Tom’s Haunted Britain

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 09:35 AM PDT

Doctor Who legend Tom Baker has updated his official website with the latest happenings in his life. The Bohemian Fourth Doctor started by revealing he has written a foreword to the new AA book of Haunted Britain:
Tom Baker IS the Doctor!

"It's a very beautiful book, revealing the sites of nearly 200 ghosts throughout Britain. These ghosts have been detected in many of Britain's historic buildings, stately homes and castles, its ancient inns, theatres, farmhouses and cottages. From the most famous ancient sites to lesser-known recently haunted buildings, each location has been painstakingly researched."

Tom then had some wonderful new photographs taken by Oliver McNeil, who has captured the manic and yet dignified man that portrayed one of the most popular Doctors:

"In his little cave I tried to suggest mystery and joy, and I thought of sharing a glass of wine with the fans."

Finally, Tom relaxes after his busy schedule and takes his beloved dog Poppy for a walk during which he took the time to entertain his neighbours:

"Andy, the farmer, and his son Joss laughed at my jokes which made me full of good humour."

A busy time for Tom but it's great to see him still doing his thing.

You can read the detailed exploits at www.tom-baker.co.uk.

Vincent and the Doctor Reviewed

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 08:33 AM PDT

Doctor Who - Vincent and the Doctor, with Tony CurranLast week's Doctor Who left us with such a heart breaker, with poor Rory no longer among the existing, let along the living, and Amy no longer having any idea of the love that she once had. I can't tell you how gutted I was to see Cold Blood end in this way – so naturally I would have been extremely annoyed if the tragedy had been skated over in the next episode, in a slot that we have traditionally come to recognise as that held for the low-budget Doctor-lite stories.

I am happy to say that Vincent and the Doctor did not let me down. In fact, my expectations were exceeded when they gave us another touching story, subtly referring to Amy's loss from the last story.

This is a huge testament to the main cast that they can portray a wide range of emotions extremely convincingly. But then you would expect that from leading actors Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, so what's more impressive is the casting of Tony Curran as Vincent Van Gogh. What a stoke of luck that the Doctor Who production team were able to hire an actor who looked like a dead ringer for Van Gogh and who can act his socks off.

From beginning to end we were taken through all the emotional ranges a human can possess and never once did it seem too much or to be over-reaching. By the end of the story, despite the sad themes and real life end of one of the worlds most impressive impressionists, we – the viewers – walked away with a very uplifting feeling. And again, despite the sadness of the story it was a great contrast to last weeks ending.

Doctor Who - Vincent and the Doctor, with Tony CurranFull credit must go to writer Richard Curtis, of whose vast body of work I am not that familiar with outside of Blackadder. But just like Steven Moffatt before him, his Doctor Who work proved to me that a good writer is a good writer. Pitching a Doctor Who story of an impressionist painter with depression and actually making it all the way to filming on that idea shows true conviction by the artist and his work. Which parallels nicely with Vincent Van Gogh. He knew his pieces were worthy; otherwise he would not have continued painting and trying to sell them.

Vincent and the Doctor's location filming added a visual richness to the overall look, which coupled with the perfect (minimal) use of CGI made me forget about the oft-discussed BBC budget cuts. Croatia certainly is a beautiful and versatile place.

What's interesting still, as if you can cram more interesting into this weeks episode, is the lack of the usual story links that have been building up. Both the Cracks in space and time and the Silence were missing, although the effect of at least one of them was still being felt. Unless there was something that we missed? You won't have to twist my arm to get me to watch this one again, so I'll be keeping a close eye for any little hints of things to come myself.

Doctor Who - Vincent and the Doctor, with Tony CurranTen episodes in and with each new episode Matt Smith is showing us more and more why he was the only man for the job. His portrayal of the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor is rapidly moving up the ranks in my favorites list. And for an actor whose name was never even connected with the role until he was announced says a lot. But there was another actor connected to the role for years who makes an unforgettable appearance in this story: Bill Nighy. Playing the Musee d'Orsee Curator, Dr Black, Bill is responsible for one of the story's most moving scenes. At the beginning I honestly felt that they had wasted his talents with what I thought was nothing more than a funny cameo, but then in the end his role became just as important as the episodes other three main players.

In the end, what we were given in Vincent and the Doctor was not just another adventure in the lives of the Doctor and his faithful companion, but an awareness of a real life struggle for many in the world today, yesterday and sadly tomorrow as well. We were shown how depression can affect not only the people suffering from it, but also how it can affect the people around them – the people who love them.

