DWIN attends the Canadian premiere of The Eleventh Hour

Posted: 08 Apr 2010 12:12 PM PDT

image

This Thursday, Space: The Imagination Station held the Canadian premiere of The Eleventh Hour in the legendary fifth floor of Toronto’s Masonic Temple. Representatives of DWIN attended the showing along with many old and new media representatives, and we’re happy to report that the future of Doctor Who is in fine hands.

And we aren’t just referring to Steven Moffat and Matt Smith here. Whereas the CBC not only dropped the ball after the 2005 series but wiped their shoes clean on it and punted it into the lake, Space seems determined not to make the same mistakes. Representatives from Space were sure to make guests feel welcome upon arrival, and on-air hosts Teddy Wilson and Ajay Fry kept the energy high during their introduction and the subsequent brief Q&A with Steven Moffat, who seemed gratified by the audience’s evident appreciation of the new episode and happy to take the time out for this chat despite the fact that it was going on midnight in his time zone.

The episode itself lived up to all its potential; it’s a high-energy re-introduction to the series, reimagining it as a fairy tale for disillusioned grown-ups. Matt Smith inhabits the character of the Doctor perfectly, and Karen Gillan more than matches his energy, while her character’s backstory holds potential for disturbing developments to come. The audience certainly seemed to appreciate it, frequently laughing and at one point even breaking out into applause.

So all in all, a rousing success. Season Fnarg of Doctor Who premieres on Space on 17 April, and for every person who doesn’t watch it, a unicorn will die. It’s in good hands here in Canada, and your blogger for one would heartily encourage all those reading this to support it at its new home for as long as its new home is happy to support it.

You see, I like David Tennant… but then I like Doctor Who with Matt Smith. But which is best? There's only one way to find out!

Fight!

David Tennant vs Matt Smith - Doctor WhoThe above is how comedian and TV Burp host Harry Hill might put this article on Geeks.co.uk, entitled Dr vs Dr, Smith vs Tennant, in which Ewan Smith compares the two most recent incarnations.

If you, like me, feel it might be a bit too soon to start comparing, you might like to avoid clicking on the link, which eschews our favourite past time here at Kasterborous of reasoned argument in favour of insulting Russell T Davies and David Tennant.

That's right, it might be Doctor versus Doctor on the title, but this aggressive hit piece makes a mockery of opinion based journalism and degrades an otherwise reasonable blog (I like geeks.co.uk and follow them on Twitter) into nothing more than comment-bait.

The only true comparison going on in that article is between the writer's ego and the speed of his fingers, the latter woefully keeping up with the hateful bile vomiting from his dying soul.

Doctor Who is on a billboard, on the sides of buses, and there are screenings in major cities throughout the country, featuring Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and executive producer Steven Moffat. What country is this? It's got to be the UK, right?

WRONG!!!! It's the United States of America!

So what's changed? When the show was relaunched in 2005, and when David Tennant became the Doctor there was nothing. Well, that was when the show was on Sci-Fi. Now it's on BBC America, the show's natural home, and these people just get it! They know that the show can be a huge success - it's already the #1 show on the channel, and want the show to be even bigger!

Apollo 23

Posted: 08 Apr 2010 12:30 AM PDT

Veteran Doctor Who books author Justin Richards is the first name on the list of contributors to the print adventures of the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond, with Apollo 23, set for release on 22 April 2010.
Doctor Who - Apollo 23

'For a few moments this afternoon, it rained on the moon…'

An astronaut in full spacesuit appears out of thin air in a busy shopping centre. Maybe it's a publicity stunt. A photo shows a well-dressed woman in a red coat lying dead at the edge of a crater on the dark side of the moon – beside her beloved dog 'Poochie'.

Maybe it's a hoax. But as the Doctor and Amy find out, these are just minor events in a sinister plan to take over every human being on earth. The plot centres on a secret military base on the moon – that's where Amy and the TARDIS are.

The Doctor is back on Earth, and without the TARDIS there's no way he can get to the moon to save Amy and defeat the aliens. Or is there? The Doctor discovers one last great secret that could save humanity: Apollo 23.

Justin Richards is a well known author of children's fiction, including the novels The Parliament of
Blood
, The Chaos Code and The Skeleton Clock. He also collaborates with Jack Higgins on
thrillers for young adult readers. Author of a good number of Doctor Who books, Justin acts as
Creative Consultant to BBC Books.

Released on April 22nd, Apollo 23 is just £6.29 from Amazon!

Doctor Who Adventure Games Announced

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 11:37 PM PDT

The BBC have officially announced Doctor Who: The Adventure Games. A series of four free downloadable computer games for PC and Mac. Press release follows and click here for the first batch of screenshots.

The Doctor, Amy and some of Doctor Who's most iconic monsters will be making a journey from TV to home computers, as the BBC unveils Doctor Who – The Adventure Games, four original "interactive episodes", which will be made available for free from bbc.co.uk/doctorwho.

