Overnight ratings for The Hungry Earth Posted: 22 May 2010 10:48 PM PDT The sun was shining across the UK throughout yesterday, which unfortunately resulted in Doctor Who falling to its lowest overnight figure since 2005, as 4.5million tuned in for The Hungry Earth. With 4.24million watching on BBC1, and an additional 0.30million in HD, Episode 8 had a 32.2% share of the total audience. It’s not all bad news [...] |
Posted: 22 May 2010 10:30 PM PDT An interview in Friday's edition of The Evening Standard with actress Karen Gillan has revealed her feelings on becoming a household name and also her career before Doctor Who. As a struggling actress, Karen had worked a few bit parts in TV shows but as the work dried up, she took a job behind the bar at a pub in Kennington.
After she was recruited to work at the London Fashion Week as a catwalk model in 2007, things started to pick up and it wasn't long before she had aced the audition to flesh out the role of Amy Pond (all's well that ends well then!). Karen also talks about her gruelling 9 month work schedule when filming Doctor Who, where 11 days of filming eventually leads to a day off. But it's not necessarily the best thing in her view:
Since starting work on Doctor Who, things are now looking better and better, Karen mentioning that she'll definitely be back for more. Whatever fate awaits Amy Pond, let's hope we don't have to face it for a while.. |

5.8: The Hungry Earth - Overnight Ratings Posted: 22 May 2010 10:18 PM PDT 5.8: The Hungry Earth - Overnight Ratings News Dated: 23/5/2010 The overnight ratings are in for 5.8: The Hungry Earth. The episode achieved an overnight figure of 4.5m viewers, with a 32.2% audience share. Although this is the lowest overnight figure since the show returned in 2005, the Audeince Share was still respectable. The drop in figures is purely to do with the good weather in the UK, and is not a reflection of depreciating audiences. ** This figure includes both the BBC One and BBC HD channels as the episode was simulcast. Final BARB ratings will be available in the next 10 days. Series Five Viewing Figures so far: 5.1: The Eleventh Hour - Overnight: 8.3m (38.4%) - Final: 10.08m 5.2: The Beast Below - Overnight: 6.7m (34.0%) - Final: 8.42m 5.3: Victory of the Daleks - Overnight: 6.2m (32.7%) - Final: 7.82m 5.4: The Time of Angels - Overnight: 6.8m (36.7%) - Final: 8.59m 5.5: Flesh And Stone - Overnight: 6.9m (34.5%) - Final: 8.50m 5.6: The Vampires of Venice - Overnight: 6.2m (30.6%) - Final: 7.68m 5.7: Amy's Choice - Overnight: 6.2m (33.0%) - Final: Coming Soon 5.8: The Hungry Earth - Overnight: 4.5m (32.2%) - Final: Coming Soon [Source: Andy Parish] |

The Life of a Giant Warrior Lizard Chick Posted: 22 May 2010 09:42 PM PDT Neve McIntosh, the self-described "giant warrior lizard chick" from tonight's The Hungry Earth and next week's Cold Blood, provided an interview published yesterday to ReelScotland in which she discussed how it felt to be on the Doctor Who set in reptile makeup when the cameras weren't rolling:
It's certainly not very difficult to picture Arthur Darvill's above-described reaction as sporting the same bewildered face worn by Rory upon first meeting the Doctor in The Eleventh Hour. I suppose it goes to show that, in Darvill's case, the casting directors knew what they were doing by hiring an actor with similar personality traits to his character! You can find more excellent prosthetic makeup anecdotes from McIntosh as well as interesting discussions on the new series Silurians and their relation to the classic ones, the possibility of the Silurians returning to Doctor Who post-Cold Blood, and the infamous "Scottish agenda" by absorbing her massive, fact-packed, slightly spoilery interview on ReelScotland. And if you want to see more of Neve's acting flair, look no further than next week's Cold Blood, written by Chris Chibnall, on Saturday, May 29th, at 7PM! |

The Hungry Earth - Overnight Ratings Posted: 22 May 2010 08:07 PM PDT The Hungry Earth was watched by 4.5 million viewers according to unofficial overnight figures. The glorious weather across the UK on Saturday saw the series fall to the lowest overnight total since the series returned in 2005. 4.24 million watched on BBC One with an additional 0.30 million watching on BBC HD. The share remained consistent with 32.2% of the total audience. Only 13.1 million were watching TV when Doctor Who started implying many were still out enjoying the hottest weekend of the year. The programme inherited an audience of 1.8 million viewers from Junior Apprentice and peaked with 4.8 million on BBC One. The winner of the night was Over the Rainbow, with the results show topping the night with 6.2 million and the earlier show getting 5.8 million watching. Both Casualty and The National Lottery: In It to Win It 2012 beat Doctor Who with the programme coming fifth for the day. With Sunday's overnight figures to come Doctor Who is the 32nd most watched programme for the week. Against Doctor Who, ITV1 achieved 1.9 million for The Whole 19 Yards. Final figures will be released next week and will include those who recorded the programme for viewing later. The lowest confirmed figure for the revived series so far, is 6.1 million for the Satan Pit in June 2006. On BBC Three, Doctor Who Confidential had 0.28 million watching and was 15th for the day on Multi-Channel Television. |

