BBC respond to Over the Rainbow trailer complaints Posted: 25 Apr 2010 02:44 AM PDT The BBC have officially responded to the surge of complaints that they received following the animated Graham Norton Over the Rainbow promo, which was shown during the last moments of The Time of Angels on BBC One last night. In response to the anger, a spokesperson said that the channel ”apologises for the timing of Saturday night’s trail”, admitting that the timing [...]
BBC apologises for advert intrusion Posted: 25 Apr 2010 02:19 AM PDT After reports of thousands of complaints about the trailer featuring an animated Graham Norton promoting Over The Rainbow during the closing moments of Doctor Who last night, the BBC have apologised for the occurrence. In an article on the BBC News site: The BBC often promotes programmes in this way but the corporation has acknowledged that in this case the scheduling was inappropriate. A BBC spokesman said: "We apologise for the timing of Saturday night's trail." The BBC received over 3000 complaints about the incident.
Posted: 25 Apr 2010 01:39 AM PDT The BBC has apparently endured a barrage of complaints following the cynical "Next on BBC One" graphical banner displayed in the closing moments of Doctor Who on Saturday night. As The Time of Angels reached its cliffhanger ending, all tension was wrenched from rooms across the country as a computerised Graham Norton appeared at the foot of the screen to advertise Over the Rainbow, the latest in a series of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber talent search co-productions. For those of you who watched on HD or have yet to see The Time of Angels, the intrusion occurred during the now-legendary "trap" speech – hardly great timing. Reaction against this most unusual of interruptions – commonly promotion material for the subsequent program appears during the end credits – has been strong, with Matthew Graham, writer of 2006's Fear Her and executive producer of Ashes To Ashes, tweeting:
With newspapers, the web, electronic program guides on SKY and Virgin as well as the Radio Times (other listings magazines are available), it's likely that the entire viewing public that can be trusted to use a remote control had an idea of what they wanted to watch after Doctor Who… Of course, this isn't the first time that Graham Norton has appeared in Doctor Who – in 2005 he briefly bled through into the first few minutes of Rose.

The Weeping Angels are probably the most interesting and scary monsters to evolve from the new era of Doctor Who. Their appearance in the Doctor-lite episode Blink returned the series to its darker roots and was a triumph of writing from Steven Moffat. Being a pessimist I expected their much publicised return in The Time of Angels would water their creepiness down, much in the same way as the Daleks have now lost any sort of "scare factor". Well, I can't be right all the time, can I? The Doctor is recruited by Father Octavian (Iain Glen) to track the last of the Weeping Angels through the terrifying Maze Of The Dead. This is down to the mysterious River Song (Alex Kingston) who has re-entered the Doctor's life – but can he trust her? With an opening that has touches of James Bond and Raiders Of The Lost Ark, The Time Of Angels is instantly classic Doctor Who. How? Well, there's Amy's frustration at the lack of alien planet action, there's hints of the Doctor's mysterious past, a baddie with a more frightening back-story than you could have imagined, an ever increasing feeling of breath taking claustrophobia and a returning character that doesn't grate. But I'm getting ahead of myself. We start with the Doctor and River 12,000 years apart but with some cunning plotting on River's part their paths cross and she takes the Doctor and Amy to a planet where an army (who already know her and are working under pseudonyms) are examining a space craft. With the Doctor engaging in cryptic talk with River, Amy is soon left behind and almost forgotten by the Doctor. Obviously she's soon in trouble, with a Weeping Angel threatening to send her somewhere in time with just a single touch. It's here we get to see Amy's intelligence, working out her own escape thanks to some very level headed thinking. Back to the story and whispers between River and Father Octavian add another dimension to the story, we know they're up to something untold and the Doctor seems unaware and by the time we're into the Maze Of The Dead (a place littered with weathered statues) the story has gathered quite a pace and we've forgotten there's a secret to be revealed. The plot enters traditional sci-fi territory here as we witness a group of soldiers investigating caves where an alien menace is stalking them and taking them down one by one. But here Moffat plays his masterstroke, one of the dead soldiers communicates with the Doctor via a walkie-talkie delivering scenes so dark it does make uncomfortable but truly memorable viewing. Script wise the episode crams a lot into its duration. It is overflowing with fan-boy wonderment, we even learn where the "wheezing" and "groaning" noise the TARDIS make comes from! What more could a fan want? The final moments build into the first real cliffhanger of the new series, the Doctor brandishing a gun and seemingly flushing their way out of trouble, I for one can't wait to see how he does it. The only problem I can envisage is that Moffat has set such a high standard with his scripts that I hope other writers can match his masterly take on the series. Let's not worry about this yet though and wait with baited breath for part two of this adventure. A fantastic first episode for a much anticipated pair of episodes. As a side note, I was lucky enough to view this without the intrusive Graham Norton banner sliding onto screen during the last few moments, hopefully this wonderful piece of television wasn't ruined for you too much but I assume if I had been watching "live" I would have been truly gutted. Think, BBC – think of not ruining cliffhangers next time.
A time of Angelic Viewing Figures Posted: 24 Apr 2010 11:44 PM PDT The Overnight Viewing figures are out for the Time of Angels. 6.8 Million watched and that's a combined BBC 1 and BBC HD number as the episode was simulcast. it also managed to grab 36% of the viewing Audience. Posted: 24 Apr 2010 10:14 PM PDT Actress Alex Kingston has revealed how her Doctor Who character River Song has affected the way she works with current star Matt Smith. It is apparently in contrast with how she previously interacted with David Tennant, says the actress, who previously appeared as Professor River Song in the 2008 episodes Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, both by current showrunner Steven Moffat
Of course, while the Doctor *might* know who River Song is, we the audience still don't – and after The Time of Angels, we're still none the wiser!

Posted: 24 Apr 2010 02:08 PM PDT Graham Norton's second appearance in Doctor Who has provoked a storm of complaints, with many viewers upset at the appearance of a cartoon version of the Irish comic over the cliffhanger of the BBC One showing of The Time of Angels. The appearance seems to be a bid by the BBC to prevent viewers leaving the channel once Doctor Who has aired. Last week nearly two million viewers left BBC One at the end of Victory of The Daleks. The appearance came at the climax of the episode, covering part of Matt Smith's face. Once the credits were rolling another promo for the Dorothy programme was broadcast. A number of comments on Twitter have complained about the intrusion with critic Charlie Brooker tweeting "Why don't the BBC just wipe s*** all over the screen during the final scene of Dr. Who next week? I hope Moffat is bellowing down a phone to someone right now." Simon Pegg, who starred in The Long Game added "Congrats to the BBC for ruining the climax to Doctor Who with a cartoon Graham Norton telling about another xxxxxx talent show." Graham Norton first made an appearance in the first showing of Rose, when crossed wires resulted in a audio feed of his BBC Three programme being transmitted across the first episode of the relaunched Doctor Who series. Anyone with strong feelings on the appearance can make a complaint via the BBC website.
