The Hungry Earth has debuted in Australia to excellent ratings. TV Tonight reports that the episode averaged 914,000 viewers in the five major capital cities, again despite stiff competition from the commercial networks. However, it was not the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's top-rating program of the day, instead coming a close second to a new episode of Agatha Christie's Poirot which averaged 926,000 viewers. The corresponding Confidential Cutdown also rated a solid 635,000 viewers in the five major capitals.

BAFTA TARDIS

Posted: 06 Jun 2010 06:31 AM PDT

Doctor Who - the TARDIS at BAFTAAs reported by the official BAFTA Twitter feed today, a police box has been snapped on the red carpet at the television awards event in London.

Broadcast on BBC One this evening, the event is intended to honour those that have made a positive contribution to television over the past 12 months – although for some reason a "Special Award" is being given to Simon Cowell. So much for "positive".

In the nominations department, Doctor Who doesn't get a look-in – nothing for David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Bernard Cribbins, or any of the new series cast and crew.

Which begs the question:

Why is the TARDIS there at all? With no nominations for Doctor Who – and the only obvious interest in Suranne Jones (Mona Lisa's Revenge in the most recent series of The Sarah Jane Adventures) and Sophie Okonedo (Liz 10 in The Beast Below) – it can only be for promotional or "big announcement" purposes.

Time will tell…

The Lodger Preview

Posted: 06 Jun 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Assuming the episode is still called The Lodger by the time we get to Saturday (apparently "Don't Go Up The Stairs" has also been a title), here's a preview of the next episode of Doctor Who.

James Corden and Matt Smith in Doctor Who - The LodgerStarring Matt Smith as the Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, The Lodger also stars James Corden (Gavin & Stacey, as if you needed telling), and is the episode from which images of Matt Smith and Corden photographed playing football originate – right on time to coincide with the World Cup!

There's a house on Aickman road, and a staircase that people go up, but never down, as the time-travelling drama continues.

To solve the mystery of the man upstairs, the Doctor faces his greatest challenge yet – he must pass himself off as a perfectly normal human being, and share a flat with Craig Owens.

The Lodger originated in an edition of Doctor Who Magazine in 2006; in that version, the Tenth Doctor stayed with Mickey for a week while the TARDIS drifted with Rose on board. Both versions are by Gareth Roberts (The Unicorn and the Wasp).

Catch Doctor Who on BBC One or the simulcast on the BBC HD channel (Freesat 108, Freeview 50, Sky 143 and Virgin 108) on Saturday, 12th June at 6.45pm

It’s in the Bag!

HMV expects rush of Doctor Who fans to bag limited edition paper carrier

Doctor Who DVD BagTo celebrate Monday's release of Doctor Who: Series 5, Volume 1 on DVD and Blu-ray – the first to feature Matt Smith as the new Doctor – HMV and 2Entertain have joined forces to produce a limited edition paper carrier bag, which will be available exclusively to HMV customers at selected stores around the country, commencing 7 June 2010.

The full-colour carrier features Doctor Matt Smith and his assistant Amy Pond played by Karen Gillan on one side and a Dalek on the reverse, and both HMV and 2Entertain hope the carrier will prove a real hit with collectors and fans of the show.

Volume 1 of the new series starring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan includes the first 3 episodes:

1. The Eleventh Hour
2. The Beast Below
3. Victory of the Daleks

The Doctor Who Series 5 Volume 1 DVD and Blu-ray also includes a special feature: The Monster Diaries, produced by the team behind Doctor Who Confidential.

HMV stores are preparing for a rush from Monday morning, and the special loop-handled and reinforced bags measuring 43cm x 32cm will be given out with purchases of the new Doctor Who DVD and Blu-ray as well as other titles on a first-come-first-served basis, whilst stocks last. As per standard HMV policy, customers can decline use of a bag if they do not require one.

Doctor Who DVD BagHMV Marketing Planner for DVD & Blu-ray, Ben Grunbaum, comments:

"We love getting our customers closer to the music, film and games that they themselves love, and in recent years we've produced a number of limited edition papers bags featuring designs and images from the icons of today's popular culture – everyone from the likes of Madonna to Avatar.

"These have all proved a great hit and tend to get snapped up pretty quickly, but I imagine the Doctor Who carriers will be our most popular ever design and won't be instore for too long. If you're not quick off the mark, you'll probably have to rely on time travel to bag one!"

As you can see, the bags look great!

However, if you're not able to pickup a copy of the Doctor Who Series 5 Vol 1 DVD or Blu-Ray from HMV, both formats are available from Amazon – pick up the the DVD for £9.91 while the Blu-ray is available for just £12.91!
