Meera Syal on Hungry Earth

Posted: 18 May 2010 07:28 AM PDT

Former Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at No. 42 star Meera Syal appears in the next episode of Doctor Who, The Hungry Earth.

Meera Syall on Doctor Who: The Hungry EarthRecently she chatted with SFX, and they've published the interview on their website. Curiously there isn't very much to say about it – we find out that Syal's character, Dr Nasreen Chaudhry, is

"…a geologist, a very high-up, innovative geologist who is working for a company. And her project is to drill as far as she can towards the centre of the Earth"

…not to mention that…

"…she's quite a tomboy, and this is her life's work…"

Syal's character meets the Doctor, he apparently takes her with him as he tries to work out what is going on and presumably diffuse any antagonism between humans and Silurians. There really isn't anything shocking about the interview at all – other than the fact that Syal was born in 1961, and watched the series as a child:

"Tom Baker was the one who was around in my childhood, and I was very fond of his Doctor,"

…yet she wasn't aware of the Silurians!

"No – and I should have been, apparently, because they'd been around! Which is very bad of me, and proves I obviously didn't watch every episode! They're really well-drawn and formed and have this really precise history. So for the fans it's really nice when they return. And I think they're beautiful. Scary beautiful. They're amazing to look at."

Chris Chibnall's The Hungry Earth, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amy Pond airs on Saturday, 22nd May at 6.15pm on BBC One and BBC HD
