Grand Cowardice

Posted: 02 Jul 2010 02:59 AM PDT

Doctor Who executive producer Steven Moffat has revealed that his dark creations are the product of his own cowardice.

The Weeping Angels, Vashda Nerada and cracks are all down to his own unreasonable fears of the mundane!

Doctor Who boss Steven MoffatAs you might know, Steven Moffat was interviewed by his son Joshua recently in a video uploaded to YouTube. The 5 minute video features plenty to talk about, including Moffat's own thoughts on his public perception – including the idea that he spends his time looking for things to "turn scary".

"People say that about me, that I just go around looking for things to make frightening," Moffat said. "But I think it's actually that I'm just a very, very big coward and I look at things and I'm genuinely frightened of them.

"I've always been frightened of statues and shop dummies. Pretty much anything can frighten me, which is why I don't watch scary movies like The Exorcist."

Moffat's honesty is refreshing – in fact if you watch the clip, you find a very personable and engaging chap, quite unlike the dour, dry Scot of his public appearances…

Let’s Back Matt!

Posted: 02 Jul 2010 02:00 AM PDT

Finally, some sense has been spoken over this whole "drop in ratings" debacle. Digital Spy have reported that Doctor Who fans have begun to show their support for Matt Smith and have spoken out about what actually caused the slight (that last word is very important) drop in ratings for some of the episodes this year.

Doctor Who stars Matt SmithPeter Bell, a Doctor Who, fan commented:

"I'm happy to admit I was wrong. He was good at first and he just got better and better as the series progressed – better even I think than [David] Tennant… We had great weather on Saturday and most people don't want to spend summer sat indoors watching the TV."

Matt Hills, a doctor at Cardiff University (who has also written several books on Doctor Who), also commented on the ratings:

"These ratings figures need to be viewed in the context of a developing shift towards on-demand viewing." he explained. "Audiences know they can catch up with Doctor Who via services such as iPlayer, as well as through BBC Three repeats."

This is a clearer picture of what has actually been going on with the series over the past thirteen weeks. The ratings were high when the weather was cold and they were low when it was sunny. Rather than a reflection on Doctor Who or a lack of interest in the new series this is just circumstance. The clear ratings winner this year was the FIFA World Cup because more people like football than Doctor Who (apparently..) and it was not only watched in homes but in pubs as well. Now if only someone would make a Doctor Who pub….

Frank IS Spider-Man

Posted: 02 Jul 2010 12:00 AM PDT

Think back to 2007, when you watched Daleks in Manhattan and Evolution of the Daleks for the first time. Remember that one guy? With the funny accent? Specifically, the Tennessean funny accent? His name was Frank?

Frank is Spider-Man - former Doctor Who guest cast member is new webslingerFrank is now Spider-Man.

Well, his name isn't really Frank; the actor tends to prefer being called Andrew Garfield.

In case you who haven't been following, or can't remember, Spider-Man 4 was originally supposed to star the usual guy, Tobey Maguire, until he backed out and Sony Pictures decided to restart the film franchise altogether.

Garfield is the fruit of the reboot. Sony says,

"Today's confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory.

"Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker.

"Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role."

"Most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory?" If the whole David-Tennant's-leaving-so-who's-going-to-fill-his-shoes-hey-look-it's-Matt-Smith-wait-who's-he? experience we Whovians have had over the last couple years hadn't happened, we might have agreed.

As a side dish, who should the first foe of this "new series" of Spider-Man be? My money's on the Empress of the Racnoss.
