Who’s for Torchwood?

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 06:34 AM PDT

Torchwood's Gwen Coooper is played by Eve MylesSo, Torchwood Series 4 has been announced and will hopefully commence filming soon. It's going to be a co-production between BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide and US cable channel Starz (who have just released Spartacus: Blood and Sand). John Barrowman is back as Captain Jack and Eva Myles is returning as Gwen Cooper.

But with most of the original cast killed off within the first 3 series, the rumours have started to churn of who will star alongside the lead actors. In its TV and Radio blog, The Guardian have started the rumour mill with a huge list of American actors that they feel would fit into the show. To name a few:

-James Marsters (Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Captain John Hart in Torchwood Series 2)

-Eliza Dushku (Faith in Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

-Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly)

-Seth Green (Scott Evil in Austin Powers)

-Dominic Monaghan (Charlie in Lost, Merry in The Lord of the Rings trilogy)

-Kiefer Sutherland (Jack Bauer in 24)

Not to mention some of the characters that were introduced in Torchwood: Children of Earth

Whilst all these actors would be great if they appeared, the first order should really be to establish who the writers will be. Russell T Davies should definitely pen an episode and maybe even invite some other talented Doctor Who writers to join the fold, namely: Paul Cornell, Stephen Moffat, Gareth Roberts and Mark Gatis. Most of these writers contributed to some gritty stories to The New Adventures range in the 1990's and could no doubt do well without having the family friendly conditions of Doctor Who to write for.

Slimline “Wilkie” Dalek Auction

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 05:17 AM PDT

Doctor Who - Evil of the DaleksAn original narrow-based 'Wilkie' Dalek is to be auctioned at Bonhams of London on the Wednesday, 23rd June.

The 'Wilkie' Dalek – named after designer Bernard Wilkie, co-founder of the BBC Visual Effects Department – was designed for the Troughton era episodes The Evil of the Daleks and was rumoured to have a narrower skirt in order to travel through ordinary sized doors on the set.

In the 70's Wilkie rediscovered his creation in a skip outside Ealing studios.

The Dalek, repaired for Exhibition purposes has been on display at the Doctor Who Museum in Blackpool which closed last year.

According to Dalek 6388, the 'thin' Dalek is an amalgamation of the Evil skirt and the gun box shoulder section from the redesigned Daleks of the Peter Cushing movies.

The item – along with a host of other Doctor Who merchandise both old and new – is expected to raise between £2,000- £3,000.

Evil of the Daleks was set to be the final ever appearance of Doctor Who's greatest villains. Writer and Dalek creator Terry Nation was busily trying to sell the concept to American Television and wanted to give them a final send off from the series – only for Producer Innes Lloyd to insert a light globe inside the smouldering ruins of the Emperor Dalek, suggesting that their were still confrontations to come.

Sadly, Evil of the Daleks was wiped from the BBC's archives in the early 1970s.

Only a telerecording of episode 2 remains, returned to the archive in May 1987 after being found at a car boot sale a few years earlier,

A second version with alternative narration was released in 2003. A home movie of the filming of the Dalek battle sequence exists and is included on the DVD of The Tomb of the Cybermen.

Click here to see all the Doctor Who items at Bonhams, and head over to Dalek 6388 for a complete look at the history of the Dalek props up until 1988.

Heroes and Villains and Nazis, Oh My!

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 04:00 AM PDT

Torchwood star John BarrowmanIt has long been known that one of the reasons for Christopher Eccleston's departure from Doctor Who five years ago related to his personal worries of being typecast. Digital Spy has now reported similar desires to not be only recognized for playing one kind of role on the part of John Barrowman, our beloved Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Who and Torchwood. Fear not – everyone's favourite immortal Earth-defender isn't going anywhere anytime soon… for Barrowman has also revealed that he is simply not concerned about the matter:

"I can do theatre, telly, singing – it's all part of my business. I think people will be able to separate what I do. They've seen me play heroic Captain Jack [in Torchwood and Doctor Who] and a very camp Nazi in The Producers. The baddie [in Desperate Housewives] is just another rung on the ladder."

What he says is fairly agreeable. Considering that it feels like Barrowman has appeared in nearly every programme on Television in the UK and now seems to be starting to make a similar move in the US with Desperate Housewives and the next season of Torchwood, typecast is an adjective that should be applied to Barrowman the least.

You can see how Barrowman performs his latest role, as villain Patrick Logan for American import Desperate Housewives, by tuning in to Channel 4 at 10:35PM tonight. Or, if you live in the US, you can watch his most recent episode here.

Tennant’s Fright Night

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 01:55 AM PDT

Former Doctor Who star David Tennant to appear in Fright Night remakeFrom Time Lord, to agoraphobic Lawyer and now Vampire Hunter – David Tennant clearly isn't a man to rest on his laurels.

The Time Lord victorious has signed on to appear in the remake of cult 1985 horror film Fright Night, about an avid horror fan who becomes convinced Vampires have moved in to his neighbourhood.

He'll be playing Peter Vincent, Vegas magician and self proclaimed Vampire expert whose show revolves around Horror Movie imagery. The role was originally played by the late Roddy McDowell (Planet of the Apes).

Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) will play horror fan Charlie who becomes convinced that his neighbour Jerry Dandrige, Colin Farrell (Miami Vice) is a Vampire. McLovin himself Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad) also features as Charlie's best friend Evil Ed.

It is also rumoured that the film will not only be produced by Dreamworks owner Steven Spielberg but also narrated by the great beard himself.

The Dreamworks film will mark Tennants first foray into America after Rex is Not Your Lawyer failed to be picked up by NBC.

Whether or not the film can overcome its status as a remake and dodge audience apathy for all thinks fang toothed remains to be seen.

Unless you've been out of the country for the last few days, you should be aware that a new 10-part series of Torchwood has been commissioned, with Russell T Davies leading a team of writers.

Davies – who created the show in 2006 and has been developing a new series for several months - has been popping up on TV over the past few days to discuss this great news which will hopefully see the series (a co-production between BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide and Starz Entertainment) build on the success of the superb Children of Earth.

Russell T Davies spoke earlier this week to BBC News about the new series, the return of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper (John Barrowman and Eve Myles) as well as the show's new globetrotting remit.

We're pleased to announce a special Dark Shadows release for June, joining the bumper crop of releases for the series this summer. Dark Shadows: Music From the Audio Dramas collects the best of Nigel Fairs' haunting scores for the Dramatic Readings on one hour-long CD.

"I'm very flattered and excited to be asked to put together a compilation of some of my incidental music," comments Nigel. "I've had great fun composing for Dark Shadows. The scripts and performances are all very classy, which inspires you to go the extra mile with the scores."

Post production on the new full-cast Dark Shadows serial Kingdom of the Dead was recently completed, and we are pleased to announce that Sam Watts joins the series as music composer, and has also scored June's Dark Shadows Dramatic Reading The Night Whispers. Sam is best known for his work on all three series of The Sarah Jane Adventures. "It's been great fun working on Dark Shadows," says Sam. "It's great to work in a different style. I don't often get to write traditional horror, and I've had a chance to put my own spin on it with these episodes."

Paul McGann in "Luther"

Not sure if you've seen it, but this is kind of crazy and out of control. Idris Elba is phenomenal, as we know, but McGann's character is fantastic too and it's the best he's been in years.  Definitely worth your time:
