Posted: 17 Jun 2010 09:16 AM PDT Reaction to The Lodger has been overwhelmingly positive, with some surprising sources coming out in favour of the most recent episode of Doctor Who. We start with Gavin Fuller in the Telegraph, who last week bizarrely slated Vincent and the Doctor. This time around he was far more positive – no doubt a result of bothering to watch…
More positive words spill forth from The Guardian, for what is effectively a low budget episode with very little CGI work.
The Guardian also refers to the Doctor singing the same song in the show as his third incarnation sang in a similar situation in 1970's Spearhead From Space. Quick final note about The Guardian – their Doctor Who reviews this year have been a great read, if you have the time hop on over and cycle through them all. Elsewhere online, Outpost Skaro have a unique but considered opinion of the Doctor's "fish out of water" role in The Lodger.
Awarding 3.5 stars meanwhile is SFX – surely time to drop the star ratings, they can be so divisive! SFX felt the episode was "mid-table" and the football metaphors didn't end there. However the problem with SFX reviews this season has been less about the score and more about the lack of content.
Despite the surprising story conclusion to The Lodger, Den of Geek weren't that impressed with the episode either, describing it as a "holding episode":
Which brings us to The Yorker, where Lois Cameron lists 11 things she liked about The Lodger, starting with the surprising success of the love-him-or-hate-him guest srar, James Corden:
Finally, overnight audience figures as reported by Gallifrey News Base were disappointing, but not as low as one might expect in the face of ITV1's build-up to England's first match of the World Cup, which kicked off at 7.30pm. The Lodger attracted an average of 4.6 million viewers, with 4.31 million watching on BBC One and an additional 0.25 million on BBC HD. Impacted by 11 million viewers tuning into ITV1 from 7.15pm, Doctor Who saw its lowest audience share this series, down to 22.3%. Note that these are overnight figures, the adjustment of which will see increases once delayed viewing is factored in. Additionally, they note that the Appreciation Index figure for the episode was 87, one of the highest so far this series.

Moffat: “Stephen loves Doctor Who” Posted: 17 Jun 2010 07:05 AM PDT In the fight for quality drama there can be only one winner; Doctor Who! Enter the arena, Steven Moffat; who has retaliated to claims by erudite sparring partner Stephen Fry of the 'infantilism' of British TV- by defending Doctor Who as a show for the whole family. Moffat responding to claims by Fry that shows like Doctor Who and Merlin were 'Chicken Nuggets' at the BAFTA screening of The Pandorica Opens, said that the high end show could not be compared to 'junk food'.
He also joked that Fry was just trying to sound 'grown up'. Stephen Fry criticised the BBC at the Annual BAFTA Television Lecture yesterday, commenting that the old Auntie Beeb should make adult dramas that were not 'pompous and 'academic' but that 'surprised' and 'astonished' audiences. Which in Moffat's and most Who fans sounds vaguely like a certain 13 part series that airs on Saturday nights.
Fry was scheduled to write an episode of Who for the second series but the un-produced script was dropped and replaced by (2006 episode) Fear Her, the lowest ranking episode of the new breed of Who in the Doctor Who Magazine poll of the 200 best episodes – coming in a lowly 192nd . Fry also played the role of The Minister of Chance in 2001's Seventh Doctor Webcast series Death Comes to Time. The Pandorica Opens airs this Saturday at 18:40 on BBC 1 and BBC HD. (Via PA)

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 04:54 AM PDT Are you a Mac user who has felt shunned because of the extra two weeks' wait time for City of the Daleks? If so, it's time to rest easy, because the next portal to 1963 London is now standing by for departure whenever you choose! Most likely, the word "whenever" probably corresponds with the word "now" if you're any sort of Whovian Mac user with a United Kingdom citizenship! But beware: if you're using an Apple computer that was manufactured pre-2006, you'll be left in the dust; Doctor Who: The Adventure Games will only be available on Macs with Intel processors. Also, if you're running OS 10.4 (Tiger) or earlier, you may find a few bugs or have trouble playing the game altogether. Not to worry! An update will be released in the near future that should take care of it. Unfortunately, there's no more news as yet about the international release. Hang in there, foreign enthusiasts, and remember, you'll be able to purchase the first adventure in early July! With over half a million copies of City of the Daleks downloaded already, Steven Moffat set to give the general public a first look at the next installment (expected to feature the Cybermen!) this Tuesday, and titles for the Nintendo Wii and DS in the works, the Platinum Age seems to have expanded into the gaming realm, finally allowing for regular Doctor Who interactivity the proper way! For more information about City of the Daleks, you can read our review here.
Posted: 17 Jun 2010 04:41 AM PDT The final episode of the current series of Doctor Who, The Big Bang, will be shown at 6.05pm according to the BBC Press Office. The programme will run for 55 minutes, 10 minutes longer than normal. The early start is to avoid clashing with one of the two World Cup matches taking place on the day. One match will be on BBC One and one on ITV, but which on which will not be determined until the results of the first round matches are known the day before transmission. If England win their group, their match will be shown immediately after Doctor Who on BBC One. ITV1 will be offering You've Been Framed! in opposition to the Doctor, with BBC Two offering Tennis as the first week of Wimbledon 2010 draws to an end. Channel 4 has Come Dine with Me while Five offers the 1970 film Chisum, staring John Wayne.

The Adventure Games gets 500k downloads Posted: 17 Jun 2010 04:05 AM PDT The Adventure Games gets 500k downloads News Dated: 17/6/2010 The BBC has announced that the first episode of its Doctor Who game has been downloaded over 500,000 times, with the next episode on the way. Episode one of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games, which features the voices of Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, has received 524,299 download requests in its first 12 days of availability. The Doctor Who website hosting the online game has also seen a 67% week-on-week increase in its unique visitor numbers in the UK. Simon Nelson, head of the BBC's multiplatform in vision team, said that he is "thrilled" to gain over half a million downloads for the episode in such a short time. Nelson said that the project has been a "real labour of love" and so he is glad to receive "universal praise" from the Doctor Who fans. "It's clear we've got people playing these interactive episodes who wouldn't ordinarily play through a computer game - and the opportunity to actually be the Doctor is hugely appealing," he said. "Whilst the 67% increase in UK visitors to the Doctor Who website is a combination of factors - not least the excellent Vincent Van Gogh section which complements episode 10 - the adventure games page was a significant destination." On June 22, Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat will unveil the game's second episode at a BBC Learning evening in Scotland. The new episode will apparently feature "some of the Doctor's most fearsome enemies". Moffat said that the way the game has captured the look and feel of the science fiction television series is "amazing". "Matt Smith walks like a drunken giraffe on-screen and also in-game - it's a virtuoso virtual performance, and one I'm delighted is proving to be so popular. Just worried I won't get any writing done, what with playing the game all the time," he said. "Karen is a staggering companion - literally, have you seen her when the Tardis shakes? - and her personality is perfectly captured in these episodes. There are some genuinely funny lines between the two, so we've really brought the TV series into the control of families up and down the country. Half a million download requests in 12 days - amazing." [Source: Digital Spy]
