Posted: 12 Jul 2010 08:52 AM PDT Doctor Who's Matt Smith in hot man on man action! Sorry, came over all Daily Star there. Now, where was I? Ah yes, Matt Smith will soon be seen locking lips with his male co-stars in a heartfelt look at the life of author Christopher Isherwood, in the BBC's Christopher and his Kind. As reported previously, the film tells the story of Isherwood's (Smith) escape from repressive English society and his suffocating relationship with his mother, Kathleen, played by Adelaide Brooke herself Lindsay Duncan (The Waters of Mars, of course, and Criminal Justice, Thatcher) for the decadent – and politically unstable – world of 1930s Berlin. Invited into this hedonistic cabaret by his friend W. H Auden, played by Pip Carter (Party Animals) Isherwood becomes intoxicated by the thriving gay subculture, starting a passionate love affair with a street cleaner called Heinz, played by Douglas Booth (Worried about the Boy) It's only when this affair ends that Isherwood begins a journey of self discovery. The drama is based on the 1970's memoirs by Isherwood of the same name. Isherwood drew inspiration from his time in Berlin to craft Goodbye to Berlin, the first novel to feature the character Sally Bowles, who then appeared in the adaptation for the stage I Am a Camera which itself was adapted in the musical Cabaret, for which Liza Minnelli won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Sally. Also during this time Isherwood met Gerald Hamilton, a peculiar man who became the inspiration for Isherwood's novel Mr Norris Changes Trains. Hamilton is played by the Dream Lord himself Toby Jones (Amy's Choice, and Frost/Nixon) Matt and Lindsay Duncan had previously worked together on stage in Polly Stenham's That Face about a dysfunctional middle-class family hitting the skids. Christopher and his Kind is a one off ninety minute drama written by acclaimed playwright Kevin Elyot (Clapham Junction) and is due to air in the Winter.

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 01:19 AM PDT You were expecting someone else? Okay, Colin Baker didn't actually draw anything for the Art for Hearts auction, but he did sign a caricature of himself, rendering this second week of the charity sales event a particularly exciting one! The piece, crafted by auction organiser Ian Stacey, is painted on A4 paper using watercolour and ink, and is made complete with an autograph from the Doctor who spent much of his incarnation in court! You can place a bid for it on eBay (and please do; at the time of this writing, the highest bid was only £0.99, even though it's worth loads more!), but make sure you do so before the end of the week or you've missed your chance! If you haven't been following Kasterborous lately, you may be interested to know that the Art for Hearts auction is an eBay sale of Doctor Who-themed artwork, with a different piece sold every week, and that its proceeds will go towards the research of organ transplants. For more information about the cause, read the Kasterborous introduction or the Art for Hearts blog. The kick-off creation at this year's event was an original commission from acclaimed Doctor Who artist Pete Wallbank (interviewed in 2005), and its winning bid was a delightful £142.00!

Posted: 11 Jul 2010 10:08 PM PDT Michael Gambon and Katherine Jenkins to appear in this year's Doctor Who Christmas special.
Posted: 11 Jul 2010 10:00 PM PDT The BBC have confirmed that production starts today (Monday 12 July) on the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas Special in which the thrilling adventures of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and newlyweds Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) will continue in a fun-filled and heartfelt festive story The title "Father Who?" has been bandied about – all we know so far is that according to Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning:
Meanwhile, arriving on set for her first day of filming, the beautiful Welsh singer-turned-actress Katherine Jenkins said:
With Michael Gambon also cast, we're hoping Doctor Who will return on Christmas Day itself. Of course, it's too early to say at this stage, especially with the recent scheduling shenanigans that in many ways defined the 2010 series…
Filming Starts On Dr Who Christmas Special - Rapid Talent Posted: 11 Jul 2010 09:43 PM PDT
| ||
Posted: 11 Jul 2010 07:05 PM PDT Shooting on the Christmas Doctor Who commences shortly – with a couple of star names attached already, reports MediaGuardian. In what amounts to fantasy casting for the editor of this blog, singer Katherine Jenkins – whose limited acting experience stretches to playing herself in an episode of Emmerdale – will be a star attraction in the Christmas special. Says Steven Moffat:
And to balance up the appearance of the Welsh songbird, Michael Gambon – the second Dumbledore actor in the Harry Potter movies – is also appearing in the Christmas Doctor Who! of this great piece of casting, Steven Moffat says: "Michael Gambon is as distinguished an actor as I can imagine and the fact that he was Dumbledore means that he is already know to millions of children." They will of course be appearing alongside Matt Smith and Karen Gillan as the Doctor and Amy – and hopefully Arthur Darvill as Rory! (With thanks to Robert)

