Big Finish New Writer

Posted: 19 May 2010 08:09 AM PDT

Big Finish have announced the winner of their recent competition to find a new writer for their series of Doctor Who audio adventures!

With a range of series and writers such as Marc Platt (Ghost Light), Rob Shearman (Dalek) and many more contributing regularly to them, you would think that Big Finish had their hands full already – but no! They decided to look for a new writer, and opened a competition earlier this year in order to find a new writer.

Big Finish were apparently overwhelmed with entries, leading to script editor Alan Barnes spending a few months reading through many entries (read my attempt here) and eventually picked a story – to be recorded by Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton as the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa – by Rick Briggs (no relation).

'It's a great story,' confirms exec producer Nick Briggs. 'It leapt out at me straight away when Alan showed it to me along with the other finalists. Of course, the slightly embarrassing thing is that he's got the same surname as me! I thought, Oh no, no one's going to believe that he's not a relative of mine. But honestly, he isn't… and we couldn't not pick him just because he's got the same surname as me! That would have been terribly unfair.

Well done to Rick – can't wait to hear it!

Rob's Noms Keep Coming!

Posted: 19 May 2010 01:34 AM PDT

With barely disguised glee, we bring you word that Rob Shearman's short story collection, Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical, has been shortlisted for another prestigious award, namely the Edge Hill University Short Story Prize.

The unique accolade, now in its fourth year, is the UK's only literary award that recognises a published collection of short stories.

Rob says: 'The people at Edge Hill are maybe the reason I'm still writing short stories at all. When my first collection came out, I had no real hopes of any sales or interest - and when it was nominated for their prize, it not only gave it the attention boost it needed, but also convinced me that this prose thing was something worth sticking at! I didn't win the award, but by making me realise I should take short story writing seriously, I was a winner anyway. So to be shortlisted again, for my second book, makes me feel very honoured, and very touched as well.'

The shortlist is:
Jeremy Dyson: The Cranes that Build Cranes
Jane Feaver: Love Me Tender
AL Kennedy: What Becomes
Nuala NĂ ChonchĂșir: Nude
Robert Shearman: Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical

Competition co-ordinator Ailsa Cox, Reader in Creative Writing and English at Edge Hill University, said: "We're delighted by the quality and diversity of the shortlist. Some of these names are already familiar, such as Jeremy Dyson, Rob Shearman and AL Kennedy. A good short story is intense and exciting, sometimes sad and often very comic. The five collections all have these vital ingredients - so I predict that judging will be difficult this year."

The judging panel this year includes: Professor Tanya Byron, writer, psychologist and Edge Hill University's Chancellor; Katharine Fry, Trade Buying Manager at Blackwell; and 2009 winner Chris Beckett.

The winners will be announced on 8th July at an awards ceremony in July at Blackwell's Charing Cross bookstore in London.

Moffat on Post-Humans

Posted: 18 May 2010 11:05 PM PDT

The Grand Moff is in da house at io9.com, where the Doctor Who Executive Producer discusses his stewardship of the Whoniverse.

Steven Moffat, The Grand Moff of Doctor WhoThere is absolutely loads to get through – its a great interview, quite exhaustive in some ways, but one thing thta is particularly interesting is Moffat's feelings about the "post human" character development of Rose in Series 1/Season 27 in 2005 and Donna in Series 4/Season 30 in 2008.

You will recall that in Bad Wolf, Rose Tyler became controlled by the Heart of the TARDIS and used the power of the Time Vortex to dispel the threat of the Daleks; in Journey's End, Donna became exposed to a TimeLord/Human meta-crisis and dispelled the threat of the Daleks.

It seems that Steven Moffat sees a problem with "powering up" the companion – the person with whom the audience usually identifies with.

I think it's a danger. Because I think you'd lose the person to whom the story is happening if you did that. You want them, in a way, in a very basic way, to be your representative in the TARDIS, experiencing the story as you would experience it. The Doctor is extraordinary enough. Do we need other extraordinary people? I think anyone who agrees to go aboard the TARDIS is clearly a bit of a loony, but aside from that, you want it to be ordinary, recognizable people.

Of course, at this point we don't know who the current series is going to end… In the meantime, don't miss this very interesting interview!

End of the Line for Rex

Posted: 18 May 2010 10:31 PM PDT

According to the Telegraph, David Tennant has failed "to make it in America" following the decision by NBC executives to shelve Rex is Not Your Lawyer.

