Vincent’s Genesis

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 08:18 AM PDT

Richard Curtis, writer of such films as Notting Hill and Love, Actually, has commented on the script that he has written for his Doctor Who episode Vincent and the Doctor.

Richard Curtis, Doctor Who writerCurtis, co-creator of Blackadder, recalled the genesis of his episode during a special screening of it at the BFI Southbank.

"I came up with the story and knew what form I wanted it to take, but then I was given all sorts of instructions in terms of what was happening with the Doctor and with Amy. I remember I was told, when I first handed in my first draft, the Doctor talked too much and that I should go back and watch some of the episodes and see that actually he was rather efficient in the way that he talked."

The writer also noted that some rewrites were necessary as well:

"I was told the beginning was too slow, that when he met Vincent it wasn't cute enough, so it was quite nice because when you're writing things all on your own it's quite lonely, you have to make so many of the decisions on your own. And it was nice being pushed around in the right direction and having a format."

Despite the aforementioned ups and downs, the episode looks like it going to be a belter and was worth the extra effort!

Vincent and the Doctor airs this Saturday on BBC One and BBC One HD at 6.40pm

City of the Daleks still in trial mode

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 08:04 AM PDT

The BBC has admitted the surprise early release of the downloadable game, City of the Daleks, was part of the testing procedure for the game.

Anwen Aspden, executive producer at BBC Wales, told the gaming website MCV.
We're testing the system with an almost-final version of City of the Daleks ahead of the official release date, The reaction so far has been overwhelming, but we're still investigating whether we should tweak certain elements up to release on 5th June. So whilst those who've downloaded and enjoyed it in its current iteration have the advantage of playing through it early, there may be some minor tweaks coming.

We're running a launch trailer for the game immediately after Saturday's episode of Doctor Who, that's when we expect the servers to come under the most strain – we'll let everyone know if the finished article is available ahead of then.

Torchwood Comic USA

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 03:58 AM PDT

Torchwood Comic in the USASet for release in the USA on August 10, 2010, Torchwood: The Official Comic issue #1 sees Tommy Lee Edwards and John Barrowman team up for a strip penned by Barrowman himself!

Titan Publishing is pleased to announce the launch of Torchwood comic, based on the hit BBC America show.

Acclaimed artist Tommy Lee Edwards, currently working with outspoken TV personality Jonathan Ross on the hit comic series Turf, has teamed up with John Barrowman (Torchwood's Captain Jack) and his sister and frequent coworker Carole E. Barrowman, to produce Captain Jack and the Selkie.

Captain Jack and the Selkie is one of two original Torchwood stories in issue #1 and sees Jack facing a deadly threat on a remote Scottish island, where people are disappearing one by one. To his horror, Jack starts to suspect he may know who, or rather what, is responsible.

Barrowman is overjoyed to have worked with Edwards, who he describes as one of his favorite artists. The pair began their collaboration when Barrowman and his sister Carole came across a poster of Captain Jack at the 2008 San Diego Comic Con.

"Tommy and Trevor had drawn a brilliant poster of my face super-imposed over the Face of Boe, which I think is the best piece of Captain Jack art I've seen," said Barrowman. "The four of us hit it off immediately and I asked if they'd ever be interested in working with us on a Captain Jack project. They thought about it for, oh, about 30 seconds, and so 'Captain Jack and the Selkie' was born!"

Torchwood Comic in the USAThe second story is part one of a special five-part story written by Torchwood TV script editor Gary Russell. Entitled Broken, the story sees Captain Jack, Gwen and Ian to get trapped in a cosmic hotel, while an old villain from the TV series returns.

Artwork for Broken is provided by Adrian Salmon, whose work includes The Cybermen for Doctor Who Magazine and Judge Karyn for the Judge Dredd Megazine.

Two collectible covers will be available for each issue – an art cover and a picture cover. British comic book artist Ian Churchill, whose work includes Superman for DC Comics and Avengers, Deadpool, and X-Men for Marvel, has drawn the art cover for issue #1. An alternate art cover, also drawn by Churchill, will be available exclusively at this year's San Diego Comic Con.

Available from all good retailers and specialist comic stores.

Doctor Who Adventures "City of the Daleks" Ready for Download.

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 03:18 AM PDT

The computer game, which was introduced as "The Doctor Who Adventures" earlier this year has now been released.  There are a couple of sore points, 1: IT IS AS WE EXPECTED GEO-LOCKED, that means if you are not resident in the UK you can't Access it. 2: WINDOWS VERSION ONLY, the Mac version is due on the 15th of July. and most Importantly 3: IT WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THE REST OF THE WORLD, but your going to have to lay out your hard earned cash for it.  I suspected this part but as the BBC now has to show responsibilty for it's earnings since the change of government in the UK this was no surprise to me.

