And so we face the final curtain… Posted: 25 Jun 2010 10:00 AM PDT Tonight’s the night! Over the last 3 months and 12 episodes of Series 5, for the Doctor, Amy Pond and River Song, all of the signs have been pointing to one specific date: Saturday 26th June 2010. Amy’s time. Check your calendars, folks, as that time is now! It’s hard to believe, but these last few hours are all [...]

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 09:00 AM PDT Steven Moffat (AKA The Boss of Doctor Who) has revealed that he did ask former Head Writer and Executive Producer Russell T Davies to write an episode for the 2010 series of Doctor Who. The Grand Moff said:
Davies made it very clear towards the end of his era that he was looking forward to new projects and also being able to watch a new series of Doctor Who for the first time in almost twenty years without knowing what was going to happen. However, he never said never, as Moffat pointed out:
We've got Russell's script for the fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures to look forward to entitled Death of the Doctor, which features not only the eleventh Doctor but also the return of 70's companion Jo Grant (who travelled with the Third Doctor just before Sarah Jane Smith turned up fact fans!) for the first time in over thirty years. He's barely been away from the Doctor Who world for a year and already Davies has signed up for a new series of Torchwood and worked on The Sarah Jane Adventures. Will Russell come back and write a Doctor Who script for the the new crew? You bet he will.

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 07:59 AM PDT This week brings a bit of anti-news from AntiMusic, unfortunately. The music news site has reported some misinformation as part of the buildup for tomorrow's North American premiere of Vincent and the Doctor. The article claims that the appearance of the song Chances by Athlete at the episode's emotional conclusion is the first rock song ever to appear on our beloved 47-year-old Doctor Who. Simply put, this is false. Rock music, in all its various sub-genres, has featured several times across multiple eras of the programme. This pattern began in 1965, when Ticket to Ride by the Beatles (who themselves appeared in the story) was featured in Season 2's The Chase. Since then, Fleetwood Mac's Oh Well – Part One (pictured here) accompanied the action of 1970's Spearhead From Space, Soft Cell's Tainted Love served as a traditional Earth song on Platform One in 2005's The End of the World, and The Master sang along to I Can't Decide by the Scissor Sisters in 2007's Last of the Time Lords. I won't say anything about Britney Spears' Toxic ballad on Platform One's "iPod," because that hardly counts as rock. At any rate, it's hard to tell where the falsified information stems from, but it's hard to blame AntiMusic, as Athlete themselves appear to believe the same story:
That being said, there's no arguing that Doctor Who very rarely uses music not created specifically for the show, so to be one of the few bands to break this sound barrier so to speak, especially when another set of that small number of musicians happens to be the Beatles, is indeed something for Athlete to be proud of. If you spawn from the vast empire of North America, you'll get to watch Vincent and the Doctor, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor, Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, and Tony Curran as Vincent Van Gogh, tomorrow evening at 9PM ET on BBC America or Space, depending on your nation of origin. Anything Else? Since music from popular culture in Doctor Who is such an unseen breed, this article has mentioned a hefty percentage of them already. But what songs have been given the award of landing in the programme that haven't been named by this article? Leave your comments below, and don't feel limited to rock music!

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 07:30 AM PDT Future Doctor Who writer and brilliant fantasy author Neil Gaiman has won the prestigious children's fiction prize – the Cilip Carnegie Medal – for his fantasy tale The Graveyard Book. The novel about a small boy brought up by ghosts achieved a literary double by also picking up the Newbury medal – the US equivalent of the Carnegie, reports the BBC. The author whose Doctor Who script is being filmed this summer as a possible third episode in season six, commented on the night:
Gaiman, who is best know for The Sandman, American Gods and Stardust, was inspired to write the novel after his son rode his tricycle into a graveyard. The book echoes the plot of The Jungle Book, the collection of short stories published in 1894 and written by Rudyard Kipling where a young boy Mowgli is brought up by animals. The book itself was turned into the famous Disney movie in 1967 (all together now: "Oh, oobee doo! I wanna be like yoooouu-hooo-hoo!") Gaiman beat off such renowned competition as Terry Pratchett for Nations and Peter Reeve for Fever Crumb to pick up the golden medal and £500 worth of books to donate to a library of his choice. Head over to the BBC website to see a short video of Gaiman talking about the golden age of children's literature and to see him catch both presenters out when he tells them he's writing for Doctor Who. Posted: 25 Jun 2010 06:45 AM PDT It turns out that Steven Moffat had always planned the Who finale and wasn't just making it up as he went along! Who knew!? Unlike his 'bumbly' Doctor, the Head Writer/Executive Producer – who had the unenviable task of rewriting the entire universe for this Saturday's The Big Bang – told Digital Spy that he always knew exactly how the series would turn out.
The Grand Moff also said even though the episode does wrap up the loose ends there is also lots that is 'brand new'. However what that might entail for Saturday's episode – he isn't saying…

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 06:04 AM PDT Work is due to commence on former Doctor Who star David Tennant's new film, Decoy Bride and anyone who is interested in becoming an extra in the movie has been asked to come forward! The film is at the early stages or production and apparently there is already a lot of buzz about it. Tennant will be featuring with Alice Eve from Sex and the City 2, and Trainspotting star Kelly Macdonald. The film is being hailed as "Four Weddings and a Funeral for the 21st century". The Ex-Isle film agency has put out a call to arms for any budding actors and three.fm, the website that reported the opportunity, commented:
A chance to star in a film that could be an icon for a generation and work with David Tennant? Is everyone still here? GET APPLYING!
