Veteran Costume Designer Returns Posted: 01 Jul 2010 06:43 AM PDT Velvet smoking jackets, scarf's that could conceivable cover an entire human body, crickety cricket wear; Barbara Kidd has taken the Doctor down some usual sartorial routes and now she's returning to the series for the Christmas special and the next series. Kidd worked on Doctor Who at the beginning of her career creating costumes for the 'Dandy Doctor' Jon Pertwee in Frontier in Space in 1973. She worked regularly throughout the seventies on The Green Death, Invasion of the Dinosaurs and The Monster of Peladon. She also designed costumes for the Fourth Doctor adventures The Ark in Space, The Sontaran Experiment, Genesis of the Daleks and Pyramids of Mars. Her final contribution was for the Peter Davison story Kinda. Kidd is a BAFTA Award winning designer for Charles Dickens adaptation The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby in 2002 and was nominated again in 2009 for another Dickens adaptation, Little Dorrit which featured a raft of past and present Doctor Who actors including Arthur Darvill, Eve Myles, Bill Paterson, Freema Agyeman and Russell Tovey. Recently she has been working on the Wallander the BBC's adaptation of the Swedish detective novel series by Henning Mankel which features Kenneth Branagh in the titular role. Doctor Who will also have a new producer for the 2010 Christmas Special in the shape of Sanne Wohlenberg. Wohlenberg also worked on Wallander (the first tabloid to produce the 'Kenneth Branagh to appear in Who' headline automatically wins the coveted Kasterborous 'Hack of the Week' award) as well as Murphy's Law and The Whistleblowers.

Eric Cantona to play ‘evil alien’ in Series 6? Posted: 01 Jul 2010 04:55 AM PDT The Series 6 rumour wheel has started spinning today with a report in The Daily Star which claims Eric Cantona will be appearing in Series 6 of Doctor Who. Posted: 01 Jul 2010 04:23 AM PDT It's not been a week since The Big Bang, and reports are already surfacing about the progress of and what is to be expected from Series 6 (or as we prefer here at Kasterborous, the traditional title of Season 32)! First, Digital Spy's recent interview with some guy who thinks he's in charge named Steven Moffat (who's that?) extracted the fact that a lot of the run is thought out but not written down yet:
One reason that there aren't enough scripts seems to be due to the fact that, as of last week, there aren't enough writers! Aside from Neil Gaiman and Moffat himself, we indeed haven't heard much about the masters behind the series' penning. When Digital Spy asked Moffat if all the writers had been confirmed, he replied,
But hey! At least there are plans! And some of them are plans that Moffat has already given clues to! Den of Geek transcribed this Moff quote from the most recent Doctor Who Confidential discussing what revelations are coming in 2011:
Most of us Whovians have been asking the "Who is River Song?" question since 2008. Three years later, it seems we'll finally get our answer! As for the silence – I've got a funny feeling the next series is going to be considerably quieter. |

Footballer Turned Actor? Unheard Of! Posted: 01 Jul 2010 12:20 AM PDT Oh dear. Have you ever had that feeling when you're reading a tabloid that you not only suspect one of its reports is inaccurate, you know for a fact that it is? Me neither. Can't say I spend much time reading that rubbish. Nonetheless, as of today I must admit that I'm no longer a virgin to the experience. Today, the Daily Star committed two of the worst sins known to man, aside from canceling Doctor Who. First, it reported an "exclusive" story, when, in fact, it wasn't. Second, the original story the tabloid stole from, appearing in the TV Times, provided mere speculation; the Daily Star reported as if it were set in stone. What am I on about? Last week, the TV Times reported that Matt Smith was interested in working with ex-footballer-turned-screen-actor Eric Cantona in a future episode of a particularly well-liked programme in this corner of the internet: As mentioned by Digital Spy, Smith said,
The Daily Star essentially took the exact same story, with no new information, and wrote this:
But wait, there's more! In reference to Smith's quote to the TV Times, the Daily Star continued,