The Joy of Who

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 12:12 AM PDT

Richard Curtis has told BBC Newsbeat about the joy of working on Doctor Who.

The rom-com genius behind Love, Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral and one of the scriptwriters of Bridget Jones's Diary said how relaxed he felt taking on the daunting mantle of writer on one the BBC's flagship shows.
Doctor Who - Vincent and the Doctor by Richard Curtis

"I just love being taken on as a hired hand. Very relaxing. I must do it more."

Richard also extended the love fest towards the Doctor himself Matt Smith:

"He's fantastic. We did a really long read-through in Cardiff. We got to the end and said, 'Oh… I was rubbish'. So we went back through the whole thing and did it again!"

Curtis's episode Vincent and the Doctor, sees the bow tie twiddling Doctor travelling back to Provence after spotting a mysterious figure and possible alien figure in one of Vincent Van Gogh's painting, to meet the great man himself.

"I think there's a really great bunch of young actors around at the moment.

"Matt is great. Tom Sturridge, Aaron Johnson. There's a whole generation of young guys and I'm very optimistic for them."

Head over to Newsbeat to read about filming in Trogir, Croatia, which also served as Venice in Vampires in Venice, and Karen Gillan's jealousy over Matt Smith's props.

Vincent and the Doctor airs this Saturday 5th June at 18:40 on BBC1 and BBC HD.

Adventures in time and space (just not outside the UK)

Posted: 02 Jun 2010 11:00 PM PDT

image

Well, those fans in North America hoping to try out the whizzy new videogame, City of the Daleks, which was just released yesterday are going to be disappointed… it ain’t available to North Americans.

Ok. I’ve had enough of this crap.

I get that the BBC and its website are designed to solely service the license payer. I don’t agree—I think the Internet should be bigger than such parochial concerns, but I’m a futurist at heart. Fine.

But here’s the thing… Doctor Who has been and always will be a global phenomenon—one that’s bigger than just Britain. And it bewilders me after 25 years of being a Doctor Who fan that the BBC and its subsidiaries and minions just do not get that. I’m old enough to remember how, in spite of the fact that—depending on who you talked to—a third to a half of the novels published during the Wilderness Years were bought in North America, BBC Books were next to useless in ensuring proper North American distribution during the period 1997-2003… but never saw this as a factor in the range’s steady decline in sales. Because North America…they’re Americans. Who cares about them?

The same blindspot applies here. The BBC Doctor Who website now becoming virtually unviewable outside of Britain due to the high amount of geofenced video content, the Adventure Game launch… it’s the same parochial nonsense.

This problem could be fixed. It would take work, sure. But it could be fixed. The BBC would simply need to partner with BBC Worldwide on the website and any products it puts out. A mirror of the BBC Doctor Who site would exist outside Britain, under BBC Worldwide’s auspices. It would have the content but ad-generating material as well to pay for non-UK access. They do this already on the BBC’s news site (that’s why, if you’re Canadian, you get Telus ads before looking at video content on the BBC news website). Worldwide could similarly run a site for the Adventure Game on a similar, ad revenue generating principle rather than waiting for a commercial release that will get fewer users.

This was identified to me as the solution by the BBC’s own staff when I wrote them about geofencing the video material two years ago. So why hasn’t this been done? Corporate lethargy? The usual tunnel vision at higher levels?

The BBC have seemed to have had no trouble in restrategizing and rebranding Doctor Who over the past year. Except this. Why not do the job properly? Please?

Curtis – “An Honour”

Posted: 02 Jun 2010 10:25 PM PDT

Doctor Who writer Richard CurtisDoctor Who scriptwriter Richard Curtis has revealed that he would be honoured to write another episode of the series – if he had the right idea.

Speaking in Doctor Who Magazine, Curtis said:

"If I ever have an idea that I think would be suitable and best done in Doctor Who again, of course, it would be an honour and delight to do another."

The writer – best known for writing sitcoms Blackadder and The Vicar of Dibley as well as hit romcoms Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love, Actually - also revealed that he had help from his family in planning and plotting Vincent and the Doctor, which stars Tony Curran as Vincent van Gogh and Love, Actually star Bill Nighy as Dr Black.

"During the summer I was writing it, we had lots of prints of Van Gogh paintings up round the house – and a board with index cards going through the plot, scene by scene – and both of my big kids came up with ideas."

Doctor Who Magazine #422 is out now – meanwhile Vincent and the Doctor airs at 6.40pm on BBC One and BBC HD this Saturday, 5th June.

Vincent and the Doctor Trailer

Posted: 02 Jun 2010 07:59 PM PDT

Doctor Who continues this week with an episode by the highly regarded Richard Curtis – Vincent and the Doctor has been the focus of a lot of press attention this week, thanks to Curtis' previous successes such as Blackadder and The Vicar of Dibley, not to mention his movies.

