one, but two Matt Smith figures. One in his Raggedy doctor outfit and the other in his normal costume. Toy manufacturer, Character Options have decided to release two versions - one with a red bow tie and red striped shirt, the other with a blue bow tie and blue striped shirt. Below is a short video and some images taken at the event by our reporter, Chris Mapely: **To view video and images, check out the DWO News page** (Link: http://www.drwho-online.co.uk/news/) ** With thanks to Melissa Robinson at BBC Worldwide. Posted: 06 Apr 2010 02:40 AM PDT New from BBC Books this year comes The TARDIS Handbook from Steve Tribe, a look at the true star of Doctor Who! Everything you need to know about the TARDIS is here – where it came from, where it's been, how it works, and how it has changed since we first encountered it in a London junkyard in 1963. Including photos, design drawings, floor plans and instruction manuals from different eras of the series, this handbook explores the ship's endless interior, looking inside its wardrobe and bedrooms, its power rooms and sick bay, its corridors and cloisters, and revealing just how the show's production teams have created the dimensionally transcendental police box, inside and out. Out on May 27th, you can pre-order The TARDIS Handbook from Amazon for just £9.09!

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 10:49 PM PDT According to The Guardian, The Eleventh Hour's 7.6 million viewers (according to overnight figures) tuned into BBC One represented Doctor Who's lowest opening episode since the series returned in 2005. Despite the 35.3% audience share over the episodes duration (65 minutes from 6.20pm), The Guardian highlight twice that none of the previous series openers – Rose, New Earth, Smith and Jones and Partners in Crime - received figures as low as The Eleventh Hour. Yet the audience share speaks for itself – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban achieved a share of 17.2% during the first half of Matt Smith and Karen Gillan's debut, while Harry Hill's TV Burp had a share of 16%. However, as reported by GallifreyNewsBase, The Eleventh Hour received an audience Appreciation Index (AI) of 86, in contrast to The Christmas Invasion which scored 84, and Christopher Eccleston's first story, Rose, scored which managed 76. It is also worth noting of course the figures published in The Guardian are for BBC One. There is no mention of BBC HD or the BBC Three repeat, while viewings on iPlayer are yet to be added in. We're curious why The Guardian felt the need to state twice that Steven Moffat's first story in charge had lower ratings than the previous season openers, especially when they're quoting massaged figures.
