Posted: 07 Apr 2010 04:46 AM PDT Watched the film The Hunger (1983) on DVD last night. Another one that I'd never seen. This is the one with David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve as vampires, with Susan Sarandon as the human who stumbles into their world. I'd seen all the TV series of the same name, and the film does share a certain similarity in the editing and surreal nature of some of the filming. The film was directed by Tony Scott who was also behind the TV series, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. But the film ... what an interesting idea and way to discuss vampires. Deneuve was suitably icy and emotionless as Miriam the vampire, which is a little strange as it was all about her not wanting to be alone. Bowie played her latest companion, John, and was just brilliant. I loved him as the young man, and then when he aged to old man in the space of a day, he had the stance and performance down pat all the way through. I appreciated the conceit of him aging 50 years while waiting to be seen in a clinic ... something we have all felt! Kudos to Dick Smith for the brilliant old man make up as well - really superb - and I also loved the really really old make up effects too at the end of the film. The crumbling corpses were really creepy and well done, especially when combined with some great lighting and visuals on screen around them. It's a very simple film on one level, but leaves a lot to think about. Deneuve's companions never die, just suddenly get ancient in the space of a few days - and when they do she shuts their bodies in boxes in her attic. And as they also cannot sleep, this is an eternity of living hell. Which is really not a very nice thing to do to those you profess to love. But then when she herself dies, they too die, and she ages and crumbles to dust herself. So was she living off their everlasting life force in some way? The film suggests so, closing with Sarandon now taking on the mantle of female vampire, ever young, ever perfect and ever in search of companion after companion to share her eternity with. I found it a little languid in places, slow paced, and yet the film has a beguiling elegance which perhaps demands that it is told in a measured way. It doesn't lend itself to fast-paced action sequences at all. Overall a good slice of vampire cinema, taking a different tack - there are no fangs in sight here - and with much to consider past the closing titles.

Which other past Doctors will be an influence on your portrayal of the Eleventh Doctor?" Smith gives his answer here. (Thanks to Nicole)

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 02:04 AM PDT BlackBerry users are going Doctor Who mad this week following the use of a BlackBerry Storm to save the world in The Eleventh Hour. With just 20 minutes to save the world, the Doctor used Rory's Blackberry Storm in the village of Leadworth (in some indeterminate time period, something we really shouldn't go into just yet…) to create a "virus" that resets every clock on Earth to 0. While many people noticed the duck pond was free of ducks, few noticed meanwhile that the famous BlackBerry logo was missing from the mobile device – a case of the BBC avoiding product placement, something they didn't bother with on Geoff's laptop or in the hospital… (Via Erictric.com)

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 01:15 AM PDT Schedules for the 17th April have now been fixed and Episode Three of the new series, Victory of the Daleks, will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC HD at the slightly later time of 6.35pm. The programme will again be preceded on BBC One by Total Wipeout and followed by Over the Rainbow. On ITV 1 Doctor Who is up against New You've Been Framed, a series with Harry Hill featuring the best camcorder and mobile phone calamities, the last showing of which was watched by 5 million viewers on 20th March. The last half is up against Harry Hill's The Best of TV Burp, celebrating the best bits from that series. BBC Two offers football with Match of the Day Live and the game between West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough, while Channel 4 has Channel 4 News. On Five you can see the 1965 film Major Dundee, an offbeat western starring Charlton Heston and Richard Harris. Doctor Who Confidential is on BBC Three at 7.20pm, with story writer Mark Gatiss meeting the curator of the Cabinet War Rooms and Churchill Museum to see what the conditions were like at the epicentre of the British war effort.

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 12:36 AM PDT A special auction is being organised to raise funds for research by Great Ormond Street Hospital into organ transplantation. Featuring artwork from illustrators of children works to sketches from Doctor Who designers and artists, the auction takes place during National Transplant Week, 5th-12th June 2010. The research being carried out by the hospital is into how, in organ transplantation, these organs do not survive for as long as those that haven't been transplanted. Works up for auction include the sketch made by model-maker Mike Tucker for the 1997 Doctor Who Night "TARDIS" background (pictured here), and other Doctor Who contributors such as Colin Howard, Lee Binding, Adrian Salmon and Peter McKinstry. Posted: 06 Apr 2010 05:49 PM PDT Reaction to The Eleventh Hour has been good – but with Doctor Who star Matt Smith intentionally avoiding reviews, he might not be aware of this. Sure, Steven Moffat might have told him over the phone, or they might have spent the whole time insulting each other. So, is there a chance the new star of Doctor Who doesn't actually know that the reaction to The Eleventh Hour has been favourable? The Times' (still free) Ed Potton told him that the episode "really is rather good," to which the Eleventh Doctor reacted:
It must be quite strange to see yourself commented upon in the press – this interview in The Times also features reference to a gift book sent to Smith by a website done in response to some angry "anyone but him!" mood found elsewhere in cyberspace. Funny old world, isn't it…?