Along these much loved BBC comedies, Curtis also wrote Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and Love Actually – all ow which starred Hugh Grant, and the latter of which co-starred Bill Nighy, who appears in Vincent and the Doctor as Dr Black.

(Nighy was of course famously announced "exclusively" by the Daily Mail in 2004 as the Ninth Doctor. How we laughed!)

Tony Curran is the true star of the episode however, portraying the legendary artist Vincent van Gogh – get a sample of him alongside Matt Smith and Karen Gillan as the Doctor and Amy in this trailer for the episode (and look out for the captions!):

Vincent and the Doctor airs at 6.40pm on BBC One and BBC HD this Saturday, 5th June.

Pulse Tonight!

Posted: 02 Jun 2010 07:04 PM PDT

Well, it's broadcast night for Pulse (9pm, BBC3, a mantra which, afterwards, I can finally let slip from my brain!) I don't know why I'm so nervous, it's not like the little people in the TV set are going to do anything different on the night. In the last couple of days, I've done so many interviews that I've lost track, including but not limited to Pink Raygun, On TV Tonight, Velcro City, and Sky TV. I've written a blog about the creation of a particular scene for the BBC Writers' Room. The press conference after the preview is featured in two podcasts by the Geek Syndicate and we got a great review on BBC Radio 5's Richard Bacon Show, about one hour and fifty-six minutes in. Through it all, Tom Hunter's being doing a fantastic job of summarising the coverage for our Facebook fan page. On Twitter, our hashtag is #pulsebbc3. I gather that the Aylesbury SF Group are meeting up to watch it together. If you're nearby, why not get in touch and pop along?

And of course those in the UK can see the whole episode online now here. Though I gather that gets taken down sometime today, presumably at the moment of broadcast. From then on, the pilot should be on the BBC IPlayer, and I'll provide a link when it appears.

If you see the pilot tonight and enjoy it, please make sure to leave a comment on either the BBC 3 Blog or at their Facebook site. The bigger the response, the more chance we've got of going to series.

Thanks very much, everyone, for all your support in the run up to broadcast. I really hope you enjoy it. You'll see how much hard work that fine cast and crew have put into it. Let us know what you think. Until tomorrow, Cheerio!

Bambera’s Back

Posted: 02 Jun 2010 06:30 PM PDT

Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy with Angela BruceBig Finish have revealed that Brigadier Winifred Bambera, the no-nonsense UNIT leader from the 1989 TV story Battlefield, is returning in the Audio Adventures of Doctor Who!

Bambera returns in the upcoming second season of The Lost Stories, in Animal, written by Andrew Cartmel. Once again she is played by Angela Bruce, who was delighted to be reunited with Sylvester McCoy at the recording in April.

"Animal is a great, old-fashioned UNIT story," says producer David Richardson, "in which Bambera and her troops are investigating some strange events at a university. And then the Doctor and Raine arrive…"

This particular set of Lost Stories are based on the unused scripts for the original Season 27, which was in the early stages of pre-production in 1989 when the series was cancelled, a well as three stories from the William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton eras.

Animal, and the upcoming Lost Stories, are available for pre-order now.

Surprise! City of the Daleks is HERE!

Posted: 02 Jun 2010 05:24 PM PDT

Here's a pleasant way to begin your day – despite expectations surrounding the release of the first installment of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games suggesting that the BBC would unveil the game to Windows users this Saturday, the broadcaster announced the immediate availability of City of the Daleks for download yesterday!

Doctor Who - City of the DaleksTo start playing, head over to the BBC website, and make sure you have 10-20 minutes to spare for the 330-megabyte download to arrive on your computer.

For those of you who are not sure what we're on about, here's a friendly synopsis of the game provided by the BBC:

"The TARDIS materializes in 1963 to find the human race crushed by the Daleks. The Doctor embarks on a quest to the Dalek planet to correct time and save the last survivor of Humanity – Amy Pond!"

If that's not enough to get you to download right this second, then you must fall under one of two categories: you're either a Mac user, or you're a fan living outside the UK (Unfortunately for this contributor, I meet both of these prerequisites).

The Macintosh edition of City of the Daleks, as of the present, is still scheduled for 15 June. Sorry, folks, no early Christmas for you!

Also, the BBC has finally hinted at its timetable for the game's international release. As you can see by clicking here, foreign Whovians will get their first taste at the Eleventh Doctor's gaming debut in early July, but for an unspecified price; there's no such thing as a free lunch for those not paying the licence fee.

We'll have a review of the game soon – in the meantime, checkout our preview of City of the Daleks!