Most of all, Doctor Who this week showed us that no matter how hard we may try to help someone in need, sometimes the battle to get better just can't be won. And that no matter how much we may blame ourselves for not doing enough or not being there, that at the end of the day we did what we could and so long as we never stopped trying, we have made a difference in their lives.

TV with a message for making the world a better place, that's what I like to see.

7/6/2010

International partnership secures new series of Torchwood.

BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Worldwide and US premium entertainment network Starz Entertainment have today announced a three-way co-production partnership that will develop a new series of the hit BBC sci-fi drama Torchwood. BBC Worldwide will also distribute the series to broadcasters globally.

The 10-episode instalment will be written by a team led by Torchwood creator Russell T Davies and produced by BBC Worldwide productions.

Davies and BBC Worldwide Productions' SVP Scripted, Julie Gardner, return as executive producers with BBC Worldwide Productions EVP Jane Tranter. The series has been commissioned by Controller BBC One, Jay Hunt, Controller BBC Drama, Ben Stephenson and Starz President and CEO, Chris Albrecht.

While previous series were based on location in Cardiff, Wales, this new instalment will see storylines widen to include locations in the US and around the world.

Announcing the commission, Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, said: "We have a long history of working with many US networks, but it is incredibly exciting to be working with Starz for the first time, as well as to be reunited with the best of British in Russell, Jane and Julie.

"Torchwood will burst back onto the screen with a shocking and moving story with global stakes and locations that will make it feel bigger and bolder than ever."

Jane Tranter, EVP, BBC Worldwide Productions, added: "Torchwood has attracted remarkable attention and loyalty in both the UK and US, and in this new partnership with Starz, the next chapter will not only reward our current fans, but also introduce new viewers to the most impressive instalment yet.

"We're committed to programming exceptional television that is entertaining, imaginative and provides a premium TV experience, and by any measure the new concept for Torchwood fits that mandate."

Starz, LLC, President and CEO Chris Albrecht, said: "I've been part of successful partnerships with Jane Tranter and the BBC previously, and I'm very much looking forward to working with them again."

Torchwood is a drama that puts extraterrestrial threats into a very real world, and asks how humanity deals with the danger – while fighting mankind's darkest instincts. The series was originally commissioned and produced in 2006 by BBC Cymru Wales, with the latest high octane series capturing UK audiences of more than 6million.

BBC Worldwide has distributed previous Torchwood series around the world to territories such as Korea, Japan, Italy, Spain, Israel, Russia and across Latin America.

Torchwood International!

TorchwoodThe BBC have announced that a new series of Torchwood will be produced by the BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide, and US network Starz Entertainment.

The series will see John Barrowman and Eve Myles reprise their roles of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen, and will comprise of ten episodes overseen by series creator Russell T Davies. Other former cast members (like Gwen's husband Rhys played by Kai Owen) have yet to be confirmed, but new faces will appear in the team, with adventures taking place around the world.

Says Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning:
We have a long history of working with many U.S. networks but it is incredibly exciting to be working with Starz for the first time, as well as to be reunited with the best of British in Russell, Jane and Julie. Torchwood will burst back onto the screen with a shocking and moving story with global stakes and locations that will make it feel bigger and bolder than ever.

Jane Tranter, EVP, BBC Worldwide Productions:
Torchwood has attracted remarkable attention and loyalty in both the UK and U.S., and in this new partnership with Starz, the next chapter will not only reward our current fans, but also introduce new viewers to the most impressive instalment yet.

Chris Albrecht, LLC, President and CEO of Starz:
We're committed to programming exceptional television that is entertaining, imaginative and provides a premium TV experience, and by any measure the new concept for Torchwood fits that mandate. I've been part of successful partnerships with Jane Tranter and the BBC previously, and I'm very much looking forward to working with them again.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Albrecht added:
It was too good an opportunity to pass up. Each season of the show, the show has evolved and "The Children of Earth" was terrific as evident in it was just named a Television Critics Press Awards nominee. I'm interested in doing sci-fi and what I like a lot about "Torchwood" is it's a very classic sci-fi entry. It's all about the story, it's not about big effects. I thought "Children of Earth" evolved the franchise to a place where it could continue to evolve on pay TV with an American partner that could bring more production resources.

At the end of "Children of Earth" Torchwood was destroyed, so when we pick up in our world the need for Torchwood arises again. A lot of this story takes place in the U.S. as well with several characters that are in the U.S. intelligence forces and end up teaming up with Gwen and Captain Jack to deal with the situation at hand.

The Hollywood Reporter also spoke to Russell T Davies:
It's very much the next step. It's not a new version, it's not a reboot. We're simply moving countries. The show was previously a format show -- monster of the week. The breakthrough was "Children of Earth" and that it became one long story. It's not going to be 'Lost' and take 20 years to find out what's going on. It's going to have a most remarkable conclusion after 10 episodes.