Posted: 22 May 2010 07:21 PM PDT This past Thursday (May 20, 2010), Doctor Who: Podshock recorded a live show at the book launch party for The Mythological Dimensions of Doctor Who. Taking place at Fiddlesticks Pub & Grill in Manhattan (NYC), Ken, Billy and I arrived to see the venue was swarming with activity. Having passed it many times, I believe I have a vague memory being a patron there some years ago. I can recommend their veggie burgers (Ken and Billy equally recommend their other burgers). |

American Who-athon; American Who Delay Posted: 22 May 2010 06:51 PM PDT ChicagoNow has reported that US subscriber network BBC America is planning a small-scale "marathon" of Doctor Who next weekend: Saturday, May 29th and Sunday, May 30th. In BBC America's recent past, the network has reaped considerable benefits from airing Doctor Who marathons prior to massive premiere events. The two-day celebration of David Tennant's career in early January leading up to The End of Time: Part Two gave the programme the necessary amount of attention for Doctor Ten's regeneration to provide BBC America with its at-the-time highest-rated night ever, sporting over a million viewers. A slightly smaller-scale marathon occurred the day of The Eleventh Hour's American premiere, which rendered an even better 1.2 million, the channel's current all-time record. But in next week's case, the "marathon" (note that I'm still using quotes) carries with it a few negative side-effects for American fans. According to BBC America's TV Schedule for May 29th through May 31st, the two-day run, instead of displaying many back-to-back episodes from a series that certainly has a trove of stories to choose from, will consist of only the first six episodes from Matt Smith's Season 31… aired 3 times over the course Saturday and Sunday, interrupted with a brief stint of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares and Top Gear. Also, this particular run, instead of concluding with a brand-new episode in the manner of the network's recent successful Who marathons, opts to carry over into an extended set of the inferior and considerably less-British Star Trek: The Next Generation. Unfortunately, because the marathon does not conclude with a new episode, the Kasterborous-acclaimed Amy's Choice will not premiere on May 29th, but on June 5th, placing American Whovians yet another week out of sync with the British audience. Nonetheless, if you're a stateside viewer and discover yourself in good enough humor to throw yourself a six-hour Doctor Who party (and let's be honest – who wouldn't want to?), you've got three chances to do so: May 29th at 8PM, and May 30th at 2AM and 2PM, eastern time. |

Posted: 22 May 2010 01:01 AM PDT Okay, coalition government, what have you got for us this time? By the looks of it, the Conservative-Liberal Democrats have had a few words (and by a few, I mean 36 pages worth) with the National Audit Office (NAO) and apparently loved them so much that they decided to give them full access to the BBC's money-spending habits! How very kind of them. If you recall, this comes as no surprise to anyone who was closely following the BBC's popularity amongst the candidates for Prime Minister pre-"election," as both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats had indicated plans to hand over the keys of budget-scrutinizing to the NAO even before David Cameron took office. While many are fearing that the BBC is under threat of being commandeered by the government and possibly being used to push political agendas, the government has stated plans to "maintain" its independence… at least for now. You may remember that both Who-producer-incumbent Steven Moffat and his predecessor Russell T. Davies have expressed fears of a Tory government bringing about the downfall of the BBC altogether. Back in December, Davies predicted that under this government, the appearance of a BBC defeat would not be evident at first:
Could this be the first of many rungs on a ladder to the BBC's certain doom? And what does all this mean for Doctor Who? Naturally, if the BBC is wiped from the face of the earth, so will be our favorite weekly forty-five minutes of television. But long-term concerns aside, what if the government has a look at the Beeb's Whovian budget and determines it too hefty? Will the show face more cuts? Even if the Doctor's bank account gets slashed a little more, we likely needn't worry. We've already seen how the production team is able to fare with less money, and so far they've given us one of the best seasons yet of the new series. Where Doctor Who is concerned, less cash tends to yield a broader scale of creativity. More brainpower leads to better stories. Improved episodes contribute to a happier society. Good news can be found in every piece of bad news, right? I suppose we'll have to wait to find out as this "BBC vs. the government" drama begins to unfold. (Via Digital Spy) |

Posted: 21 May 2010 11:26 PM PDT Digital Journal has published a fairly extensive piece to tie in with the UK broadcast of tonight's episode, The Hungry Earth; and has picked up on an interview Karen Gillan gave recently, in which she talked about the possibility of a Doctor Who story involving Billy Connolly and the Loch Ness Monster! Meanwhile, the original interview with Gillan can be found here; and, as mentioned by the Doctor Who News Page earlier, ReelScotland has published an interview (including spoilers) with one of tonight's guest stars, Neve McIntosh. The Hungry Earth can be seen tonight, on BBC 1, at 6.15 p.m. It's the first of a two-part story by Chris Chibnall. The second episode, Cold Blood, will be shown on Saturday, 29 May, at the later time of 7 p.m. |

Meanwhile Doctor Who #13 hits the shelves in July. Hot foot it to the interview to read about some of the best Tenth Doctor moments in the series and what Lee has in store for Matt Smith's Doctor. |