Posted: 11 Jul 2010 07:21 AM PDT Its always exciting when two seemingly distant satellites of pop culture momentarily share the same orbit- making Geekdom feel that little bit more connected. Fans are usually the engine behind this; fan fiction where Optimus Prime unites with M.A.S.K, homemade trailers cobbled together from existing footage promising the forth-coming release of Teen Wolf 3 and multi-platform artwork, sending our heroes into new and, mostly, strange worlds. Springfield Punx, a blogspot site dedicated to drawing everything Simpsons-style has just concluded its Doctor Who week, with a series of daily pictures that crash all of Series 5's stars directly into Matt Groening's universe. The Doctor, Amy, Rory (my personal favourite) the Daleks, the Weeping Angels and the TARDIS all get a Homer-rific makeover. Dean, the site's artist and founder, lives in Canada (though he clearly hasn't been watching at American speed) comments that:
This isn't the first time The Simpsons and the Doctor have crossed paths: the Fourth Doctor made cameo appearances in the episodes "Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming" (as one of the "esteemed representatives of television"), "Mayored to the Mob" (at a science fiction convention), and "Treehouse of Horror X" (in which he is kidnapped by the Comic Book Guy.) Tables resembling the TARDIS console appear briefly in "The Homer They Fall" and in "Bart the Fink" Comic Book Guy is seen wheeling a wheelbarrow full of tacos and saying:
In the opening credits of "Treehouse of Horrors XX", Consulting Producer Don Payne, uses the Halloween tradition of spooky names to reference the famous warning from the Ood to the Tenth Doctor that "He Will Knock 4 Times." And likewise there have been a few sneaky references to everyone's favourite yellow family in Who. For instance, there's Planet of the Ood in which an Ood with a "comedy classic option" setting on his translator ball says, "D'oh!", while in The End of Time, the Doctor, after being yanked down a flight of stairs will strapped to a chair says "Worst. Rescue. Ever!" in reference to Comic Book Guy's famous catchphrase ("Worst. Episode. Ever!").
Posted: 11 Jul 2010 05:08 AM PDT If you're in the Portsmouth area, you may be interested in the new Alien Invasion exhibition at the Portsmouth City Museum. And even though everyone's favourite tin dog is more robot and less alien, you'll find there an original K-9 prop from the 1970s sitting proudly on display! The internationally-acclaimed artificial companion of the Doctor is featured next to a small-scale version of the even more world-famous TARDIS! In addition to these two Whovian artifacts, 58 other models and costumes representing nearly every corner of the realm of sci-fi pop up, including Red Dwarf, Alien, Predator, Lost in Space, and a hurricane of Star Wars items, such as an Ewok, Darth Vader, and the Dalek-wannabe R2-D2. Portsmouth-based media entity The News cites Dr. Lincoln Geraghty, speaking at the exhibition's opening on 26 June, as saying,
Of course, if the Portsmouth City Museum is looking for "a range of props and costumes," why don't they just showcase an all-Doctor-Who exhibit? If you'd like to see the Alien Invasion for yourself, drive over to Museum Road, which is near Portsmouth Grammar School, anytime between 10AM and 5PM until January 2011.
Posted: 11 Jul 2010 03:03 AM PDT Well, not quite – but then the Doctor Who star wasn't all that naked in The Lodger, either, was he? As you can see from the accompanying image, Matt Smith appeared on stage with Lindsay Duncan in That Face wearing naught but a towel a couple of years ago, something that should prove interesting to Doctor Who fans; Duncan of course appeared as Adelaide Brook in The Waters of Mars in 2009. While the fuss over that seen in The Lodger might have died down here in the UK one month on, it seems that some BBC America viewers are beside themselves in wondering if Doctor Who star Matt Smith was indeed as naked as the day he was born under that towel. We've been reliably informed that he wasn't…

In the premiere issue, it features a review of The Eleventh Hour, an article about the infamous 'PBS hijacking incident', Invasion Convention review, 'Cracks', an original 11th Doctor story, 'The Doctor in Wonderland', "It Could Have Been a Spin-off", a column by actor Harry Sedgewick, and what else?