We're simply going to tell a good story. I wrote the pilot 7 months ago irregardless of network. BBC1 is a prime-time channel, but a brave channel. I don't worry about content.

No date for production and eventual broadcast for the series has been announced, though some media sources have suggested it premiering during Summer 2011.

Iconic Time Lord Tom Baker has been a busy boy these past few months. The writer, actor and voice over artist has been lending his distinct vocals to a new ad campaign for Nationwide.

Tom Baker is the greatest star of Doctor Who. Ever. FACTThe former Doctor will reprise his role as the narrator of Little Britain in a series of ads that see the return of popular characters Andy and Lou, Vicky Pollard and Emily and Florence.

One of the ads, airing May 24th was designed to showcase Nationwide's sponsorship of the England football team will feature Lou, the long suffering career of supposedly wheelchair bound Andy, talking to Fabio Capello as unbeknownst to him Andy takes on Theo Walcott (ha!), Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch before scoring past David James.

Tom was pleased to reprise his role once again;

"Big Britain has turned to Little Britain to inspire us to Glory. The visuals of the three commercials are wonderfully funny. I should know because the BOYS wrote my script."

The BBC Exterminates the World!

Doctor Who - The Adventure Games kicks off with City of the DaleksChances are you know by now that the official release of City of the Daleks, the first installment of the planned series of interactive episodes entitled Doctor Who: The Adventure Games, was last Saturday, but only for the Windows-using population of the United Kingdom. Since then, all across the web, both Whovians from the not-UK and Brits who sympathize with the Whovians from the not-UK have expressed disappointment in the Beeb's closing the curtains, at least for now, on the rest of the world. For example, a Doctor Who Blog contributor wearing the username Graeme wrote a furious rant critique from a Canadian point-of-view expressing disappointment with the current system:

"I get that the BBC and its website are designed to solely service the license payer. I don't agree—I think the Internet should be bigger than such parochial concerns, but I'm a futurist at heart. Fine."

Being an American Whovian myself, I can't help but feel similarly slighted by the current shape of the BBC's international agenda; therefore I will vent my frustrations to the wonderfully understanding Kasterborous community, effective immediately.

First order of business: The licence fee? Really? Look, I understand that those who don't pay should not receive the same benefits as those who do. But, BBC, why don't you give us the opportunity? It's not that we don't shell out our cash to experience the trove of services provided by you, it's more that we can't.

Doctor Who - City of the Daleks is currently only available in the UK

Before any readers dismiss me as an ignorant Yankee, let me make one bit clear – I'm not asking the BBC to allow me to pay the licence fee. I understand that the collection of such taxes are the government's problem, not the corporation's, and that it applies to all British television, not just the BBC's. I have no desire to give any cash to a foreign government in order to be granted a few entertainment improvements in my life provided not by a coalition, but by a broadcaster.

After all, who's going to get all the money from City of the Daleks when it is "available to purchase in early July?" Certainly not any entities led by David Cameron. It's the BBC that's selling the game to the world. It's the BBC that's getting the money from the commercial interruptions during the American broadcasts of Doctor Who and other British programmes. So why can't the BBC charge some sort of fee of its own to the international audience that wants to, at the very least, use some of the most basic features of its website, like watching video clips or downloading equivalent-of-an-episode Doctor Who video games?

Yes, there are international copyright laws in place and if a misstep is taken somewhere on the ocean-crossing tightrope of media protection, doom could be spelled for us all, and the planet would basically explode. It's a problem that would take an effort to fix, and we wouldn't want to make anyone get their hands dirty for once, would we?

But it's not the geo-lock that gets me. It's the fact that, after five years of nuWho, the air dates between the UK and the rest of the world are still not in sync. In fact, despite pledges to draw the string of new episode premieres around the world tighter together, BBC America has shown symptoms of significantly extending the gap, in accordance with a recent wave of bad moves on the part of the network, including excessive hunger for ratings-boosting marathons, Star Trek fever, and the appointment of a new company executive, Herb Scannell, an MTV veteran who has already pledged to create more US-produced shows for the network using the "DNA of the BBC."

Doctor Who - City of the Daleks is currently only available in the UK

Significant measures that could be taken to reduce illegal downloading of Doctor Who television-made and computer-ready stories are being largely ignored, and as a result, the international pirates desperate to replace their Black Pearl with the infinitely more sleek TARDIS are swashbuckling their way into Trojan horses, while BBC America could be in danger of losing some of its commercial revenue because its potential audience is using the internet to catch each episode three weeks early.

Releasing to separate countries on separate dates is a lose-lose situation. The distributor loses money to torrents, and the pirates lose their computers to viruses. Wouldn't it be simpler to debut Doctor Who everywhere all at once? Even if it does cost international residents a little extra dough, disappointed fans such as myself would find themselves with quite a lot less to complain about.

If the BBC wants to make Doctor Who a phenomenon around the world, shouldn't it start by making Doctor Who available around the world?

Doctor Who – The Adventure Games: City of the Daleks

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games - City of the Daleks

Creating a great Doctor Who game was never going to be easy. The potential user base is so huge that it's bound to be impossible to cater to everyone. However this is a pretty good stab at it.

First let's talk about what it's not. It's not a huge sandbox of a game. It's small and the plot runs on rails. There are puzzles but it's not a classic puzzler. It's not a First Person Shooter, though some of the sneaking will be familiar to FPS fans. It's not a platformer as you can't fall off stuff but some of the three dimensional puzzle solving is similar. It's is very much it's own thing and what it mostly resembles is an episode of Doctor Who.

And it would make a pretty good episode of Doctor Who. It starts very well. There is some lovely dialogue between Amy and the Doctor in the TARDIS leading up to that great staple of Classic Who: stepping out of the TARDIS to find that they are definitely not where they expected to be. This moment is then topped by wonderful "Ooh crap!" moment that I wont spoil for you and into the opening titles. The actual plot is simple but engaging. The Daleks are messing with the fundamental nature of time in a way that makes the Doctor very cross and threatens the continuing existence of the Universe. It's up to the Doctor and Amy Pond to stop them and this is where the player comes in.

The basic mechanic of the game is a like a simplified FPS crossed with a point and click adventure. You explore your 3D environment by moving the Doctor and/or Amy around using the mouse or the cursor keys. You interact with your environment by right clicking whenever something glows. If you get stuck you can talk to Amy or hit the Esc key to pause and be reminded of your current objective. You can pick things up and combine them with other objects in your environment and the Doctor always carries his Sonic Screwdriver.

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games - City of the Daleks

Some objects simply move the Doctor and the plot along but some trigger much more complicated interactions. This is the puzzle element of the game. I play a lot of puzzle games and I was expecting the puzzle element to be one of the weaker areas. After all many of the gamers will be young or inexperienced. The puzzles were fairly well integrated and well explained. At no point did I find myself unsure of what I was supposed to be doing. However these puzzles are not easy. The first puzzle, re-wiring a an electrical panel, took me a good 20 minutes on my own. When I re-played it with my son he easily understood how the puzzle should work but found it very hard to crack. If he had been playing alone he might have given up.

But not everything that you can interact with has anything to do with the plot. This is Doctor Who after all. It's not just thrilling science fiction it's educational. Some objects don't help advance the plot but instead trigger facts. You can learn about history, science and classic Doctor Who. There are also 'collectables' – virtual cards featuring previous Doctors, enemies, friends, and companions.

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games - City of the Daleks

Let's get technical. Will it run on your system? Actually it probably will unless you are using a netbook. The download page has its own system checker which seems to be fairly reliable. I first tried the game on my netbook and although the netbook exceeded the minimum specs the game didn't so much run on it as crawl. Next I tried my old laptop which passed the system check easily (much to my surprise as it's practically steam powered). The game ran surprisingly well. If you too have an older machine then I would suggest defragging the hard drive after downloading the game and turning off everything that runs in the background.

So you've downloaded the game and you've got it running. Will you enjoy it? I think so. I certainly did and so did my kids. Even with minimal quality graphics it's absolutely gorgeous. The sound is stunning and the music perfect. The voice acting is everything you'd expect from the BBC. The animation is good. The game play is exhilarating and infuriating by turns, but mostly in a good way. Perhaps the most impressive thing is the way the whole thing integrates. The puzzles make sense and you care enough about the plot to want to succeed and when you hear that triumphant music it feels great. Even the frustration of being shot by the Daleks again feels kind of good when it stops. Though I think my kids learned a few new words.

I have very few criticisms and it seems churlish to mention those at all when the game is free but here goes. Some of the puzzles are repetitive, too hard for younger gamers and there's no way to skip them. There's also no way to skip the cut scenes. Many will feel there is too much sneaking around and not enough running down corridors but some will find that pleasingly reminiscent of Classic Who. It's really annoying when Amy or the Doctor get hung up on any object more than six inches high but at least they can't fall off things.

My conclusion? If you have room on your hard drive then download it now. And if you don't then go and delete something.