No doubt there's some truth in the idea that Smith has the potential for significant sway in what the producers do with Who; he is playing the most important character on television after all, so if he weren't happy, it wouldn't be likely that anyone else would be either. But if the producers really are interested in signing on Eric Cantona, what does Cantona himself have to say about it? Has he even heard? Probably only if he's Googled himself today. Besides, when a tabloid quotes a person who is only referred to as a "BBC Insider," chances are high that they're talking to the studio custodian. Remember that salt that Meredith was telling you about this morning? Keep pinching it. |
Posted: 30 Jun 2010 11:09 PM PDT Big, bold and rather long, The Daleks' Masterplan heralded the first real over exposure of The Daleks. This 12-part epic stretched the affection the British public had for these little pepper pots to the limit and also seemed to repeat itself on a regular basis. Before the serial started properly it was preceded by a sort of teaser, Mission To The Unknown, a one part piece that served as a sort of introduction to the story and would affectionately become known as Dalek Cutaway. After the Myth Makers 4-part story The Daleks' Masterplanwas broadcast. When John Peel novelised The Daleks' Masterplan he split it into two books and took the title from this single episode and gave it to the first part. The Mutation Of Time, the second volume was named after the original title for the final episode which was called The Destruction Of Time. This review takes both releases into account as they cover one full story. Doctor Who – Daleks: Mission To The UnknownStranded in the jungles of Kembel, the most hostile planet in the Galaxy, Space Security agent Marc Cory has stumbled across the most deadly plot ever hatched – the Daleks are about to invade and destroy the Universe. Cory has to get a warning back to Earth before it's too late – but the Daleks find him first. Months later the Doctor and his companions arrive on Kembel and find Cory's message. But it may be too late for Earth – the Daleks' masterplan has already begun… Doctor Who – Daleks: The Mutation Of TimeThe Dalek's masterplan is well underway. With the Time Destroyer, the most deadly machine ever devised, they will conquer the Universe. Only one person stands in their way – the Doctor. For he has stolen the precious Taranium core which is vital to activate the machine. Travelling through time and space, the Doctor and his companions are forever on the move in case the Daleks track them down. But after several months, to their horror, the TARDIS indicates that they are being followed… Dramatic and bold this is a serious release that grabs listeners by the ears and doesn't let go. Of the two main narrators Purves in particular stands out delivering each line with such effort you can almost hear the drops of sweat that must have built up on his brow. His take on the Doctor is fun and captures the more alien traits the character possessed. Marsh does her best to keep the urgency up but sometimes her voice is slightly muted by the enthusiastic score. John Peel's book leaps into your ears and truly comes alive on these audiobooks making it a more enjoyable experience than reading the original paperback. The addition of Nicholas Briggs as "Voice of the Daleks" helps bridge the two eras of the show together and he is his usual reliable self. What a great job he has, hasn't he? This is not for casual fans though as the over use of the Daleks throughout the story may become slightly tiresome for them. These two releases add to the original plot but are best listened to in two in separate sittings unless of course you're on holiday. Perfect listening whilst lazing beside a pool! As usual there are clips from David Howe's exceptional On Target book letting us in on the background to the story and the production of the original book. Obviously if you buy one you must buy the other and for once this isn't a bad thing. A classic in every sense of the word, just a tad long! Ordering this story: Doctor Who – Daleks: Mission To The Unknown is available from BBC Audiobooks. Written by John Peel, it is read by Peter Purves and Jean Marsh, with Dalek voices By Nicholas Briggs. The ISBN is 9781408409985 and the RRP is £12.99. You can get a good value purchase of just just £7.78 from Amazon Doctor Who – Daleks: The Mutation Of Time is also from BBC Audiobooks and written by John Peel. Peter Purves and Jean Marsh continue their reading, accompanied by Nicholas Briggs performing Dalek voices. The RRP is £12.99 and the ISBN 9781408409992 – purchase this from Amazon for just £7.99 |
Posted: 30 Jun 2010 08:56 PM PDT The Grand Moff has dismissed the low overnight ratings of the recent series of Doctor Who as unimportant. Moffat made the comments in a video posted on YouTube by his son Joshua (posting as 'armytedd') who filmed his family as they prepared to watch last Saturdays finale The Big Bang. The overnight ratings for this fantastic episode suggest that it had underperformed but when collated with the timeshift data, the show has been higher than before. Moffat believes the way people are watching television is changing;
As a viewer Moffat added that he prefers to watch each episode as it airs and 'gets very grumpy' when he's interrupted (who doesn't?) See Moffat grilled by his own mini Paxman. |
Johnny Depp Doctor Who Movie?! Posted: 30 Jun 2010 07:00 PM PDT It begins again. In a repeat of the early nineties when tabloids made huge claims that a Doctor Who movie was being made (helmed by Stephen Spielberg with the TARDIS now talking – New York rap style – as Doctor Who Magazine once joked) the latest rumour has hit the street that Johnny Depp is to play the "big screen" version of the Doctor in a script written by Russell T Davies. Note that this whole story is at this stage nothing more unconfirmed rumour. The post that "revealed" this information has actually been taken down now (surprise surprise) but it hints at a 2012 release date. Russell T Davies is quoted as saying:
Now any rational person will take this with a pinch of salt. Any Doctor Who fan will realise that the quoted statement above sounds nothing like Davies and why would he try and rival a series that he loves and respects? In my honest opinion, this article seems like a rumour that got out of control. Ask yourself this, why would Russell T Davies spend years making Doctor Who amazing for television viewers to enjoy on a Saturday night and then try and take it to the cinema? You can read the broader article at i09.com or read the slightly more rational report (which includes the words "pinch" and "salt") at TVOvermind.com. |

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 05:40 PM PDT And the bets are off! Betnose.com have reported a cut in the bet amount in relation to Matt Smith being replaced as the Doctor after reported disappointing viewing figures for his series of Doctor Who. Betting office William Hill now have (The Next Doctor actor) David Morrissey as their favourite with (The Lodger guest star) James Corden following closely behind. The website quoted:
It also added that the betting cost of Matt Smith playing the Doctor in the 2011 series of Doctor Who had been reduced, meaning that they think he will be replaced, before going on to list betting rates on other possible actors to replace him in the role. The fact that Matt is preparing to film his new scenes for the next years worth of Doctor Who goodness should tip them off a little but apparently doesn't. And if David Morrissey is the favourite, then the betting shops are obviously looking to drain some cheap cash out of their punters… |

Dracula Returns for Textbook Stuff Posted: 28 Jun 2010 10:41 PM PDT Big Finish is delighted to announce the release of Bram Stoker - Dracula's Guest and Other Dark Tales read by the velvet-voiced Peter Guinness and produced by our sister site, Textbook Stuff. This classic short story was the only other piece of Dracula-related fiction Bram Stoker ever wrote and, so his widow claimed, may even have been the very first chapter of Dracula itself. It concerns an unnamed young Englishman (Jonathan Harker, perhaps) who finds himself in a deserted graveyard and unwisely decides to seek shelter in a tomb. This unabridged 'weird tale', as Stoker termed it, is accompanied by two other complete stories from the master of horror: The Judge's House (in which a student's desire for peace and quiet takes a turn for the worse when he lodges in a haunted house) and A Gipsy Prophecy (in which a fortune teller predicts doom for a happily married couple). All three titles are read by Peter Guinness, familiar to Big Finish listeners from his appearances in The Holy Terror, The Phantom of the Opera and The Beast of Orlok. Our friends at Textbook Stuff are also including three special suites of Howard Carter's beautiful music for this release. Bram Stoker - Dracula's Guest and Other Dark Tales is only available on download and can be purchased on its own here or as part of a Horror subscription, which includes supernatural tales by Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe and M.R. James. Follow the links for Textbook Stuff releases, including their Poetry range. If you want to know more about what makes Textbook Stuff titles different from ordinary audiobooks, why not listen to our special podcast here, where Nick Briggs chats to Barnaby Edwards about the project. Also available to download right now in the Horror range is Charles Dickens - The Signalman and Other Ghostly Tales. |
