Early Release Explained

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games - City of the Daleks

The official Doctor Who website has released Doctor Who: The Adventure Games City of the Daleks two days earlier than scheduled causing mixed reactions by some fans.

The first instalment of The Adventure Games is officially released on 5th June 2010 but the BBC website has released an early iteration of the game for testing purposes. Anwen Aspden, executive producer at BBC Wales, told MCV:

"We're testing the system with an almost-final version of 'City of the Daleks' ahead of the official release date,"

He also commented about upcoming changes to Saturday's final release:

"The reaction so far has been overwhelming, but we're still investigating whether we should tweak certain elements up to release on 5th June. So whilst those who've downloaded and enjoyed it in its current iteration have the advantage of playing through it early, there may be some minor tweaks coming."

The game itself looks and sounds fantastic and is a lot of fun to play but at the moment is a little slow on even the latest computers. Here's hoping all problems will be ironed out by tomorrow!

City of the Daleks will officially be available for download from the BBC's Doctor Who website from tomorrow.

Croatia is Like a Soap Opera

Posted: 04 Jun 2010 02:46 AM PDT

Doctor Who - Vincent and the DoctorA less busy, more elegant featurette from the BFI premiere allows the viewer a chance to listen to some of Richard Curtis' reasons for writing Vincent and the Doctor and his opinion of the Doctor's character, and Karen Gillan's point-of-view on what it was like to film in Croatia:

"[We were in a] tiny little town called Trogir, and the whole Doctor Who crew sort of took over the whole town, so it was like being in a soap opera! Every single restaurant that you walked past had people that you knew in it from Doctor Who."

View the whole snapshot of Gillan and Curtis at the BBC or on YouTube!

You Heard the Kids! 9 Out of 10!

The final BFI video we have to show you today focuses on the reaction from the children who saw the screening, and their opinions on Vincent and the Doctor. It seems to be generally positive, although one girl seemed disappointed with the length.

"Probably 9 out of 10 because it could have been sort of a tiny bit longer,"

was her reply when she was apparently posed with the same question Karen Gillan was asked two videos ago, the question of rating the episode on a scale of 1 to 10.

Interestingly, during a clip of the Q&A session after one of the screenings in the same video, Richard Curtis revealed to a young fan in the crowd that had he been asked to write a previous episode, he would have wanted to write Blink. I suppose we'll have to wait and see what sort of story Curtis' writing style can provide for us before we can speculate on what his version of Blink might be like.

YouTubers go here.

Okay, What Have You Got For Me This Time?

So, if you're looking for a sneak peek, some behind-the-scenes-of-a-screening-event action, or just a bit of history, the BBC website has thought of you. With this much information, plus the City of the Daleks game, we expect you should be kept plenty busy until Vincent and the Doctor airs tomorrow at 6:40PM on BBC1 and BBCHD!

Make Your Mark, Karen

Posted: 04 Jun 2010 02:07 AM PDT

Karen Gillan has revealed that while still adjusting to the media spotlight, it has been an instant 'shock to the system' taking on the mantle of the Doctor's companion.
Doctor Who star Karen Gillan

"It kind of changes your life as soon as you're announced as playing the part, before anyone's even seen you. So you're kind of walking into an already famous part, if you know what I mean. It's not you that's made it famous. So what you've got to do is put your own sort of mark on it I guess."

Characteristically, she's taken it all in her rather leggy stride and has been nothing but positive about the Who experience.

"Everyone's been really nice and they feel so passionately about it that it makes me really excited to be involved in it."

Gillan also recalled the moment whilst promoting Doctor Who in America when a fan got down on one knee and tried to make an honest woman of the Amy Pond actress.

"I got proposed to in America by a girl," she said. "I was quite taken aback by that. She was very nice and all, but I'm not really ready for marriage."

Doctor Who continues this Saturday with Vincent and the Doctor which airs at 18:40 on BBC1 and BBC HD.

Mr & Mrs Who?

Posted: 04 Jun 2010 01:00 AM PDT

Richard Curtis is no stranger to weddings – that's why he's thrown his hat into the ring for the Doctors and Amy's nuptials.

Doctor Who - writer Richard CurtisCurtis, writer of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones's Diary and this Saturdays episode of Who Vincent and the Doctor, loves the chemistry between Matt Smith and Karen Gillan so much, he jokingly said he'd love to write their wedding episode.

