Noel Clarke’s Heartless

Posted: 22 May 2010 05:15 AM PDT

Former Doctor Who companion Noel ClarkeA glowing interview in The Scotsman newspaper has revealed a little about Noel Clarke's formative childhood years and also looks at his newest starring venture out the week, Heartless. The article also looks at his next film as director. The movie 4. 3. 2. 1., a wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey affair, concentrates on four female friends caught up in a diamond robbery over one weekend. He commented on his inspiration for writing the film.

"I just wanted to do something different really," he says. "I remember having a meeting after Kidulthood, and the man I met said he didn't think the girls I'd written were very good, that he didn't know any women that behaved like that. And I'm like, 'Well, you wear a monocle and a curly moustache; of course you don't know anyone like that!' But I got so annoyed at that… it's like saying a white man shouldn't write black characters. Or a gay man shouldn't write straight characters."

Noel is cited as one of the most successful black actors in Britain right now, alongside Josef Patterson (Bad Wolf/ the Parting of the Ways) and Idris Alba (Luther) which just shows an example of the incredible talent that Doctor Who attracts.

What's also worth noting is that Noel's upbringing is has some slight parallels to Mickey Smith's, the character he played in Doctor Who from 2005-2010.

Heartless is released on Friday, 28th May. 4.3.2.1. follows on June 2nd.

McIntosh on Tennant

No air date has been announced yet but head over to ReelScotland for a lengthy chat about Matt Smith, Silurians and female villains in New Who.