David Tennant - not your lawyerThe idea behind the series – a Chicago lawyer who gets stage fright starts coaching his clients to represent themselves – seemed pretty sound, but after recording of the in-house pilot (hardly "axed after one episode"!) the sets were dismantled and the show has been passed over twice.

In the cut and thrust world of US television, this is nothing new – pilot shows get made and remade regularly – and Tennant will certainly have already put this one down to experience.

However as we reported last week, the Tenth Doctor actor is set to star in the fascinating Decoy Bride film project alongside Kelly MacDonald – a project likely to see the actor enjoying renewed success this side of the Atlantic if the script is as good as we're lead to believe…

Amy’s Choice Reaction

Posted: 18 May 2010 06:46 PM PDT

Amy's Choice bucked the trend for television over the weekend, with the latest episode of Doctor Who attracted 6.2 million viewers, 5.9 million on BBC1 and 0.3 million on BBC HD, according to overnight audience figures. These will likely be enhanced with good figures from delayed viewing services such as BBC iPlayer and Sky+

Doctor Who - Amy's ChoiceAudience figures across all channels were down on the previous week, so its good to see Doctor Who remaining strong and pulling the same audience as the week before.

Critical reaction to an episode highly regarded on Kasterborous was surprisingly mixed; SFX awarded Amy's Choice just 3.5 stars, remarkably low for them, with reviewer Jordan Farley observing:

The direction's a little squiffy you see, never quite striking the right balance between absurdist humour (Grannies with lawnmowers!) and sinister nightmare. Add to that a Despair Squid-style "it's all a dream/hallucination ending" and it all starts feeling a little Red Dwarf. The laughs come thick and fast, including a satisfying running gag about Amy's ample belly, but moments of despair – such as Rory's "death" – or abject horror – such as a playpark full of vaporised kiddies – never shock in the way you might expect. The camera work, too, is a little flat.

Once again, the Telegraph utilise the services of Gavin Fuller, who in 1993 was Mastermind's youngest ever champion with Doctor Who chosen as his specialist subject. He was singularly impressed with the script, from Men Behaving Badly creator Simon Nye.

Nye certainly came up with the goods here, with probably the strongest all-round script we've had this year, chock full of good lines, particularly about the Doctor and his attitude to/relationship with his companions, although Amy's line about the prospect of facing death when dressed as a Peruvian folk band was possibly the highlight.

Describing the episode as "the cheap one" meanwhile, The Guardian also highlight the comedic/surrealist moments from Amy's Choice, before turning attention to the Dream Lord:

…these two realities both turn out to be dreams, and the magic-realist state of a dream can support even dafter images. Both an army of marauding pensioners, and Amy donning a poncho and telling her boys "if we're going to die, let's die looking like a Peruvian folk band" can be completely plausible.

The Dreamlord really is deliciously mean, calling him out on his every character flaw; his love of showing off, his clothes, the way he turns people into weapons (to quote Davros), the way he leaves people behind. It's pretty heavy stuff… at the mid-season point

Den of Geek however aligned themselves with SFX, describing Amy's Choice as "underwhelming, while paying attention to the Dream Lord…

We've had the immense pleasure of seeing Toby Jones on stage, and he's genuinely an outstanding actor. But here, he gets a role that never quite falls the right side of slightly annoying (not helped by the overuse of him cutting in and out of scenes in different places). Certainly the script does him few favours, and by second half of the episode, we felt that the Dream Lord seemed to have outlived his welcome, if not his purpose.

The Dream Lord, we're told, is actually the Doctor. Which explains why the two characters knew each other so well.

(Incidentally, many fans online have speculated that the Dream Lord might be the birth of the Valeyard, the evil incarnation of the Doctor revealed in 1986's Trial of a Time Lord season.)

So – Amy's Choice was a mixed bag, just as we expected. If you enjoyed the episode, the BBC's Official Doctor Who website has a selection of extras, such as a new panoramic of the inside of the new TARDIS!

Steven Moffat discusses fairytale inspirations

Posted: 18 May 2010 04:42 PM PDT

io9 have posted an interview with Steven Moffat, which was conducted prior to the launch of the series, however there are some interesting points regarding his inspiration behind the Series 5 ‘fairytale’ theme. “When I say “fairytale,” a better way of saying it would be “modern fairy tale”,” the showrunner explained. “It’s not that it’s like [...]
