Posted: 24 Jun 2010 09:04 AM PDT Doctor Who Director Pennant Roberts has died at the age of 69. Pennant Roberts was well known as a director in British television working throughout the seventies and eighties on such classic programmes as The Onedin Line, Survivors, Angels, Blake's 7, Juliet Bravo, Tenko and Howards' Way. For Doctor Who he directed six stories. His first, in 1977, was the fourth Doctor story The Face of Evil, which saw the introduction of the character of Leela played by Louise Jameson. He returned later in the year to direct The Sun Makers , and then a year later he directed the Douglas Adams story, The Pirate Planet. He directed another Douglas Adams story, Shada, which was intended to end the seventeenth series of the programme, but which was cancelled due to industrial action at the BBC. Parts of the story were later used in twentieth anniversary story The Five Doctors. In 1984 he was given the task of bringing back The Silurians and The Sea Devils in the Fifth Doctor story, Warriors of the Deep, and in 1985 his final story for the series was the sixth Doctor story, Timelash. Louise Jameson worked with Roberts in both Doctor Who and Tenko. Speaking to Gallifrey Base and The Doctor Who News Page she paid this tribute. I have the sad duty of posting you the message that the wonderful Pennant Roberts died on Tuesday June 22nd at 6.30pm. The passing was very peaceful and dignified and his loving wife, Betsan, was at the hospice. He had been bravely fighting cancer for a year. He helped shape my life, not just on screen but off it too, and I feel the loss of him more acutely than I can express. However his absence will be felt by many, many more in many, many ways. He had the gift of being able to bring out the best in people, be that in a rehearsal room or around a dinner table. In his own words 'sorry to bow out early'. Rest in peace darling Pen.

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 06:27 AM PDT Blimey! Purchasing your very own Type 40 Time Lord vessel is quite an expensive endeavour these days. You may recall that last week we told you about Bonhams' Entertainment Memorabilia Auction, a sale taking place in London and featuring props, costumes, and more from all corners and time periods of the Doctor Who kingdom. Now we bring you the results: Christopher Eccleston's TARDIS traveled through a £10,800 vortex on its way to the highest bidder's doorstep! That's over £2000 more than the lowest estimate! The two 1960s Daleks – the Hartnell/Cushing shell that is the oldest one known to be around and the battle-scarred Evil of the Daleks model – sold for £4800 each. While these mutant exteriors were correctly estimated to go for about the same price, they both exceeded the high end of that predicted sale by £1800! Meanwhile, the Cyberman helmet from Moonbase and Tomb of the Cybermen exceeded Bonhams' calculations by an even greater margin; it's high bidder laid down almost £4000 more than the auctioneers had projected for a final sale of £7800! That's only £3000 less than the EcclesTARDIS, and is definitely too low a price for such an important part of Whoniverse history and what has the potential to be the crowning jewel of the coolest Halloween costume in the neighborhood! Other highlights include a full-size-replica TARDIS console from the 1970s stolen for £900 and an exhibition K-9 going for £1200. So, if you were looking for the parts to build your own TARDIS like the one above James Corden's flat in The Lodger, all you had to do was show up at the Bonhams auction with £12,900 in order to match the combined sales of Eccleston's spaceship, a control panel so you could fly it, and a tin dog to keep you company! For the price of an automobile, it is indeed possible to have the whole of time and space to travel to at one's discretion. Have a look at the full list of the Doctor Who items at Bonhams and their sale prices here. In the Start at Lot No box, type in 126 and hit Search.

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 05:31 AM PDT Doctor Who star Matt Smith has rebuked claims that his Doctor is sexy – calling the ancient time traveller 'bumbly'. Speaking to Bang Showbiz the actor spoke of his surprise at his character being labelled 'sexy'.
Not only is Matt Smith wise in the face of media hype about his characters sex appeal, he is also taking mature steps when dealing with the oncoming (media) storm. He also claims that people unsurprisingly have been treating him differently since he became the most popular character in SF (that's right and I'm including Alpha Centauri in that.)
Sexy or not, the Doctor can been seen in the final episode The Big Bang on Saturday at 18:05 on BBC 1 and BBC HD. (Via Digital Spy)

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 01:49 AM PDT I bet Patrick Troughton never had this problem. According to news agency par excellence the Daily Star Daisy Lowe, the 'super sexy model' girlfriend of Matt Smith has issued an ultimatum warning him not to sleep with Doctor groupies. Quoting a mysterious source, the paper reports;
It must be a gratifying life being a self appointed 'close friend'. You get to travel around with glamorous, sexy people, dine with them, go to the best parties but also you get to hear their intimate secrets, guide them at their lowest point, be R2D2 to their C3P0 and then like totally sell all that gossip for quarry loads of cash and keep your anonymity! Score! Well that's the fantasy, in reality you're probably a low life dragged from the bowels of the Z-list, spouting water cooler fantasies to the highest bidder that then get spun out across the web. That's if you exist at all. You might be the figment of a lazy journalists mind. An ego personified as the height of cool while the journalist sits in their office picking their ears with a biro. It probably has a name; something like A J Cool. Anyway, the "close friend" told the paper the couple have been on and off since April where they were seen canoodling at the Coachella Music Festival in California but recently split after Daisy "couldn't control her jealousy"…
The pair were recently hounded by photographers as they reunited on the Italian isle of Capri after the alleged ultimatum was issued.
The love Doctor can next be seen in The Big Bang on Saturday at 18:05 on BBC1 and BBC HD. The 'close friend' can next be seen going through Diana Vicker's bins. (Via Daily Star)

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 11:36 PM PDT Den of Geek has expressed concerns at the "here and there" timeslots that this years Doctor Who episodes have been given. Taking on board the fact that this is also a world cup year, the website has listed the varying times that the show has aired over the last twelve weeks: The Eleventh Hour: 6.25pm Looking at these, Den of Geek mention several points that spring to mind for them: -there's been no solid, dependable slot for the flagship show this year -because of this, the ratings have taken a dip -these up and down times aren't reflecting a flagship show. The author also commented:
Whilst these points are true enough, it doesn't necessarily result in a poorer response to the show but probably reassures the BBC that wherever they schedule the program, it's still one of the most watched programs on a Saturday night. During the last month or so, we've seen Doctor Who pull in strong ratings despite it being aired at around 6pm during some very, very sunny Saturdays. No other program could actually do that, just look at ITV's rating at the same time. Don't worry too much, Doctor Who isn't going anywhere for a while.
Steven Moffat on Big Bangs, arcs and Christmas Posted: 23 Jun 2010 11:13 PM PDT In preparation for The Big Bang, Steven Moffat has spoken to DigitalSpy about the anticipated series finale. You can read the full Q&A by clicking here, but don’t click the link if you’re avoiding spoilers. During the interview, the showrunner seemingly suggests that, in a break to the tradition, the title of this year’s Christmas special won’t be [...] |