These four new adventures will take the form of downloadable computer games available for PC and Mac, in which players assume control of The Doctor and Amy as they embark on new adventures which complement the new TV series.

Doctor Who – The Adventure Games has been produced by a team drawing on the very best talent from TV and gaming. The interactive episodes are executive produced by Steven Moffat, Piers Wenger, Beth Willis and Anwen Aspden (BBC Wales Interactive), alongside Charles Cecil, one of videogaming's most revered creators.

The games are being developed by Sumo Digital, one of the UK's best game designers. Stories and scripts are by Phil Ford (co-writer Doctor Who – Waters Of Mars) and James Moran (Severance, Torchwood Children Of Earth).

The project has been commissioned for BBC Online by the Vision Multiplatform team, headed up by Simon Nelson, and is being driven by BBC Wales Interactive.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan have been digitally recreated in-game, and have provided full voice-overs. Music has been provided by TV series composer Murray Gold. An additional cast will portray original characters and classic enemies.

"Children don't just watch Doctor Who, they join in. They make up games, invent their monsters, create their own stories," says Steven Moffat, executive producer, Doctor Who. "Now, there's something else – now, they can be The Doctor in brand-new episodes. Doctor Who – The Adventure Games will offer fans of The Doctor a unique opportunity to enter his world, face his challenges and grapple with his deadliest foes.

"By developing these games alongside the new TV series, we've been able to weave exciting narrative strands with the very finest game design to create a new kind of Doctor Who, which can be enjoyed by the whole family."

Piers Wenger, Head of Drama, BBC Wales, and executive producer, Doctor Who, adds: "There aren't 13 episodes of Doctor Who this year, there are 17 – four of which are interactive. Everything you see and experience within the game is part of the Doctor Who universe. We'll be taking you to places you've only ever dreamed about seeing – including locations impossible to create on television."

Simon Nelson, head of BBC multiplatform in Vision, continues: "A few years ago, we couldn't have dreamt of commissioning such an innovative form of drama. By integrating the creation of these 'interactive episodes' with the development of the TV series, we've been able to create amazing two-hour dramas, in which you control the action.

"We've all imagined what it would be like to come face to face with some of the universe's most terrifying monsters – now, viewers can find out for themselves.

"Establishing new forms of drama is exactly what the BBC should be doing. By aiming these 'interactive episodes' at the broad audience of the TV show – unique in British television, in that it encompasses at least three generations – we're aiming to encourage the family to gather round the PC or Mac in the same way they do the television. Driving computer literacy is a keystone of the BBC's public service remit and we expect Doctor Who – The Adventure Games to be hugely popular in the homes of Britain this year.

"Only the BBC could produce such an innovative slice of new drama. We're offering two-hour original Doctor Who episodes to production standards on a par with the TV series, working with the very best creatives within the UK. We're hugely proud of Doctor Who – The Adventure Games, which will establish new standards in interactive drama and allow families the country over to enjoy Doctor Who stories in unique and innovative ways."

Anwen Aspden, executive producer, BBC Wales Online, concludes: "Doctor Who – The Adventure Games will offer the chance for Doctor Who fans to visit places they've only dreamed of, facing off against monsters they've previously had to imagine.

"Players will visit places which have never been shown on television – and these will go on to define the look and feel of future TV episodes."

The exact titles of the four episodes are being kept secret for the time being, but the four original stories will take players on a journey throughout time and space, including one location from the Doctor Who series which has never been seen before on screen. Players will encounter new and original monsters, in stories which form part of the overall Doctor Who canon.

The first episode of Doctor Who – The Adventure Games will be available to download for PC and Mac from bbc.co.uk/doctorwho in June 2010. Its title will be revealed at a special press event on 21 April in Sheffield.

(Slightly) New Cybermen!

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 10:25 PM PDT

New Cybermen in Doctor WhoHas promotional coverage of the new Doctor Who interactive adventure game on the BBC website revealed a much-anticipated redesign of the 2006 Cybermen?

Last seen in The Next Doctor (2008), the modern Cybermen have their roots in "Pete's World" – the alternate universe in which Rose Tyler lives with her family and the Tenth Doctor – and the hand of John Lumic. Some managed to escape being exterminated by Daleks or sucked back into the void by escaping into the 19th Century, where the Cybermen attempted to build a CyberKing and conquer the world, only to be thwarted by the Tenth Doctor.

Despite being a long way out of time and stranded in our universe, these Cybermen were more than certainly "CybusMen" – a name coined by fans to distinguish them from the classic series creatures.

Has the end come for Cybus? This image which originally accompanied the news of the Doctor Who interactive adventure game seems to suggest that it has – the distinctive "C" emblem representing Cybus has (finally) been replaced.

The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) are set to encounter the Cybermen later in the current series of Doctoor Who.