"I'm really interested in the relationship in all manifestations of those two and I think they're a very good one, which is just the very complex character of a 900-year-old non-man – still excited, still youthful, knowing everything, all of that – mixed with just a completely normal girl." "I think they're a very interesting version of that and I love how sort of modern and upfront she is. And it means he isn't as romantic as some of the others have been. I find it gripping, the two of them."

Vincent and the Doctor airs this Saturday at 18:40 on BBC1 and BBC HD.

I Know What I Like…

Posted: 04 Jun 2010 12:20 AM PDT

Doctor Who - Vincent and the DoctorMatt Smith and Karen Gillan recently sat down to talk about their favorite artists (YouTube here) in the latest of their "Big Questions" segments on the BBC website as a tie-in to Vincent and the Doctor. Interestingly, of the long list of painters and sculptors drawn up between them, Van Gogh is not mentioned once. No wonder he cut his ear off; he must have wanted a Doctor's attention!

If you're one of those people who likes to study up on the truth behind a historical episode of Doctor Who before you watch, the Beeb has you covered as well – If you go here, you'll find a brief biography of the starving artist's life and how he posthumously became recognized as one of the most significant painters ever to have lived. You'll also inevitably come across six links to elsewhere in the cloud with more detailed information on Van Gogh and other artists from his time, including a visit to the BBC's own archive.

Vincent And The Doctor Previewed

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 09:30 PM PDT

Warning – This preview contains spoilers. If in doubt do not read.

"Is this how time usually passes?"

Vincent and the Doctor is written by Richard CurtisVincent And The Doctor is the long-awaited episode from Richard Curtis, the man who helped bring Blackadder to the small screen, wrote the script that launched Hugh Grant's cinematic career and is a driving force behind Comic Relief. Many will probably assume that his background in comedy will bring a light touch to Doctor Who. Well they may be slightly disappointed as this is a rather dark and unpredictable episode which takes a historical figure and places him into rather bizarre and chilling circumstances.

Terror lurks in the cornfields of Provence, but only a sad and lonely painter can see it. Amy Pond finds herself shoulder to shoulder with Vincent Van Gogh, in a battle with a deadly alien.

Touching, sentimental, bleak and at times whimsical this is not a traditional Doctor Who episode, much in the same way Love & Monsters wasn't and will split the audience right down the middle. I can almost hear the discussions and vigorous chat and debate from fans as I type this preview. Containing many of the writer's trademark touches such as light comedy, human emotion and love, the story may at first seem slight but it is actually an incredibly deep episode which looks at the darker side of creativity.

The small ensemble are forced to face up to demons both personal and possibly real with measured gusto. Matt and Karen are in supporting roles here as Tony Curran takes centre stage, embracing the role of Van Gogh painting the artist larger than life with bold, colourful strokes. Bill Nighy (a man often connected with the role of the Doctor) pops up as a Curator, a rather charming and polished cameo played, as you'd expect, to his usual perfection.

Vincent And The Doctor is not the episode I was expecting, but after the action packed Silurian two parter, this is just what the series needs to help ease us into the final stretch.

YouTubing It #12

Do you like Doctor Who? Do you like anime? Do you like the idea of anime with Doctor Who? Well, even if you don’t you’re going to love the work of British artist Paul “OtaKing” Johnston, who has been putting together a Doctor Who anime short. Here are some excerpts of his work in progress which are, frankly, amazing—even if the sight of an Anime Third Doctor takes some getting used to.

Why they haven’t hired him to animate the missing episodes of The Ice Warriors is beyond me…

Manning's walk for life

Posted: 03 Jun 2010 08:28 PM PDT

Katy ManningFormer Doctor Who companion Katy Manning will be doing the Crusaid Walk For Life this Sunday, 6th June, in London.

Manning played Jo Grant, assistant to the third Doctor, Jon Pertwee, from 1971-1973, and will return to the character when she stars alongside new Doctor Matt Smith in The Sarah Jane Adventures later this year.

She volunteered to do the walk with the deputy editor of GT magazine, Darren Scott, when she heard he had agreed to do the walk in a novelty Dalek costume. Referring to her infamous naked Dalek photoshoot from the 70s, she joked that the pair should recreate the pose, albeit fully clothed.

Crusaid's Walk for Life is Europe's largest fundraising walk for HIV and AIDS. The pair can be sponsored via the event website.
