A Special Anniversary Event?

Gallifreyan Embassy's 2nd Anniversary Cake

As you already know if you read my previous post (It Was 25 Years Ago Today…), that today marks the 25th anniversary of the Gallifreyan Embassy.

Over the past few months we have been discussing having some sort of special anniversary event to mark the occasion this year. You may remember last year we held an event in Manhattan for our 24th anniversary in which we paired up with a monthly DWNY meet up and brought the lovely Daphne Ashbrook (Dr. Grace Holloway from the 1996 Doctor Who movie) to the event. See Happy Anniversary to Us… for further details.

We would like to something special for our 25th as well. It would be an event in the NY area, perhaps on Long Island as that is where it all began, yet still be accessible to our friends in NYC. Maybe a dinner event? Would you be interested in attending?

"There may be cracks in time and space involved. There are a lot of loose ends being tied up and things being explained and revelations…I think they're certainly two of our most ambitious episodes – they're certainly the most accomplished.

False Alarm – Smith Wasn’t Naked

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 05:04 AM PDT

It was many a fangirl's (or boy's) dream come true when Matt Smith finally gave us a look at the Doctor's naughty bits on last Saturday's episode, The Lodger.

Doctor Who - The LodgerExcept he didn't.

A report from Digital Spy announces Smith's response to accusations (or hopes) of his bearing all by means of a split-second towel drop in James Corden's flat:

"They give you these modesty trunks, they call them, or something. They are flesh-coloured trunks and I'm afraid I was wearing them. [Fans] definitely didn't see more. It goes out at 6.45 on a Saturday. It wouldn't be proper."

Disappointed? Maybe this will cheer you up – Smith has indicated that, should the need arise in a plot, he'd be perfectly willing to strip down to this – erm – swimgear in Doctor Who again.

"Oh, it's fine. I've done it before and I've just done it again afterwards. It's absolutely fine. It's always a bit odd because you've got sort of 40 people looking at you in your modesty shorts. But I think part of acting is about making yourself feel vulnerable and that certainly does it so, you know, maybe it's doing something right."

Who knows? Perhaps, if you're lucky, his clothes will fall through the crack when The Pandorica Opens tomorrow at 6:40PM on BBC1 and BBC HD! And then they'll never have existed in the first place! As long as the bow tie stays, so be it.

Smith: Vain or Fan?

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 02:49 AM PDT

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has told BBC Newsround that he enjoys watching himself as the Eleventh Doctor!

Doctor Who star Matt Smith Unsure as to whether this is narcissistic or now, Smith seemed generally unconcerned, effectively declaring himself a born again geek. He even tunes in to watch it live!

"Yes I do watch the show as it goes out. I'm a complete geek.

"Or just terribly vain. I've become a real fan. Am I allowed to say that? I mean, I'm in it."

There are of course shades of Tom Baker here – the actor, who in later years claimed that he never watched Doctor Who while he starred in it, famously dropped in on a family just before an episode aired in the mid-1970s so that he could see how it turned out.

Perhaps one lucky family will be similarly thrilled one day as Smith turns up on his way home from a personal appearance…?

Half a Million Daleks!

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 01:30 AM PDT

The BBC have revealed that City of the Daleks has so far been downloaded half a million times – making it the most popular Doctor Who game yet.

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games - City of the DaleksSpeaking to MCV, Simon Nelson, controller of portfolio and multiplatform at BBC Vision, declared:

"We've broken new ground for the TV and games industry"

"We had set ourselves some fairly stretched targets on this and we've blown them away.

The free game – available from the BBC's Official Doctor Who site for PC and Mac – features great graphics, streamlined gameplay and the voices of Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Nick Briggs.

"The credit goes to the Doctor Who and marketing teams, who are among the best in the BBC at creating integrated campaigns, messages and interactive spin-offs. This has been part of the Who planning process rather than just a bolt on at the end, which too many interactive things have been."

"Crucially, the industry and the audience have felt we have created something different here that works. That's probably more important than the numbers."

With a second (Cyberman) instalment due soon and a third after that, Doctor Who: The Adventure Games has certainly surpassed all expectations.

We hope that the powers-that-be don't however rest on their laurels and take this first real success in almost 30 years of Doctor Who games as a stepping stone to something bigger rather than repeatedly issuing variations on City of the Daleks using the same game engine over and over again…
