Doctor Who and the Flying Bonsai Posted: 01 Jun 2010 07:52 AM PDT Oh fame, fame, fatal fame. Imagine having the whole world hanging on your every movement- sounds horrible, right? Well imagine no more because thanks to obsessive media types we can live vicariously through our Doctor Who heroes Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. Hurrah! So what's Matt been up to? Well according to the People, he's been walking around with his fly undone.
Oh you People wags. But enough trouser malfunctions what about Matt's mind? What does Matt have to teach about The Craft?
Matt's point is a fair one. In Stanislavski's 1937 novel An Actor Prepares the actor is sent on a journey where physical movement is just as important as the mental work but thanks to the knowing comment by The Guardian's Media Monkey it's just frosting on the news bilge cake. Take Karen Gillan's recent papping while visiting a Bonsai tree farm in Suffolk with new squeeze photographer Patrick Green in The Mirror. The item itself is fairly innocuous. The news value is that Karen just happens to be a) in public and b) in public with her boyfriend for the first time. Gillan's own comment to K-Gillan.com aptly reflect what most people were thinking when they saw the pictures.
But here she is commenting on nothing; Matt or Karen may have something interesting or insightful to say but it's defined by what is dominating the news until there's no-way to separate the interesting and the profound from bonsai trees and 'hoisting your flag.'

Doctor Who: 'Cold Blood' Review - IGN Posted: 01 Jun 2010 04:55 AM PDT
| ||
Posted: 01 Jun 2010 04:51 AM PDT Doctor Who's 10th anniversary was celebrated with the first ever multi-Doctor story, The Three Doctors. Written by Robert Baker and Dave Martin it was an ambitious tale let down by the restricted effects of its time. This is not to say it's not fun, it is and rightly holds a place in fans memories. This audiobook, unabridged from the Target novelisation by Terrence Dicks allows your memory to wander, effects wise and gives it an extra impact. Doctors One, Two and Three cross Time and Space and come together to fight a ruthlessly dangerous enemy – Omega. Once a Time Lord, now exiled to a black hole in space, Omega is seeking a bitter and deadly revenge against the whole universe. Katy Manning does a sterling job here, her sweet voice may have matured slightly but this helps her give depth to the male characters. Easily moving from character to character she breaths new life into familiar situations and even more familiar people. Her Pertwee has his dry wit, her Troughton his comic time and the sharpness of Hartnell. As for her Jo Grant, well she still manages to capture the characters naughty and fun charm. The story holds up very well in this format which is given extra impact and atmosphere thanks to a rather considered score from Simon Power who also adds some solid sound effects. The story itself is a fun multi-Doctor romp which keeps the Third Doctor as the focal point, something The Five Doctors lost sight of and tried to attach too many memories (or ghosts) to the story. The Brigadier gets to pontificate and be exasperated not by one but three Doctors. The humour of the piece does shine through and the pontificating between the Doctors amplified. Currently, the BBC Audiobook range is going from strength to strength and the care going into each release is very evident. The constant use of segments from David J. Howe's acclaimed release, The Target Book (www.telos.co.uk for more information) for reference on the original book's release helps raise these books above others. Inclusion of the original artwork by Chris Achilleos adds to the retro fun. On the whole this is nostalgia at its best and a fine starting point for anyone new to the range or new to Doctor Who's glorious past. The Three Doctors from BBC Audiobooks is out now, and can be bought from Amazon for just £7.59!

During the summer I was writing it, we had lots of prints of Van Gogh paintings up round the house – and a board with index cards going through the plot, scene by scene – and both of my big kids came up with ideas… Also in the magazine:
