Drug Doctor

Posted: 03 Jul 2010 05:37 AM PDT

Christopher Eccleston is due to be back on the small screen again with his latest role – playing a drug dealer.

Former Doctor Who Christopher EcclestonFilming of the new BBC 2 drama The Shadow Line begins this month in the Isle of Man where Chris will play a character who goes for one last make-or-break-deal.

The six part series will be shown next year and will revolve around the of the death of underworld figure Jay Wratten (Rafe Spall) and how this effects the lives of those left behind. According to the article it's a story of interlocking lives, so could we be expecting a Pulp Fiction kind of tale? The BBC commented:

"The Shadow Line explores the morality of these characters as they negotiate the repercussions of Wratten's death, and attempt to navigate the fine line between right and wrong."

Also starring alongside Eccleston are names such as Chiwetel Ejiofor Sir Antony Sher, Stephen Rea and Lesley Sharp.

Ben Stephenson, BBC controller for drama commissioning, remarked:

"Chiwetel and Chris are two of our finest actors and we couldn't be more excited to have them, and the rest of the amazing cast, on board for this original and epic six-hour series."

This isn't the first time that Christopher Eccleston has played a shady character, in 2002 he played a nasty piece of work in Gone in Sixty Seconds alongside Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie, while more recently he played the arms dealer James McCullen/Destro in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

The new role comes only weeks after Eccleston portrayed John Lennon in a BBC Four film.

Steven Moffat Is Just Like Us

Posted: 03 Jul 2010 04:40 AM PDT

If you've been following Kasterborous this week, then you may know by now of the YouTube interview that Steven Moffat submitted to with his son (armytedd), after the premiere transmission of The Big Bang saw its credits roll.

Doctor Who boss Steven MoffatIt's probably the best Moffat interview anywhere from the past few months. Unfortunately, this praise will never reach the Who head's eyes or ears, because he indicated in the interview that he's been fasting from Whovian forum and news site access:

"I am very strict that I do not do it now. I don't go on the forums, I don't know what they're thinking.

"It's not because they're stupid, and not because I wouldn't agree with them. But because that's not the voice of the audience. That's the voice of a very atypical, tiny sliver of the audience and I need to keep the show appealing to a mainstream audience, not to people who are, let's be honest, a bit like me – obsessed Doctor Who fans."

Well, folks… for those of you who've been hoping the Grand Moff hears all of your suggestions for improving the already-perfect show in the Kasterborous forums, you're probably disappointed (but by all means, keep posting them!). At least we can take comfort in knowing that Moffat sees himself as being just like us! Which fuels hope for any of us who might aspire to be in the head writer's chair some day. I can dream, right?

For another fantastic father-son interview with the Moffs, have a look at this delightful one from just before the Matt Smith era began.

Doctor Who news and rumours roundup

Posted: 03 Jul 2010 03:51 AM PDT

It's a week today since Series 5 (or Series 1 or Series 31, depending on which counting system you subscribe to) ended in the UK, yet it seems only yesterday that we were all eagerly anticipating Matt Smith and Steven Moffat's first season of Doctor Who.

Viewers in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere still have the anticipation of what's to come (assuming you haven't seen the episodes over the Internet already and, assuming you haven't spoilered yourself with the deluge of articles appearing everywhere!).

And a lot's happened in the seven days since the end of The Big Bang in the UK, when we found out that the crack in time ... oops, spoilers!

But - be warned! - a hefty dose of salt may be needed before reading some of what follows ...

Matt joined Orbital on stage at Glastonbury for "Dr Who", their rendition of the show's theme tune. Meanwhile, he had to put up with a lot of nonsense from the British tabloid press concerning so-called "falling ratings" - which doesn't actually appear to stand up to much scrutiny - and William Hill slashing the odds on him remaining on the show.

Then, apparently, Moffat's script for the 2010 Christmas Special went missing and several of the writer's for next year were announced (see Digital Spy).

On a positive note, as we reported on Wednesday, Barbara Kidd, who previously worked on Who episodes involving Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davison, is returning to the show for the 2011 series.

The monster line up for the Doctor Who Live tour details were confirmed and Neil Gaiman Tweeted that he'd completed his Who script.

And, then there are the "facts" that Matt wants both Eric Cantona and Ian McKellen to appear in the show as baddies! See this article for more details.

Last, but not least, is the revelation that Johnny Depp has "definitely" signed up to play the Doctor in a big-budget Hollywood movie, written by Russell T Davies and featuring the Daleks and the Ebola virus!

There are masses of stories relating to this rumour, but this one on Digital Journal at least takes a more sober and detailed look, including on the history of Doctor Who movies, proposed and actual.

Happy times and places!

Now, About Those Rumours…

Posted: 02 Jul 2010 09:56 PM PDT

Well if you can't trust unconfirmed, speculative internet rumours what can you trust?

In a cataclysmic shock, it turns out that Johnny Depp won't be piloting the TARDIS in a Doctor Who movie.

io9 have spoken to the BBC who have said there are 'no plans' to bring the Doctor to the big screen and that any rumours about such an idea are 'pure speculation.'

Former Doctor Who boss Russell T DaviesFormer show runner Russell T. Davies, the man supposedly going behind the backs of people he has worked with on Who to produce this movie, has also spoken out to SFX confirming its all gubbins:

"Someone sits in New Zealand", he wearily told us (except with a few more expletives), "Types out a rumour, and I spend the next three days dealing with that rumour!"

A muted and illiterate "fake Davies" was quoted in a long since deleted article from Pubarticles, saying:

"There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television programme. But none of us working the film will forget what makes the character great and interesting and the long-time fans will not be disappointed because yes, the Daleks make an appearance."

Not only is it disrespectful to Russell T. Davies but it's a slap in the face to anyone who put their heart and soul into bringing the past seasons of Doctor Who to our screens.

The rumour with its uninspired choice of the 'quirky' Depp, is so lacking in imagination its not too difficult to believe a desperate studio would turn to him.

So the net result of this insane rumour is that one unimaginative person, imitating another causes a thousand news agencies to go ape, lose all common sense (who would announce a movie rumour on a website whose top articles include "Better and Effective Ways to Grow Taller" and "The History of Hello Kitty"!?) and report any old rubbish just so they don't appear to be out of the loop/noose.

Sigh… if there are any poor souls out there still clinging to this rumour or any other Who Movie speculation; please, seek help- go to the iPlayer and watch hour after glorious hour of genuine, lovingly crafted Doctor Who and, for God sake, don't go near the internet, you'll hurt yourself.
